About JAMES ST.
James St. is the coming together of two of Belfast’s best restaurants, James Street South Restaurant and The Bar and Grill at James St.The new offering is the best of the Bar and Grill's menu with a few light touches to the fine cooking of James Street South.
Classic dishes are firmly established on the menu from the crab and chilli linguine, Dundrum crab used on toast, alongside classic bistro dishes such as farmhouse terrine, fruit de mer plates available from Thursday. The charcoal grill still plays centre stage, cooking not just some of the best steaks and prime cuts Northern Ireland has to offer but also fresh whole fish, pork and vegetables.
With a larger, more established bar area, a large range of wines are available alongside a considered spirit list and an extensive whisky offering. Locally produced beer, cider and gins take pride of place on the drinks menu.
Owned by Niall McKenna since 2003 the revamped James St. will offer locals and tourists a great dining experience in a Belfast city centre.
The restaurant team is headed up by Paul McGovern as Restaurant Manager and Monteiro Agostinho as Head Chef.
We are located minutes walk away from the Europa Hotel, The Crown Bar and the City Hall.
Great steaks and loved the new layout
Much prefer the James st south as it was before. Tables too close. V busy and service not great. Food ok but not the standard I would expect from James St-sorry
Hi, I was here on Saturday 8th December and had an absolutelying lovely experience service and food were first class. On Wednesday the 12th I went again with my sister and a complete opposite experience we waited a long time to be served although the restaurant was nowhere near as busy my burger when it came was very overdone so therefore not enjoyable at all. I had intended to go back for my birthday in January but will be rethinking that as I was so disappointed.
Really enjoyed our meals, lovely menu to choose from. Great very attentive staff.
The food was great, and staff extremely courteous and friendly.
Lighting perhaps a bit bright where we were seated and large group next to us meant it was noisy but it is the xmas period so we would expect that. Overall a fabulous dining experience with first rate service.
Thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas visit to James St. We were a group of 8 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food, wine and cocktails. Big shout out to Claire. She was fab. What an asset!
excellent food and value for money, Toffee Fudge Sundae was nice finish to a great Christmas lunch
Lovely restaurant, nice wine, good food and stand out moment was the death by chocolate cocktail.
Food was absolutely delicious, however, the restaurant was rather loud and the service was quite slow at the start.
Excellent food and service. Paul is very welcoming.
Food was lovely from start to finish we got the three course Christmas menu. Best meal I've had to date out will definitely be back.
We had a very special lunch to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday. The complementary glass of pink champagne on arrival was unexpected and very much appreciated. Food and service was all really excellent. Thank you for looking after us so well.
Here for Christmas dinner, in a room upstairs on our own with no music, crackers or anything really to indicate it was Christmas. Asked to arrive for 8pm, party of 16 arrived and seated by 8.25, had to ask for drink orders to be taken. Dinner order not taken until after 9.15 and we weren't finishing our starter until 10.15pm, to be eating a turkey and ham dinner at 11.15pm is far too late. Had to ask for music and were given a bluetooth speaker to use, bottles of wine kept to the side and again had to ask for top ups . All in all the food was nice but far too long in-between courses, wait staff could have been more attentive
Beautiful food and excellent service! Visited on Sunday evening for a Birthday dinner, atmosphere was relaxed and the chareaubriand we had was stunning. Staff were extremely attentive and really looked after us. Can’t wait to return! Thank you.
Lovely welcome and atmosphere in the restaurant. However, our experience was disappointing. Food was very poor. Five of our party ordered steaks. All five arrived either over cooked or slightly under. Due to time pressure we elected not to send the items back. Service was very slow - our desserts for example were served without cutlery. We requested cutlery from the waitress - however it did not arrive. A member of our party ended up waiting by the service hatch to acquire the necessary cutlery for the table. This was unexpected in a restaurant with the reputation of James St South. Sadly a disappointing experience.
Excellent lunch. Very busy, and staff kept smiling - mostly! Small thing, but might be helpful if (casually dressed) staff had, say, an apron on. I ordered a bottle of wine on several occasions from rather surprised fellow diners!
My family are great fans of all of the JSS restaurants. Great food, atmosphere and staff. Over all the years we have never been disappointed. Please may it continue
Hello Thank you very much for a great night and a great meal on Saturday. We had a late booking and although we waited for a while on the table it was not a problem at all. We had a few drinks at the bar and your staff couldn't have been more pleasant or accommodating in the circumstances. They made sure our starters were provided free and throughout the night were very attentive. We look forward to returning again. Thank you
Great evening, food was great with lots of options for gluten free also. Lovely staff
Superb from start to finish. One of the best in Belfast
My wife and I went for lunch on Saturday. The food was excellent and the service first class! The staff could not have been kinder or more attentive without being intrusive! We will definitely be back, Thank you!
Guys, sorry this review not great and a pity as I have been several times before and always good. So issues were : table not ready until nearly 9:50 and even then it was two tables for two pushed together in bar area, hostess went off to see if table free in old main restaurant and didn't come back, servers young and inexperienced so had no clue which plate went to which diner. So bit the type of experience I would expect when dining at james st south. Hope it is better this Thursday when I am back with work colleagues. Regards David
The welcome on arrival was not friendly. No offer to take wet coats or an umbrella. Although I booked some weeks ago we were given the table nearest the door however when I asked we were given a better table. Waiting service was good and friendly. We had no problem with the service charge. We paid in cash with the intention of leaving the balance of £6 as an additional tip.I was disappointed that the waitress asked us if we would like our change. In principle I said Yes but of course then left it.
The addition of round tables would would greatly improve the atmosphere of the dinning experience as guests would be able to talk to each other more freely rather than shouting down the length of the table. A couple more of draught ales wouldnt go amiss, just to gie the dinner more choice. This is my third time here in as many months and i think the staff and food are top quality. Would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys fine dinning at a reasonable price.
