About The Square & Compass
Good food and drink in a lovely village location.

Lovely lunch - service and food were excellent!
We really enjoyed our visit, the food was lovely the only down side was it was very dark in the area we were sat and quiet difficult to see what we were eating, luckily it tasted fab.
As fabulous as always - great food, lovely atmosphere and good service.
Beef stringy and tough. Creamed leeks like jelly. Meal replaced and free desert given. Food is usually very good when it is right but a bit hit and miss. Prices seen to have crept up and we are considering value for money now.
It was unnecessary to say that we would only have the table until 8.15, the restaurant was quiet, but we ordered food immediately instead of not rushing our meal. The food was fabulous having said that.
It’s very disappointing that you have no child specific menu. The majority of the main meals that can be halfed are not suitable for young children
Dear Jenny - Thank you for your comments. We offer a children's menu during the week - but because our Sunday Menu is so popular we tend to adapt our Sunday dishes for younger guests. But we are grateful for your feedback which we will discuss. Best wishes. Sam Roffe, The Square & Compass.
Tough beef and blood in chicken meal, sent back to kitchen under complaint. Manager credited one meal and handled the situation well, but sorry will not be returning.
Great food, great attmosphere, we had a lovely time, the only improvement I would make is allowing children’s menu on Sundays not just midweek.
Many thanks for your suggestion Nicola. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes. Sam Roffe, Malvern Inns.
A lovely setting for our family meal.
Lovely food and great service.
I avoided the roast dinner option and chose a pork meal but still received a roast meal with yorkshire pudding etc. Served very quickly (obviously not freshly prepared) - probably heated up from lunch. Yorkshire pudding was barely warm!! My wife had Haddock & chips, plenty of food but she said the fish was tasteless!! This was disappointing since my wife had visited the Square & Compass several weeks before and enjoyed her lunch.
Dear Gary - Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry your meal was not the 5* quality we aim to offer all our guests. We will discuss your feedback with our kitchen team and look at what we needed to do better for you. Best wishes. Sam Roffe, The Square & Compass.
Always great food and portions. Lovely team as ever However busy!!
Moved to Harrogate in February 18 and have visited many places for a Sunday Roast and found my first time visit at the Compass to now top the list of the best... Service, decor, and above all the food/ meat was tender and a nice plateful. Ordered the Risotto and the Squid as starters, excellent presentation and taste. The lamb and Beef was the best I've had in a pub. Ordered the feast (be hungry) and the crackling in a side cup was a lovely touch. Will definitely be going again very soon and would highly recommend. My compliments to the obviously very hard working people in what must be a very busy kitchen. The waitress was friendly and welcoming. Sorry did not get her name. Booked at 2 and was respectfully asked online if I could vacate the table by 3.15 which was initially a worry but the food arrived timely and by 3.00 the two of us was ready to depart. I am sure for larger parties and if you pre-book for longer periods this would be accommodated if requested. The place was very busy and was run like a well oiled machine, having run a large business myself I give my compliments to the management on a slick job. I am sure you will get the odd time something isn't right but thats a numbers game and happens.... Go judge for yourself. This is a honest unbiased review who doesn't normally leave reviews but this place deserved it.
Dear Gary - Thank you for your detailed review which we will share with the whole of our team. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes from us all.
Delicious food served by attentive and polite staff. Lovely surroundings.
Such a lovely waitress served us.
Great atmosphere, service, & food. Good choice of beers & wine. Lovely on a summers day when the patio doors are pushed back, and cosy & welcoming on a chilly evening with a warming fire. The square & compass is a favourite of ours.
Visited for Sunday dinner for the first time in a while. Very good dinner and a healthy size portion ! The service was good as well despite being quite busy. I would certainly visit again for Sunday dinner in the near future.
Very good food but waited over 20 minutes for order to be taken and to be served drinks which had just been left on a tray at the side of a bar despite reserving a table in advance. Waiter who served us was very friendly and apologetic though.
Came for Sunday lunch for my birthday, everything was very good, very enjoyable time.
Good service as ever.
Great Sunday Roast....staff are always so friendly and helpful.
Thetr was an initial mix up with our food order initially. The table next to us got 2 of our 3 dishes, one being actually not what the lady on the table ordered but she kept eating when she had found out the mistake that it was lamb, not beef. My friend had food put infront of her which then got taken away without explanation, just told that it had come out at the wrong time. Then for dessert when asking if the brownie was hazelnut chocolate (due to an allergy to hazelnuts) the waiter was unsure and came back from the kitchen saying it was chocolate chocolate... allergies are a major issue and the people serving the food need to be more aware of what is in it. Then I offered to free up the table for drinks at the bar, at which the waiter reassured us we could stay put. Only to then be moved once we were mid way through our drinks. The food however was outstanding, I can appreciate at sunday lunch time it is a busy time, but the service was disappointing.
Ate here Sunday evening and had the roasts. All were excellent with superb quality meats, all food was freshly prepared and delicious. We will definitely be abck
Superb Sunday lunch, friendly, professional, family visiting from Canada and you did a British Sunday roast proud.
Thank you for your feedback Nicola. It is great to know you and your Canadian visitors enjoyed being here.
We were a party of 12 this time and still the food and service was amazing! Thank you
A pleasure Vicky. Our whole team will be thrilled to read your 'Thank you',
