About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
For all four of us this was our first experience of dining at the Red Lion, and on all counts it lived up to our expectations. The food merits the accolades it has received, the service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere relaxed, and coupled with our stay at the outstanding Troutbeck Guest House it was a real treat - one we have all resolved to repeat.
What a treat, lovely place, great food, friendly staff and Leffe on draft !
This was our first visit having read excellent reviews in The Good Pub Guide. All four of us thought the garden setting to be perfect, the food and wine outstanding and the service from start to finish worthy of several return visits! Indeed, we have already suggested your fine establishment to two other couples who will be seeing you soon. Every dish from your full menu was an absolute delight. Perfect portion-sizes, great taste and served in a relaxed manner but with admirable style and efficiency .An outstanding meal in a beautiful country setting. Thank you!
The waiter was efficient but he could have been more engaging; he had an air of indifference. Otherwise superb.
Posh mosh without all the pomp and ceremony. A delicious Sunday treat for the whole family.
Great food as always. I have visited a few times now and every dish I have ever had is absolutely gorgeous.
Another absolutely fantastic meal at the Red Lion Freehouse. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. This is our place to go when out for a celebration.
Great food & service as always
Great food and service all delivered in a friendly and efficient way, despite being quite with a large party.
Food was fabulous.
Our food and service was excellent
Excellent, as usual.
Outstanding food and faultless service, in a easy-going and relaxed atmosphere - a perfect combination. Thank you.
What a gem. Loved the food and the chocolate pound cake was to die for
It was all great. All 8 of us thought the food excellent.
Really enjoyed - thank you
Brilliant. We only dined with you once last year having previously had a good experience and we were not so happy so it was great to find the team back on top form. Thank you -we will be back
A reasonably good visit. They had a new staff member who wasn't quite up to speed and had to be prompted for side plates, bread etc but I guess we all have to learn sometime. Food was good as usual although chunky chips were not as I remembered them, we had 3 large ones previously, whereas this time we had 6 - 8 less chunky, from my perspective next time quality over quantity please.
My friends and I meet for lunch every couple of months in Hampshire, Wiltshire or Dorset. As the Red Lion is so well regarded by its patrons I was, frankIy, disappointed. But I was personally a little off colour last week so I have forwarded your message to them, lest I have been unjustifiably unkind in my verdicts.
We had a great evening with delicious food. The lamb was wonderfully tender and the salmon, which can sometimes be a little dull was very inventive with a lovely green “salsa” with fabulous a citrus tang. The warm cocoa pound cake defies description it was so good. It was a busy Thursday night and although service was good, it had to be managed in terms of staggering orders to the kitchen - the only longish wait was before our dessert, but considering everything is freshly cooked and delicious it was worth it.We will be back.
A fantastic pub in a beautiful location. We had a brilliant meal as part of a family celebration in the private dining room. Great space with a wonderful atmosphere. All 11 guests were blown away by the quality of the food, whilst also being very well looked after by the attentive staff- we’ll definitely be visiting again!!
Lovely, as it always is
Excellent food, quality ingredients cooked perfectly.
We had a lovely overnight stay & stunning dinner at the Red Lion Freehouse. The greatest attention was paid to the smallest detail, and I will be recommending it to anyone who will listen. We will definitely be back!
