About Red Lion Freehouse
We will of course be opening in April for outdoor dining. We will in fact be moving EVERYTHING outside. We are very fortunate to have a garden perfectly suited to it. There will be cover, there will be lighting and there will be heating!
The plan is to open on Thursday 15th April for lunch and from then on as follows:
Wednesday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Thursday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Friday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Saturday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Sunday OPEN for Lunch
The Red Lion Freehouse is a gastro country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Lovely meal again. Scallops beautifully presented; chateaubriand perfectly cooked. Washed down with some proper cider. Thanks...
Fab lunch in every way. I treated my sister to a birthday meal. She is very critical but she absolutely loved all three courses. So did I!!
Delicious Jacobs Ladder. Your wine prices are far too high. It was cold in the tent-provision of rugs would have been a good idea. The wooden benches are uncomfortable and difficult get astride. I will return!
The marquee was grander than most and a very airy place to sit. When the sun went in it was a little cool but the slightly noisy heater did sterling work. Food, as always, delicious, innovative and beautiful. Service could not be more charming, helpful, and friendly. Thank you for getting through the pandemic with such flair.
We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and attentive and professional service. It was great to see that the menu featured so much local produce.
For me, the food was slightly under your normal exceptional standard. I tried the smoked eel sausage, which i think could have done with a bit more kick (bit of a cliché, but wasabi?). As a result I missed out on the scallop ceviche, which I know to be sublime – see what I did there? – and which everyone else of course adored. The roast beef was superb, but the plate was a bit full, as were those of the pork belly chosen by others. Seems a bit churlish to complain about being given too much, I know. Last orders of the day? However: as always, a wonderful atmosphere, great service, excellent wine, and great value. We all had a fabulous time, and will be back asap. Thanks to all.
The entire meal was amazing. The carrot was however the highlight. Would definitely come back.
Beautiful pub, beautiful food and the staff are just great. will be back!
Excellent night out, shame we had to wear coats but given covid restrictions this was a great compromise enabling us to dine out. Everything I chose on the menu was superb and having left the choice of glass of white wine to the waiter that also was delicious - we will be back soon
Whilst in the marquee it would have been good to have some background music playing. Otherwise and excellent evening, thank you .
Absolutely spot on in every area. First meal out for a very long time.
Great food, well served. Highly recommended
Lovely food and service, unfortunately way too cold for being outside 🤪
We had the most delicious lunch. Slightly chilly in the marquee but the food and service certainly made me want to return very soon. The Red Lion is a real culinary treat.
I love the Red Lion and my first return since reopening demonstrated the same high standards as I have always experienced. I had the chateaubriand which was incredible and scallops starter and chocolate tart for dessert were equally delicious. Thank you so much to the team for a perfect evening. Back again in May, so see you soon!
Superb meal, fast and friendly service - but goodness, it was cold! The marquee is lovely and it all looks great but the one heater was totally inadequate - we couldn’t actually feel any warmth at all. Fortunately, the imaginative, creative and delicious food was enjoyable enough to make the cold worth putting up with, but be warned. Don’t rely on the RL heating they promise - take a blanket and gloves!
Lovely anniversary meal, we will definitely be going back x
Bit chilly in the ‘covid secure’ tent but the usual great food.
Amazing atmosphere, especially at the moment in the marquee. Lovely staff who will stop to talk and great food and drink.
Great atmosphere, great food.
Expensive food for what it is, only half decent meal was the scallops.
Brilliant lunch for my fiancé’s birthday lunch. Friendly service and great food. Also brilliant dog pub, our boys sat very happily with us and enjoyed a huge bowl of water. :)
Slightly slow, inconsistent start on service (eg two forgotten requests) BUT - such a wonderful welcome, marquee dining arrangement works really well. Crab tart as good as ever - lamb was superb as was the nettle risotto in particular. Almost worth being locked down for! But pls no more of them, on second thoughts.
We had a lovely meal with on last Friday. The marquee was great as was the food and service. I wish you evert success, you certainly deserve it. Julia
