About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
We love it here and have visited a number of times. The food is spectacular, incredibly tasty without being pretentious, and incredibly good value for money. I also love that it’s a proper pub, somewhere you actually would come for just a drink and to catch-up. Super cozy and super tasty, can’t rave enough. Clear why it has a Michelin star!
I can't speak highly enough of your pub. I brought some clients, on a gamble, on a friend's recommendation. Great staff, great food, great ambience. I'll be back whenever I can and will recommend you to others every time. Thank iii and I wish you well.
As always, everything was first class. Despite offering Michelin star food, top service and a fantastic bar offering, the Red Lion never forgets that it is a pub and the bloke sat at the bar with his dog drinking a pint is always made just as welcome as the family eating a 3 course meal. I love this place and it suits for any occasion!
The Red Lion is our favourite place - the staff are so welcoming and friendly and the food is always absolutely excellent. Whenever family ask what we would like as a gift for birthdays or Christmas we always answer "a voucher for The Red Lion please".
One of the most enjoyable restaurant that I've been in this year
Great food and service thanks very much.
I wanted a great place to eat dinner the night before my Early Stones Tour and found the Red Lion on tripadvisor . Loved it so much, I went back for breakfast the next morning too! The place reminds me of something out of Tolkein and the food is outstanding The host Frank and the staff are amazing and attentive. ! I loved the fresh food and the atmosphere and I definitely will return again. Thanks guys! it was magical.
Enjoyed our lunch. Kitchen kindly provided a different sauce with a fish dish for a person with a shellfish allergy.
The log fire was beautiful, but the pub was far too hot taking into account the weather conditions, there was no need for the fire to be over loaded with logs.
Visited with my nephew and his young family for lunch and the whole experience was lovely. The food and service were fantastic (as always) and the little folk were looked after splendidly. Right up there with the very best dining pubs in the country.
Excellent as usual.
Fantastic food in a beautiful setting. Worth staying over for sure
Flawless service and food
Really good lunch and attentive service. We have eaten with you many times and look forward to coming back. James
We left a form when checking put.
Recommended here by a friend and it didn't disappoint. We loved the mussels and the rib of beef!
A wonderful evening. Thank you all so much!
Sadly, we felt our meal on Saturday was overpriced and underexciting. Added to this, the lighting was so low that I didn't see till I used my phone torch that my cauliflower dish was bright yellow - it looked a muddy brown, and I'm sure that affected the taste, which seemed muddled. The genoise in the cafe gourmand was particularly disappointing - dry sponge, with a woody chunk of pomelo and blob of compote - though the raspberry quenelle was very good indeed and the other elements were fine. My husband's grouse was OK, but no more than that, and for over £30 in a pub, it should have been wonderful. Crab tart was good, though clearly reheated, and the chicken liver pate was fine but unexceptional. Service was swift and efficient and staff were pleasant. But we are unlikely to return or recommend - £150 for two should have given us a really good meal, but I'm afraid it was really quite ordinary.
The whole experience has been wonderful. The staff are friendly and very welcoming, especially having a baby with us. The food has been outstanding, exceeded our expectations!
A lovely evening in a friendly atmosphere, with great food.
Had been nervous about trying the broccoli soup with mussels and furikake but it was delicious and likewise the sage ice cream that accompanied the caramelised apple and candied walnuts was delicate and delightful. Hope we can return soon. .
Food is consistently excellent with the menu frequently evolving with innovative choices to reflect seasonal produce. Service is good but moreion te casual side - no silver service here!
Absolutely fantastic meal in a beautiful setting. Loved it.
