About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Four of us had a celebratory Sunday lunch. We had the beef, the belly pork and the halibut all delicious and cooked perfectly. Nice roast veg and tasty puds and wines and coffees. Particular praise for the gooseberry tart, the home-made lime cordial, and the halibut being poached before final cooking. To say nothing of the pork belly which was beautifully cooked with all-round crackling. Our favourite restaurant and a great treat!
This was our second visit to the Red Lion for a meal. The food was fantastic. The service was first class again. A very enoyable experience
Delicious food in lovely surroundings but a place to go for a celebration because its not cheap!
A fantastic evening, everything was perfect. Will definitely look to book a room next time! Thank you to the whole team.
Outstanding food - consommé to die for! In fact, the best meal we have had for a long time, including some other Michelin star establishments. The only reason it’s not a 5 is that the breakfast was poor. Streaky bacon burnt and almost inedible and massively hard sourdough toast- service from Frank, however, was very friendly and efficient - we did not say anything at the time as we were in a hurry with a long journey ahead. Service in the evening was friendly and efficient in front of the bar, i.e. front of house - not so good from behind the bar - not very welcoming nor engaging. Overall, a very enjoyable evening and we would definitely return
Your staff looked -after us well- but there were long pauses between courses when we were effectively ignored.
Superb food and drink, excellent service and wonderful atmosphere
As ever the food and service was excellent. The drinks are a little over priced.
Lovely as ever. Excellent service, food and wine. Can’t wait for our next visit. Thank you.
Really friendly and informed staff, even when I questioned them about Brinkburn!! Lovely relaxed dining experience, not at all stuffy like previous Michelin star experiences
Exciting and imaginative menu with plenty of variety. Staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We were also offered complimentary drinks to begin for our anniversary which was a lovely touch.
great food and drinks. staff very friendly looks a bit tired tho( its pub not like restaurant setting), however is great and we had a great food
Beautiful Sunday roast in cosy pub setting. Very dog and child friendly. Only slight negative was table water took a while to arrive and then was carbonated instead of tap. Otherwise very happy with our experience
Considering that we had travelled a long way, and booked 6 weeks in advance, I felt that we were put in a corner and overlooked for most of the evening. The staff seemed to be either absent or distracted. The starter of grilled scallop in umami broth was very delicious, the risotto unfortunately was over salted. Our mains of roast pork were very tough and chewy and we would have sent them back to the kitchen had there been any staff in attendance. After waiting 10mins or so of not being able to attract anyone’s attention, I returned to my plate and found the meat slightly less difficult to cut, so I suspect they were not property rested when they came out the oven. The pannacotta was disappointing - more like a chocolate mousse in a mug. When I paid the bill, I commented that it han been difficult to get the attention of staff - this was met with silence. A simple apology would have been appreciated . As we left we encountered one of front of house (standing outside!) who then complained to us about a large party in the private dining room. So unprofessional - we won’t be back. All in all - very disappointing
Some local walking trail printouts on the bar might be nice to help customers work up an appetite?! Absolutely wonderful food, staff and ambiance, it is difficult to over rate the Red Lion, it’s Michelon star is very well deserved!
Superb meal. Many thanks
A well thought out and crafted experience; we stayed at the Troutbeck Guest House and ate in the Red Lion. The food for both the evening meal and breakfast was excellent. We especially welcomed the locally sourced produce.
Fantastic meal all round. Can’t wait to come back - I’ve already chosen my selection for next visit! Sad the strawberry salad wasn’t on the dessert menu (my favourite dessert EVER) but the baked Alaska made up for it...
The standards were as high as ever; there is no where I would rather take my clients. Thanks again, Laurence
Amazing food, service and atmosphere as usual!
Best Sunday roast I've had in a long time. Meat and vegetables cooked to perfection. Attentive service and prompt delivery of meals. On the expensive side for a Sunday roast but well worth it. Looking forward to our next visit.
Loved it! Delicious food. And to quote my husband - very possibly the best Sunday roast he's had in the UK (he had the beef). Just wish the Red Lion was a bit closer to where we live... (~1.5 hours away - we were passing by the area)
First class. We will be back - regularly.
