About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Thank you for contributing so much to our birthday celebrations at the weekend. The level and style of service was spot on and your food, as always, is truly beautiful and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to our next visit. Thank you once again.
Absolutely fantastic food with a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. Wonderfully welcoming staff and prompt service. A great alternative to a substandard Sunday carvery!
Lovely welcome and delicious food and drink. A real treat!
Always fantastic food and lovely service from Frank.
A thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.
Very impressed, super treat for our 38th wedding anniversary. Excellant meal with thoughtful, interesting, well matched wine to accompany. Very knowledgeable bar manager and pleasant waiting staff. Thank you all.
We had a lovely lunch for Rob's birthday. The food was delicious & we couldn’t have been more looked after. Thanks to all of you xxx
a splendid dining experience!!
Gorgeous country pub in a well-kept, scenic village. The staff were all very friendly, polite and helpful. The food was excellent and varied. We visited as a birthday treat and stayed overnight in the nearby accommodation, which was beautiful. We aim to make it a yearly treat.
A great find!
Faultless on all fronts. Thank you. Don't ever leave us! Devoted local.
Staff very friendly, food was excellent. Would recommend
Fantastic evening meal followed by a beautiful breakfast. I could not find fault with any of it. Really enjoyable and set in the most beautiful countryside.
Exquisite food, wonderful combination of flavours, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented.
The food was delicious as always, with a varied range of options to suit most tastes, and some interesting combinations of flavour, texture, and intensity. The staff were fantastic, attentive yet unobtrusive. A great experience that we're still talking about days later.
Staff were incredible; Frank is a gem.... a really superb treasure in England thank you!
My wife and I had dinner on Saturday night. We have been before. The service was excellent, again, and the staff incredibly willing to adjust the menu for us on request. I could not fault their willingness to assist in any way could. I had the special to start: scallop and chorizo tortelloni. It was good, if a little salty. My wife had the crab tart, which she enjoyed. For our mains the staff were good enough to allow me to have a chateaubriand for one as my wife is vegetarian. It was perfect!
We all agreed it was probably the best roast we've ever had! A huge call but a reflection of how good it was. Thank you!
Lovely pub in beautiful country location. Held my husband’s 70th birthday celebration lunch here for 14 adults and three children in their private dining room, and very happy with quality and choice of food and wine. Martin very helpful with all communications regarding arrangements and on the day all staff were very pleasant, professional and unobtrusive yet readily to hand. Sunny weather meant we were also able to make full use of the garden for pre-drinks and coffee afterwards. Lucky find and sure we will revisit.
We are always delighted to visit the Red Lion. To explain the 2 lower ratings. Atmosphere - this scored lower due to the constant lift muzak. I'm not sure that music is really necessary, but my memories are that it was better in the past. If there is going to be music, then it should be interesting but not intrusive. Service: generally good, but there was a mix up with us being asked to order dessert before having been served the main. Also we asked for a 10 min break before dessert, but this turned into 25 min & it meant that we had not time for a post dinner drink (taxi waiting). My partner felt that she would have expected wine to have been topped up regularly, although I'm less sure given the more informal dining approach of the pub. Anyway, we will be back & may book a room.
We love the Red Lion with its relaxed atmosphere, wonderful food and great staff. It's equally perfect for a casual mid week lunch or a special occasion celebration. It is consistently excellent and never disappoints. Thanks to all the team at the Red Lion!
Excellent, as always. The food and service never disappoint. Consistently very high standard of cuisine. A gem.
Fantastic meal matched with great service. 10/10
We had a lovely unplanned summer’s evening there and would love to be a bit more local. Went on the recommendation of a friend and will definitely be back again. The food was fantastic so much so we had three courses! The drinks selection is also impressive. Many thanks.
