About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Wonderful night. Service was great without being in your face. No rush. Good food definetly worth a visit
We were a group of seven, members of a sporting group who dines together with some frequency. We all agreed that the Red Lion dinner was the highlight of the year, and the best we have had for some time. Outstanding food, complemented by friendly service in a nice pub...a pleasure for us all.
As always, had a fabulous NY's eve tasting menu dinner at the RL. They never fail to come up with new ideas and the food was excellent.
a very pleasant lunch on new years day
Thank you once again for a fantastic gourmet experience. See you again in 2019.
Fabulous lunch. Great, relaxed atmosphere.
The food was clearly a cut above your average, and very well cooked. Admittedly, this was our first visit to a Michelin star pub instead of restaurant, but given the prices we paid are equivalent to a lunch menu at the local starred restaurant to us, we would have expected an amuse Bouch and some bread for the price we paid. The food was tasty, but value for money was slightly lacking.
Thoroughly enjoyed by all... the children would have loved more of the icecream! Thank you very much.
Food was fab, and service first rate. What more can I say?
2nd time at the Red Lion fantastic on both occasions
Your food is a sensation , clear rich flavours in which you can taste each and every subtle component , Truly beautiful ingredients handled with extraordinary skill and love which when combined like this becomes a thoroughly class act.. Expensive but worth every penny . Well done and thank you.!
Lovely restaurant and food good service , thought the mains were a little small and i would much prefer to tip on the service we received rather than a very expensive service charge .
Excellent as always. Started with the onion tart, packed full of flavour and beautiful crispy pastry. Shared the Chateaubraind of beef (served to perfection) and then the milt chocolate Panna cotta, how can you pack so much flavour into such a small plate? Loved the whole experience.
Great food, nice to experience abit of the finer things in life
The red lion is a lovely little country pup it has an old rustic feel without a speck of dust in sight. The staff where very helpful and knoligebel about the food they were serving. One member of staff even told me the farm where there goats cheese came from. The food was amazing from the first bite to the last I head a smile on my face. If you want a lovely meal out with excellent service this is the place to go.
I would have appreciated the heavy dining chair being pulled out for me as I was carrying a big winter coat and my drink.
Excellent meal as always
Superb in all respects, what a delightful place. Your staff were excellent, well informed about the menu and attentive. The atmosphere was perfect, we really like the informal gastro pub feel. The dishes we had were beautifully presented, well balanced and seasoned. The accompanying wine choices superb. We feel happy to return for any occasion, be it business entertaining, family gathering or just a cosy pint and a lunch after a dog walk. Well done, we will be back.
A delightful lunch yesterday with roast goose which I’ve never before seen on a British menu. It was a delicious festive treat and beautifully cooked. Wasn’t thrilled to see a customer’s dog sitting on one of the armchairs ..
Delicious food served with a smile in a cosy, relaxed atmosphere... what more could you ask for?
We have been before and the food has always been great, this time it was even better, the little things like the dressing on the salad and the veloute with the scallops made the difference. Pudding was apple-based and equally delicious with intense flavours and differing textures. Service was friendly and helpful - all in all a special Birthday meal - thanks to Frank for sorting out the candle!
Our lunch was as ever absolutely delicious and always a treat to be there. Lovely table by the fire. The flavours, fresh truffle shaved onto the soup at the table, all the little touches make it a really special meal out. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
We had our Christmas meal here last Friday, the food, wine and service were all excellent. Can not praise them enough.
Really a wonderful meal, start to finish. Best we’ve had in a long time anywhere. Flavors and cook on everything was spot on. The place is welcoming and homey, and service excellent. (If I was to get super-fussy, I’d say back off a few grains of salt.) We look forward to returning.
The Xmas dinner experience was amazing. A different, unexpected and wonderful take on the traditional Xmas turkey and the traditional Xmas pud. Thank you the R&L
