9 course taster meal quite special Great variety & contrast Quality is excellent
Delectable, Delicious, Delightful
Lovely food and lovely service. The only down side was- I mentioned when I booked the table and on arrival that we didint want any fish dishes, yet they still served one fish curry. Tasted lovely, but wasn't sure why they served it. Would recommend and would come back again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. From the ambience of the restaurant, which we felt very relaxed in, to the friendly staff and of course, the outstanding food. We liked the interaction of having different staff bringing out each course (including James himself, who although i am sure is very busy in the kitchen, seemed to enjoy coming out to see everyone) and we felt very well looked after all evening. We enjoyed every single dish of the 9 course menu (although could call it 12 course!) especially the lasagna which sounds so simple yet have never tasted something so outstanding. Thank you to James and his talented team for a really special evening. Will definitely be back for the next special occasion!
Beautiful food and lovely but professional staff. Well done!
Great food and atmosphere! We had the a la carte menu, the entrees were superb, especially the 'pea' dish was a definite signature dish. The main, fish and lamb, were superbly cooked but the green vegetables were overcooked (pok choi) & some were undercooked! The service was good but we felt was not attentive enough as the waiter was by himself serving 5 to 6 tables - not his fault as he was really friendly and good but we felt the restaurant needed extra pair of hand even with the help of the Maitre D...
On business trip from London and, for a change, looked further afield than central Cardiff for an evening meal with colleagues. Really glad we did! The 6 course tasting menu was excellent, so full of flavour and surprise and, when coupled with the excellent service, ambience and wine list, what more do you need to wind down at the end of a busy day. Definitely worth the short taxi ride to Penarth.
After a 5th visit James Sommerin still has the wow factor! It is a journey for the taste buds with exceptional service .
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. thoroughly enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyed the surprise 6 course tasting menu with wine pairing (chose 2 of the dishes). The experience was exceptional.
Absolutely fantastic experience. Each dish of the 9 course taster menu we had was delivered with outstanding professionalism and each dish was extraordinarily good. The staff are extremely friendly and provide a perfect dining experience from start to finish.
An amazing dining experience, staff were welcoming and friendly. Fantastic food and wine, we will certainly be coming back soon!
Staff very professional and knowledgeable especially Nick, all staff very friendly, definitely will be back.
Wine prices somewhat excessive
Exquisite food with service that struck the right balance of attentive but unintrusive
Our host was excellent, superb service and great recommendations
Excellent meal and friendly and knowledgeable staff
Everytime we've visited, everything about RJS has been outstanding...the excellence and creativity of the food; the exquisite wines; the precision of the friendly, unobtrusive service; and the beautiful seafront location. A restaurant doesn't get better than this...thank you James and Louise for choosing to come to Penarth.
Unfortunately we didn't have a particularly enjoyable time. Service was strained and inattentive, often with less than a smile. We were provided with a dirty glass. When this was mentioned, no apology, just a disbelieving stare. One of us has crab to start and found four of five significant sized shards of shell and membrane/bone. A hint of apology and that was it. Had to pour my own water. Overall the service was really lacking and this was with a half full restaurant. Food was beautifully presented. The flavours were good, but unfortunately nothing special. A lack of depth and a lack of excitement. Nothing that stands out. Finally, we came here for a special anniversary dinner, which I pointed out on my booking. Not a mention of it. It is a shame as we don't eat particularly well in Cardiff and thought that this may be a banker. Guess not.
Apsolutly fabulous as usual. All the staff went the extra mile to make our visit special.
We did the 6 course taster menu and was blown away with the quality of the food, the presentation and the service we received. We would definately recommend and return.
The food was exquisite as always and Catherine was a delight. Catalin is a wonderful addition to the team and service overall was impeccable--like the food. AS I siad to Cathy-- James rally erves a second star. I have eaten in so many 2 stars in London that are not nearly as good.
We visited James Sommerin mid week having pre booked the 6 course tasting menu along with bed & breakfast. Having looked at the wonderful menu we decided upon the 9 course menu- this also came with additional courses! The food was exceptional. The flavours were absolutely beautiful, the food exquisitely presented. Part of the kitchen is glass which allows you to see the very calm chefs working away doing their magic. Each course came out presented by the chef who had prepared it with a brief description which was a very nice touch. The restaurant itself is very welcoming, beautifully designed and decorated, contemporary but cosy-nothing pretentious. Perfect lighting & music made for a very relaxed evening. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. Everything moved along quietly without any stuffiness but was absolutely 1st class. Our evening was made even more special as James Sommerin served our wine at each course and chatted about the dishes. The work that goes into preparing food of this standard is quite something. The whole experience was fabulous-probably one of the best Michelin starred restaurants we’ve eaten in....if not the best. The food is truly amazing. Next time we visit we will book for 7.30 rather than 8pm if having the tasting menu as it’s quite a long dining experience!
First class food, wine and service at a surprisingly good price. Felt really relaxed there as well and would definitely go back.
