About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Fabulous food, great staff, informal atmosphere and just the right amount of attention made our evening a fabulous treat. The strawberries with balsamic jelly and basil ice cream are still my favourite dessert EVER! We will be going back next month :)
Prompt and efficient service. Good delivery of courses with lovely flavours. Enjoyed by us all and we look for ward to returning. Thank you all very much.
You should not have tables near service stations, I do not appreciate a waiter clanking about directly behind me with cutlery at the service station whilst I am dining. Other tables offered to me were unappealing, one table was too close to another with chairs almost touching each other and the other section of the restaurant with tables looked boring. My dessert of banana bread and orange blossom ice cream tasted bland and disappointing. The starter of melon and pork did not work well. Please do not charge £2 for ordinary tasting table water, that is mean, provide it free of charge. Overall the meal was too expensive and disappointing, a shame as I looked forward to dining at the restaurant for three years so there was a big build up to going.
Prix Fixe menu could have had one more option perhaps. Otherwise, splendid evening all round.
The absolute BEST lunch ever. I was being treated so I tried to give no answer to the “value for money” question as I didn’t read the bill upside down being a well-behaved person generally but my stockbroker looks forward to our annual Red Lion lunch more than any other in the year and said that it would be twice the price in London. Good vibes from all the staff who looked after us extremely well and all seem happy in their work. 3 courses apiece and all plates finished without so much as a crumb left.
Comfortable stay whilst walking the Great Stones Way. Enjoyed the wine match with the set dinner, sumptuous breakfast and well served ales
Wonderful food. It was an incredibly delicious meal. However, I object to paying for water. It’s just a little something, I know; but it puts a bitter taste in ones mouth...
Food was lovely but a bit expensive.
Food was lovely. Service excellent when we arrived but after main course we were forgotten. Left sitting with dessert menus for 20 minutes. Eventually went to bar, paid and left. Minus an offer of dessert or coffee.
Fabulous. Consistently excellent with superb food & very good service. Risotto the best I’ve ever tasted.
We had no problem finding you and found your staff welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed the food which we found interesting and considerably better than any we can find in our area of Dorset. In our visits to Cheltenham we have the Champignon of course. We wish you well for the future and hope that we can manipulate our travels to enable further meals in your charming establishment Tony H
Excellent meal. Very tasty.
Lovely stay overnight, very good food, breakfast slightly haphazard, although Frank was lovely. Would definitely return
Another wonderful lunch at The Red Lion. Exemplary cooking and lovely atmosphere. It’s just tip-top.
Although distance keeps us away more than we'd like, we love the Red Lion. Great staff, wonderful atmosphere, food to die for. We will be back for sure, hopefully sooner rather than later.
perfect, as always
Lovely room, wonderful outlook, delicious food, charming people
As on past visits, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and service, well done.
Wonderful meal as always. Impossible to find fault.
Exquisite crab tart and almond and cherry tart
We had a wonderful evening with friends visiting from Australia. Excellent meal, super service. We will be back.
Fabulous food, lovely wine and brilliant service. Wish we had come in and said hullo to Chef, we had a super time. We are only 20 minutes away and can’t believe it’s taken us this long to find you. We will be back! GG&Chris
Fabulous food as always.
great night just thought choice was a little limited , a couple of more simple dishes would have given the menu a rounder appeal .
