About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
A fantastic range of meals, with no-one finding fault in anything. Highly recommended.
Fantastic food cooked to perfection. Polite and charming service.
a great lunch in a very nice place with a very nice staff!!! We'll be back...
Excellent, first visit and it's our new favourite restaurant.
value for money
Thank you for an excellent evening
Dined here many times - always brilliant.
Very enjoyable visit. Relaxing, with friendly hosts. Lovely room (Benjamin) with idyllic scenery to the rear. Broken sink unfortunate but explained to us on arrival. Food very good indeed; we like places that dish up great food without appearing to be 'up themselves'. Also liked notices to customers that contain humour to avoid officiousness. Not much sun in the beer garden in late afternoon though; perhaps the garden could be moved, or the path of the sun altered?
The room was lovely and the setting superb. The table d'hote dinner was unimaginative, though quality ingredients. The restaurant was part of the busy local bar, and we had to tolerate a customer's dog hanging around the tables. Some diners were happy with this situation, some not. The breakfast was outstanding.
It was only our second visit, the first having been 7 months ago, but we were obviously recognised by the barman, and greeted like long lost friends. As before, the service was that delightful combination of friendliness and supreme efficiency, and the food was excellent. Unfortunately, only one real ale was available and was quite strong at 4.3% ABV, and also rather sweet for my palate. We are coming back to stay overnight on 28th June, and I am hoping that a hoppier session beer might be available, otherwise I might have to walk down to The Swan for my pre-prandial beers!
Prompt service, very pleasant staff and delicious and interesting meal.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the red lion for my husband to be's birthday treat. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.
Excellent dinner and great service. Very many thanks.
We loved the rooms with a the view over the river. We did think this was a little unkemptm but maybe due to the bad winter.
This is our fourth visit and was just as good as the previous three. Accommodation at Troutbeck never fails to please, food was superb. We'll be back!
Memorable, as always.
Great food, but the curtaining-off of the private dining area effectively means that you're dining in the bar, which can be very noisy at times (it was when we were there on (Wednesday) which is not compatible with the price point and the quality of the product offered.
Definitely a special occasion restaurant for us and the meal and service were both excellent. Very grateful to have got a table at very short notice following some great news. We look forward to returning to try the tasting menu.
Will definitely return
Excellent service. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Great food and happy to accommodate our requests.
Amazing from start to finish
The best food I've found in the Salisbury area! Nice pub atmosphere, attentive staff and superb food and drinks.
A simple looking menu but there is nothing simple about the food. Everything is well prepared from top quality ingredients. Staff are helpful and friendly. The new upstairs dining room is a great addition.
A great stay and fab food. Thanks
The Red Lion was a perfect venue for my wife's 30th birthday party. It is a stunning pub with unbelievably good food and incredibly friendly staff. We were hosted in the upstairs private function room which was a lovely room and gave a special feel to the meal. I cannot recommend the Red Lion anymore - it is certainly worth a visit. Many thanks indeed. James Kaminski
