About Senate Room
In a magnificent room overlooking Burlington Gardens, Senate Room at the Royal Academy of Arts has been restored and embellished by Sir David Chipperfield RA. It’s a perfect spot for a light lunch, afternoon tea or some elegant evening cocktails.
Inspired by its Italianate surroundings, the menu features a selection of antipasti, salads and crostini alongside daily pasta specials, cured hams and regional cheeses, accompanied by a range of proseccos, Italian wines and classic soft drinks. Afternoon Tea is also inspired by the flavours of Italy, with both sweet and savoury treats to enjoy.
By night, the lights lower and a specially curated range of spirits and cocktails is on offer, alongside our range of hams, cheeses, and olives.
We booked the afternoon tea as we were spending time in the RA that day. I booked via Afternoon tea and had a reservation. On arrival, I offered my reference and was told this wasn't needed. At the end of the tea, I had to ask for the discount, as they weren't aware my booking included this. The service and staff were very good. The quality and flavour of the food was very good too. However, I felt the portion size of the sandwiches very small, and the whole party was left wanting more. The scones were beautiful, and the cakes extremely tasty. Usually afternoon tea fills me up, on this occasion it didn't. One of our party asked for more tea, and was just provided with hot water. 3 ladies, we had a lovely afternoon, and the atomoshphere was good. But I have to say, I felt it wasn't great value, even though I did receive a discount. The portions should have been larger.
Very peaceful place for lunch but that is really the best feature. Slow service and poor food
I was disappointed that when I asked for gluten-free bread, I was only given a few bread sticks.
A really lovely mother’s day tea with my family .
Not a great choice for each course and the portions of lasagne and pasta of the day were too small although tasty. The panacotta pudding with rhubarb was delicious. Not good value for money.
Excellent atmosphère, lieu calme et reposant après une visite fatigante. La qualité de la nourriture est bonne mais il y a parfois un goût de 'trop peu'.
What is missing in Central London is a place for older people to go to quietly relax in physical comfort and enjoy a full set English tea with little distraction apart from the ceremonial aspects. We were a party of ‘older people’, Friends of the RA, and we intended to take in an exhibition as part of our afternoon. So we were enthusiastic to try the Italianate set Tea at The Senate Room. The first disappointment was with the narrowness of the room - very high ceilings beautifully decorated and thoroughly classic Italian in elegance, but the narrowness of the room meant less sense of space and comfort. The tables are small (quite mean) and close together which is less conducive to the sense of occasion a formal set tea demands. There was so little space on the table once the teapots and the food started to arrive that the waiter had to remove the water glasses, the little cacti plants, salt and pepper, and anything else not immediately being used! The fun of a formal set tea is the wide selection of savoury and sweet offerings that each person in the party can choose, but The Senate Room made the choice for each party member - for my party, we would have preferred all offerings to be laid out on a tiered platter set in the middle of a larger table, or on a trolley brought round to each of us several times during the set tea, so that each of us could have chosen his or her favourites. We would have preferred an equal number of savoury options to sweet ones. This was not the case. Lastly the desired sense of quietude during the set tea - when we arrived on time at 3pm there was pop style music on fairly loudly. I asked if it could be turned down, and thankfully it was - older people often have time, inclination and money to indulge in a formal set tea, but too often they may have hearing (and other disablement) difficulties. If they are forced to compete with piped music they are unlikely to want to return again. Thank you for turning the music down. May I suggest that the music change at 3pm from pop to something more classic, perhaps Italianate as well? so long as it is soft and in the background.... The service was attentive, but it could be better in the sense of the waiters having more detailed info about the food being served. The tea selection was excellent, but the Japanese iron tea pots almost too heavy for my guests to lift up and pour. There were empty water glasses on the table but we were not offered table water. MY guess is that your set Tea will not be as popular as your lunches, you informal afternoon tea time offerings, and the bar function in the evening - perhaps the Senate Room is trying to be too many things to too many different people? Food: all very nice. Thank you!
I enjoyed my first two visits to Senate Room - both times I had a selection of tasty, fresh and well-priced small plates. This time, tried a main course - a very disappointing lasagne. This was a very small portion, not freshly prepared, not warmed up properly, and overpriced at around £12. My tip, go for the small plates and avoid the mains.
I wish there were porcelain cups and pot instead of clay ones
A gem! (with excellent and friendly service)
Great place for a light lunch between exhibitions
Beautiful contemporary space. Staff were extremely helpful. We booked for afternoon tea, but none of us was hungry enough. Staff made no problem about our changing to a lighter option.
Set menu ideal and good value
Lovely surrounding. The RA membership discount does not work for lunch time..shame😔
Helpful email exchanges with Paolo beforehand led to a successful treat for my goddaughter, with 'Happy Birthday' inscribed on the plate in chocolate icing. Only glitch was an automated email requiring me to confirm the full afternoon tea which I had not agreed to previously. Was reassured in a subsequent email to take no notice, but a good idea I think to teach the automated system to understand the reality.
Great atmosphere and good food in a beautiful building.
The food is delicious. Perfect for a light lunch
It was a very lovely occasion and both the staff and the food could not have been better
A special place. a very welcome addition to the RA
One of London's hidden gems!
What a hidden gem of a restaurant! Amazing food, particularly liked the beef carpaccio, will definitely be back.
The staff were very friendly, and the food was lovely. Well presented and really tasty!
Service was excellent; food was good. Only gripe I have is that toilets are a long way from the restaurant area
Prices for wine exorbitant.
