About The Astor Grill at Cliveden House
Located in the charming old stable block, which once housed Lord Astor’s most prized fillies. Adopting an equestrian theme in its decor, The Astor Grill is full of character offering a simple and informal approach to dining at Cliveden.
The all-day menu is overseen by Executive Chef André Garrett and it focusses on a mixture of classic American and British dishes, many reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents. The name – The Astor Grill – recalls the Astor family, who owned the house from the early 1900s. William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest citizen, then gave the house to his son and daughter in-law, Nancy Astor, in 1906, and Cliveden became a vibrant social hub for guests as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and Winston Churchill.
The Astor Grill today is a cosmopolitan venue which is steeped in history, its romantic setting offers all the style and legendary hospitality that Cliveden is famous for, and it is the perfect place to escape and enjoy an early lunch or a relaxed supper.
It’s was ok but not brilliant. We had to send the starter back as it wasn’t cooked properly and £28 for a Camembert I’d expect it to be great. The sparkling water was room temp and had no ice for the glasses and the champagne I ordered (1 glass at £17) was flat. I like coming to Cliveden and have had excellent meals in the main restaurant but Astor felt like an expensive pub. One top of that, tthe bill which we were sharing should have been split three ways which we asked for and one of my guest wanted to pay £20 cash to make her part on the card less but instead the staff took that cash and added the amount to my card payment thereby taking an extra £20 on top of the service charge which we didn’t notice until afterwards. I felt a bit duped by the staff taking the cash and not putting it towards the bill.
We had a lovely Anniversary Lunch on Sunday at the Astor Grill - all staff were friendly and professional - very relaxed. The food was very good - can definitely recommend the Sticky Date Pudding! Good to see Cliveden supporting local business - serving a selection of beers from a local brewery.
A perfect lunch with perfect service - a lovely little escape from lockdown!
The special a Dover Sole was lovely. Cod was too salty. The menu is a bit mundane for a grill in this setting.
Fabulous staff - they made a real effort for my birthday - very much appreciated.
It was our first time at the Astor Grill but not our last it was so fantastic the staff are amazing the food hot and tasty. We will be back
Very good food quality Great outside atmosphere Fantastic service from a very enthusiastic team! Thank you Team CH.
From the warm, friendly, and professional welcome we found the whole experience very enjoyable. The menu choice was excellent, as was the food, and the service attentive without being overbearing. A wonderful, relaxed experience in a magnificent setting.
Really lovely meal and very friendly and kind staff thank you for a lovely lunch. It was meant to be our wedding at cliveden today and lunch still made the day special !
Food very average with high prices, service good but very much let down by average food wouldn’t recommend
The service and atmosphere were good. It was my daughters 22nd birthday and were well looked after. We enjoyed the cocktails, burgers and the miso sesame salad but starters we had were only ‘OK’. The satay was very ordinary and at £15 I thought it was very over priced. Overall an enjoyable lunch and my daughter thought it was a great venue for her birthday.
This was our first time at a restaurant in over a year. It was such a pleasure. Thank you for a wonderful lunch in a delightful setting.
Great anniversary lunch with brilliant staff and a great setting. We had the chateaubriand which was delicious. The Sticky Date pudding was a highlight! Will be back :)
Lovely meal with impeccable service, as I’ve said the vagaries of our climate meant that it was still cold despite the heaters. I think extra heaters on the perimeter would help. Looking forward to dining indoors at The Astor. Hope that the menu is changed soon.
Our server was very knowledgeable about the wine and overall very warm.
We had a lovely lunch today with your team, we would love to go back soon
Very attentive service from the young lady who took our order. Indeed she remembered me from a previous visit and where I sat which is always going to flatter a customer.
We were just unlucky that the weather was windy and cold, I am sure if it had been warmer I would have rated 5 stars across the board. The food got cold quickly, not your fault but slightly less enjoyable, kept the wine nicely chilled though!! Just a shame you didn't supply complimentary blankets, I think asking guests to purchase a blanket was a bit much to be fair! Staff were all very professional, friendly and efficient, we will definitely visit again. Thank you.
We celebrated my wife’s birthday and the staff could not have done more to make our visit special Highly Recommended
In spite of only being able to eat outside on another cold May evening, we had a fantastic time. Delicious flatbreads for starters (mini pizzas!). Excellent cod and burger for our main course. Incomparable lemon posset for pudding. Great selection of wine by the glass. Massive thanks to Duarte, Sebastian and team for looking after us so well on our wedding anniversary.
Lovely meal and the staff really looked after us making my father’s birthday extra special. Music and some patio heaters and blankets would be the only improvements I could suggest in our current pandemic situation . Fish and chips and steak wonderful. Ditto sharing plate of breads.
I hadn't been to the Astor Grill before but I will certainly be coming back. Lots of choices for veggie and vegans, service was great and I'm sure that when we can be indoors the experience will be even better. A great balance of good food, service and lovely setting!
Food was expensive and very average quality. My £28 steak was cooked medium rare as I asked but was very tough. I could not be bothered to complain as it was my Birthday.
We were pleasantly surprised by how great the Astor Grill was despite only been able to accommodate us outdoors. The service was impeccable and food delicious as always. Can’t wait to return.
Bad service, overpriced food. Sat outside due to covid, so was a grand setting, but one that would be vastly improved with some plants and flowers. Heaters don't really work and they wanted to charge £15 for use of a blanket to keep warm. Better places to eat and drink
