About Royal Standard of England
Welcome dear Pilgrim to the oldest free house in England.
For Over 900 years, this hostelry has been known throughout
the land for giving shelter and hospitality to the wayfarer.
Go in peace.
Go Gently, Pilgrim.
The pub is an absolute classic, however it’s not designed for covid-19 times - there was a long wait to be taken to our (reserved) table and table service was slow throughout, although the kitchen seemed to be working at good speed. It won’t put me off going again but, like most people and establishments, I’m looking forward to when this has all blown over.
Pre Covid great place Now too many tables all together so too many people in worse still too little staff and very inexperienced staff for a busy Sunday lunch service Resulting in as poor a service than ever received almost anywhere. So bad it became laughable the amount of mistakes made nothing was right!
We come here alot. We were here the Sunday 25th of October. We really like the place. However this time around we waited 50 minutes just for our drinks and water. Then it all came at once. Food and drinks. Its nice to just have a drink then food.
Covid /Pandemic management was appalling - the worst I’ve seen - staff not using the one way system - queuing to get in was the worst bit, people kept squeezing in - need to be a front of house person just getting people seated and really need to greet people at the door so waiting isn’t in a walkway - drinks orders were got wrong - cutlery and drinks arrived after food - expensive for what it was Overall, I wouldn’t go back during a pandemic and feel it was the biggest risk I’ve put myself in and haven’t felt like that in any other pub
The tables were too close to be Covid secure. You allowed a table of 7 to sit between 2 tables of 4 which is against the rules. This meant that they were leaning across us talking to each other in what was already too cramped a space. It was not possible to socially distance and we had to leave.
All wonderful x
Love the royal standard of England, lovely staff, love the food and quirky decor. Highly recommend and will be back again soon : )
We love this place! One of our favourites! Never been disappointed on the food.....I would love to recommend it to everyone but want to keep it a secret!
Hands down my favourite place.
Nice pub, a bit chilly inside - wear warm clothes. Service was good, possibly a little pushy on trying to persuade us to try the nibbles.... food was nice, maybe a little garnish to go with toasts would look better - crisps or salad. Good place for a meal after a walk.
Shame the menus changed! Starter menu used to be fantastic, bring the pate and rarebit back! :)
Have been many times over many years and RS continues to excel. Well done!
The staff were so attentive and lovely! The atmosphere was amazing and the pies were delicious! Will be back soon.
Very welcoming. Good service.
We had such a wonderful evening here. The service, food, atmosphere was all brilliant. We will definitely be coming back. Thank you!
Lovely staff, good Food. Amazing interior. Beautiful surrounding countryside. 100% recommend.
Absolutely excellent pies - we were recommended them by friends and they did not disappoint at all. The best I’ve ever had. The building is amazing, I’d love to be able to stay over! The staff were perfect and the whole visit was a real pleasure. We hope we can visit again, we don’t live too close but will try.
Sensational, seriously - taken back in time, gorged ourselves 'til we sighed, warmed by a roaring fire, wandered happily out into a fresh evening in the silence. This isn't a pub, it's a life experience. See you soon...
We've had another nice Sunday lunch at the Royal Standard yesterday! Despite Covid, the experience was very good - the only slightly annoying thing was the draft from the exit door that was open and I was exposed to that. I didn't complain though as fresh air is important these days. Will prepare and dress more warmly in the future. The food was tasty, our Greek waitress very friendly and service was fast. We'll definitely come back. We had our walk before lunch as we ate so much and could hardly walk afterwards:-))
Excellent vibes and delicious food!
Excellent Sunday lunch for 6 of us, including 4 vegans who were able to enjoy a beautiful mushroom & sherry suet pudding served with roast potatoes and delicious vegetables.
Great food, great beer and a good atmosphere, warm and cosy. Very friendly staff.
Starters were very slow to come out, but the mains are such big portions and good value for money, everyone quickly forgot about the starters!
