Welcome to The Square & Compass. We look forward to being able to offer you good food and drink in a lovely location.
Our Head Chef and his team prepare seasonally influenced dishes that are beautifully presented and good value. Supporting the local community is very important to us and whenever possible, we source ingredients from local suppliers.
Our Main Menu offers a delicious range of starters, mains and desserts. We also have tasty burgers, pizzas and flatbreads available for you to try. And if it is a snack you are after, our sandwiches are served until 5pm.
Sundays are particularly special here. From 12noon - 9pm we serve chicken, beef, pork and lamb roasts as well as a fish and vegetarian option. We also have a number of 'Specials' for you to choose from.

Meals can be enjoyed in different areas throughout the Square & Compass including our stylish lounge bar, beautiful restaurant and large terrace.
Fantastic Sunday lunch once again. The food here is absolutely beautiful!!
Excellent food. Definitely will be back.
We had a lovely party here on 16 September. It went brilliantly. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food and drink were excellent and a good time was has by all. We would certainly recommend it as a venue for parties.
I booked a table for 20+ for Sunday Roast with our netball club as a preseason get together. They were efficient and very accommodating. They didn't ask for a deposit or pre order which meant everyone could choose what they wanted on the day. Letting us each pay for what we had at the end made a huge difference when splitting the bill. Would certainly book here again with a large party.
Perfect place for a perfect Sunday - Lovely!
Absolutely excellent, the best Sunday Roast experience ever!
Brilliant Sunday roast and service! 5 stars all round!
Our waiter was superb. Really friendly guy. Great choice of food especially for someone as fussy with food as I am. I had to remind the waiter about my onion rings and so was waiting on those before I could start my main meal. The dessert I fancied on the menu wasn't available so that was a disappointment. But on the whole it was all good. Our 2nd visit. I love the wild turkey whisky with honey. Delicious. We'll definitely be back. Just hope they remember the onion rings and have that dessert next time.
We came as a treat as it is quite expensive. We know it costs a lot as we've been many times before and the food is normally lovely. On this occasion though the food was not up to its usual high standard. We had Sunday dinner and apart from the cabbage and carrots everything was extremely over cooked and bland. It took me forever to cut into the potatos and Yorkshire puds as they were so over cooked! I got the vegetarian option with was tasteless and my husband got the lamb which was tiny off cuts which were very fatty. The service was fantastic was just a shame about the food.
First visit for many years as a group of 6. Was a Monday night and only 3 staff on but despite how busy they were was impressed with how well they coped and their hard work and proprofessional manner. Special mention to the waitress who was about to leave due to university. Good food.
Excellent specials of deep fried Camembert and chicken liver pâté
We had an excellent meal - very helpful staff
Very nice Sunday lunch. Meat was melt in the mouth, Will definitely go here again!!
I normally love the food at The Square + Compas but last Sunday was very disappointing. We had booked out table for 5.30 for a Sunday Lunch. Both myself and my husband had starters we enjoyed. For main I had chicken, my husband had lamb. The chicken and lamb tasted lovely but for both of us both the roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were totally dried out, I would have found it easier to cut the potatoes if I'd had a steak knife. I completely understand the volume of food required to provide Sunday lunch for large numbers but it would probably get better to stop serving the Sunday roast earlier in the day rather than send out poor standard food into the evening.
Lovely lunch with friends. Sausages a little overcooked and dry but otherwise great.
We all enjoyed our evening; there was a good atmosphere and service was quick and unobtrusive. Unlike our last two visits, all of our menu choices were available, which was excellent.
We enjoyed our meal to celebrate a cousins 70th Birthday and Golden Wedding Anniversary. The only comment we would make was that the service was a little slow. Everything else was as I expected having dined ther several times before
Excellent quality of food and service. Have always found staff to be very attentive and professional.
Review as per TripAdvisor: Arrived around 5pm on a Sunday to have a drink before our meal and despite four people standing behind the bar it took them 15 mins to serve us (only one person was actually serving the bar, the rest were waiting on the restaurant). Our table was booked for 6pm, we were seated on time and ordered almost straight away. After waiting for 40 minutes we ordered another round of drinks which again took 15 mins to arrive. Following this, after asking twice as to it's whereabouts, our food materialised at 7:15pm with no offer of condiments. As it turns out the roast dinner was actually good, it's just unfortunate that I had lost the will to live waiting for it. I actually felt bad for the young girl waiting on our table as she was very polite and upbeat despite the obvious disappointment on our part. Overall, every element of the service was poor and I even struggled to pay as no one came to clear our plates and bring the bill until I got up to go to the bar. No offer of discount which would have made up for some of it. Wouldn't bother going back despite the decent food as there are dozens of good pubs in the area with far better service.
As usual wasn't disappointed.
Usually great but items where missing from dishes and food was tasted very disappointing. Possibly just a blip, we hope!
Slow getting our table by 45 mins even though booked apart from that everything lovely.
Service was very slow. Food was average. Both salmon and mackerel starters had bones in and the ratio of bread to pâté was poor. The 4 roast beef dinners were of uneven sizes and the vegetables were poorly matched. The quality of the horse radish sauce was of a typical catering standard. Disappointing considering it was recommended and we travelled from York.
From start to finish the service is excellent, friendly staff make you feel really welcome and the food is great. The menu gives you a wide variety to choose from catering for all palettes. "Book early to avoid disappointment"
Great time, great atmosphere
