About The Astor Grill at Cliveden House
Located in the charming old stable block, which once housed Lord Astor’s most prized fillies. Adopting an equestrian theme in its decor, The Astor Grill is full of character offering a simple and informal approach to dining at Cliveden.
The all-day menu is overseen by Executive Chef André Garrett and it focusses on a mixture of classic American and British dishes, many reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents. The name – The Astor Grill – recalls the Astor family, who owned the house from the early 1900s. William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest citizen, then gave the house to his son and daughter in-law, Nancy Astor, in 1906, and Cliveden became a vibrant social hub for guests as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and Winston Churchill.
The Astor Grill today is a cosmopolitan venue which is steeped in history, its romantic setting offers all the style and legendary hospitality that Cliveden is famous for, and it is the perfect place to escape and enjoy an early lunch or a relaxed supper.
Cliveden House and the grounds are sensational and the Astor Grill is amazing. However the portions are small, as a main I had crab fettuccine and the size was really a starter. We ordered a latte and 2 desserts, the latte arrived, never saw the desserts and when the staff were queried they said there was a problem in the kitchen - why did they not tell us sooner. It is pricey! and I went home and had a sandwich!!
Beautiful venue with delicious food.
A perfect lunch, served by the best staff, in superb surroundings
WOW! The best service ever and really great food ! We both loved the Smokehouse menu ... good value too! We had a really lovely booth ... such a wonderful evening! Thank you so much!
We had a wonderful meal - the food was delicious and the decor is wonderful. The staff and level of service was outstanding!
Wonderful meal, great service, beautiful restaurant. They catered for my gluten and dairy intolerance perfectly. Highly recommended.
Lovely unique and cosy atmosphere and friendly staff.
Took our dogs with us, the staff were amazing with them. Gave them treats and water, something we have never experienced in any restaurant. Amazing food, very welcoming environment.
A great place to enjoy a less formal meal; highly recommend the lamb burger! It was lovely to see that the restaurants theme was designed around many of the building’s original features. Sebastian from the restaurant spent a great deal of time telling us all about the history of Cliveden and took us on a fabulous tour of the house - a most enjoyable experience, one that we will never forget and a great way to end our stay at Cliveden.
Great service, good food and lovely restaurant. We will definitely be back! Very good vegetarian menu!
Perfect location for a quiet and relaxing Sunday lunch
The maitre d was very welcoming to us and our dog. He understands and exemplifies good service.
... the background music was a good idea; and it wasn't overwhelming any conversation.
Exceptionally disappointing experience at the Astor Grill. I have visited the Grill 4 times over the years and this is the worst experience of all. As part of Cliveden House stately home (part of the Relais Château Group of Hotels) this is way way below par. The atmosphere was like eating at a cheap faux country/barn environment (the irony as I am sure the old stables have been there years). The lighting could not be adjusted to be intimate at all. The music was almost techno house music. We requested to change to something more appropriate for a sunday evening dinner and was told it was a random playlist (?! I have to go back to my original comment that as part of one of the most prestigious country estates why something so important as ambience, setting, lighting and music isn’t tailored to exactly what this house and its guests would expect). The manager was able to change the music to some more mellow jazz I need to add. I ate my steak as I was hungry but it was dry and tough. A steak at Cliveden should be super! and something you return for and even reminisce over! We ordered sides and the waiter came with an extra portion of spinach and offered it to us saying ‘I think the chef was trying to get ahead as we have some guests arriving soon so would you like this’. When offered still or sparkling water, and when we said Tap was fine, the waiter apologises and said he was told to up-sell. On top of this we ordered 2 glasses of wine and later found out we were wrongly charged on our bill and that the order and menu price did not match. The restaurant is overpriced for the quality of food. I am happy to pay if it’s backed up and there are no faults. But you simply cannot charge for something that has so many flaws in. My experience at the Astor Grill will make it very hard for me to have good reason to return to Cliveden House. If you don’t wish to eat in the main dining room and want something more casual I’m afraid this isn’t up to scratch. I also found it bizarre to receive this feedback email only a few hours after visiting (think it came through at midnight the night I visited). As a guest at the hotel it irritated me that I would receive this email whilst I was still (trying) to enjoy my stay. The whole point of staying at cliveden is to relax, unwind, indulge and escape.
The coffee was lovely, but at £6 a cup, I would have expected at least a biscuit with it..... a And the service was efficient but not especially friendly.
Nothing wrong with the food we just expected better at Cliveden and particularly at the expensive price. Disappointed overall.
The food was fantastic. Service was on point. There could do with some music in there. When there’s minimal bookings it really highlights that
We so enjoyed our recent stay at Cliveden and the Astor Grill offers relaxed dining. Good menu choices and the staff were happy to accommodate my allergy intolerance with no problem.
We had a fabulous evening - our waitress was delightful and the food was excellent. Love the atmosphere and decor. Thank you for looking after us so well.
Food delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. Stable setting very nice. Water too expensive as came to circa £10 for one fizzy and one still.
Congratulations on providing us with fresh, quality food. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented. Our thanks to all the staff that looked after us. All in all, a perfect visit.
Great customer service and atmosphere.
Cannot fault it, food great, surroundings perfect and to top off a lovely day the service was friendly and welcoming.
Fabulous. Fabulous. Fabulous. Came for a lunch and th afternoon. The crab linguine was hot when it came to table and delicious. Such a pleasant wait staff and host. Love Cliveden and even though I could not stay the night this time, the team made me feel just at home for lunch.
