About St Mary's Inn
St Mary's Inn is a contemporary gastro pub housed in the old administration building of St Mary's Hospital.
Three miles down a country road from the main village of Stannington just off the A1.
We serve great local food, local ale and supply quality wines and spirits. We are family friendly and we even welcome dogs and we look forward to welcoming you soon.
The food and service was excellent The live music was extremely good and created a nice welcoming atmosphere. An excellent night all round. Can’t wait to go back
Friendly service and a decent Sunday lunch. Enjoyed the beef and the strawberry shortcake.
Great food and great service.
All staff really friendly and welcoming. Food is beautiful, something for everyone on the menu. Great selection behind the bar. The rooms are well kept and spacious and very comfortable. The bar had a really great vibe with the band playing on Friday night. Thank you for a lovey stay
Excellent food, even better service.
Excellent food and service, will definitely be back and would recommend to friends.
Fantastic Sunday lunch.Great that every meat has a yorkshire pud, not just the beef. Also the caulifour cheese was great. Faultless. Whole party was made to feel welcome, from start to finish and we are left extremely satisfied. We will be back.
Excellent food with good service
Beautiful place nice pub but Sunday lunch was so salty it spoilt the meal and service was poor - what was most disappointing is that when we complained the manager just said sorry but didn’t seem care - not good if you want customers to return and spread a good word about the pub - he should have offered free coffee or dessert to compensate but because of this we would never recommend and we only have a negative comments to share with friends - reputation is everything in a remote pub so it needs to worker harder to build it !
Service very very slow, appears to be very young staff who don’t seem to be trained. It wasn’t even busy.
Wonderful evening spent in a delightful place. Would recommend to anyone.
My husband, daughter & I booked a table as we were looking forward to trying the new Steak Night offer at St Mary’s Inn. I can say that we were delighted with the quality of food and the deal is a great offer. Service was slow but I understand there were some staffing shortages. We did experience an issue with one of our meals but we were happy with the way it was dealt with. We look forward to visiting again soon.
Slow service Very poor menu choice terrible food Would not go back again Will be surprised if St Marys is still open this time next year
First time back since it reopened! Staff were lovely and very friendly food tasted great...the menu wasn’t very expansive which was disappointing ..no specials or afternoon teas I’d like to see those back in the future. As big as the place is we were all sat in one room would of liked to have been spread out a bit. A little bit of background music would be good might drown out the sound of the people at the bar....one guy in particular who was pleased to let everyone know how much he likes to annoy his neighbours by parking and leaving his car there for days! Nice bloke....not! All in al lovely to see you guys open again and we will be back
Food was very nice, atmosphere in bar is so much better than before. Service could of been quicker when we first arrived we had to wait for 10-15 minutes before our drink order was taken. Definitely will be back though!
We made a booking for Father’s Day and then changed the time on the day. This was no problem and was managed well. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. The roast chicken, pork and beef were all fantastic. We were really pleased and will be back!
We used to eat here when it first opened so were thrilled to hear it had reopened. Food was fabulous
Welcome return of a valued community asset
All great - very good service and food was fantastic
I think the staff waiting staff could do with some more training. They were so nervous and didn’t know which spoon to give us for soup or know the menu very well. Plates took a long time to be cleared. Teach them how to take short hand orders. Our poor girl wrote that entire name of the dish down. It look her for ever. Food for was very good though. Hope service will improve with experience
Great to see St Mary’s back in business! We tried the Sunday lunch first chance we got. The quality is as high as ever (best Roast in the North East), but the style is tweaked, a little more home style, with roasties to challenge your mums finest! Kids Sunday lunch is awesome value too. We will be back soon.
My wife and I were regular visitors to the Inn until the closure last year. We rated it very highly and it was always worth the 100 mile round trip from the Scottish Borders. We were delighted when we heard it was reopening and were keen to reserve a table as soon as we could. Unfortunately our first visit was a little disappointing. Mindful the restaurant has only just reopened. I fully understand that there are teething problems when an establishment starts up and it takes a little time to get up to speed but there were some basic things amiss. On arrival no one seemed to know we had a reservation and even after much shuffling of paperwork the staff were still unable to find “the list”. Eventually they gave up and we were told to sit wherever we like. This was in stark contrast to the efficient, friendly welcome we always found at St Mary’s. At first we got regular visits to ask if we were ready to order but then when we were no one came near. The service was not bad overall but was not great either, again falling far short of the standards set by the old place. The staff were courteous but a little wooden and the dialogue was little rehearsed. This will improve I am sure with more experience and as confidence grows. The food was reasonable and exceptionally good value. Had this been my first trip to St Mary’s I would have left thinking, that was OK, but I’m not in a desperate rush to rebook a table. My wife and I know how good this place used to be and we are sure it will get back on it’s feet very soon and be a real success. We will return in a few weeks and hopefully things will be as fantastic as before and we will be telling our friends that this is the place to come. Good luck and I hope to be writing a very positive review next time we visit.
I found the staff were excellent, even took one of my grandchildren to see the chef. I think that the new supplier of St Mary’s Ale has changed the recipe to its detriment. Overall it was a quiet for diners, but the food was very good
