About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
We left a form when checking put.
Recommended here by a friend and it didn't disappoint. We loved the mussels and the rib of beef!
A wonderful evening. Thank you all so much!
Sadly, we felt our meal on Saturday was overpriced and underexciting. Added to this, the lighting was so low that I didn't see till I used my phone torch that my cauliflower dish was bright yellow - it looked a muddy brown, and I'm sure that affected the taste, which seemed muddled. The genoise in the cafe gourmand was particularly disappointing - dry sponge, with a woody chunk of pomelo and blob of compote - though the raspberry quenelle was very good indeed and the other elements were fine. My husband's grouse was OK, but no more than that, and for over £30 in a pub, it should have been wonderful. Crab tart was good, though clearly reheated, and the chicken liver pate was fine but unexceptional. Service was swift and efficient and staff were pleasant. But we are unlikely to return or recommend - £150 for two should have given us a really good meal, but I'm afraid it was really quite ordinary.
The whole experience has been wonderful. The staff are friendly and very welcoming, especially having a baby with us. The food has been outstanding, exceeded our expectations!
A lovely evening in a friendly atmosphere, with great food.
Had been nervous about trying the broccoli soup with mussels and furikake but it was delicious and likewise the sage ice cream that accompanied the caramelised apple and candied walnuts was delicate and delightful. Hope we can return soon. .
Food is consistently excellent with the menu frequently evolving with innovative choices to reflect seasonal produce. Service is good but moreion te casual side - no silver service here!
Absolutely fantastic meal in a beautiful setting. Loved it.
Food and service were both incredible. Couldn’t fault a thing.
The service which was excellent was nice and relaxed without being too in your face. Definitions such as “choucroute” as well as the interesting food combinations were easily explained. Above all this is no ordinary dog friendly pub - the menu itself definitely warrants the the Michelin star! Whilst it’s not your typical pub I thought the quality of the food was excellent value.
Amazing as always, can’t recommend highly enough!
Our 4th stay at The Red Lion in the course of about 6 years. Lovely rooms and great food with well trained people looking after you in a beautiful environment. What more could you want.
What a treat this turned out to be! This was our second visit to the Red Lion and like the first everything exceeded our expectations. Great flavoursome and memorable food complemented by the superb paired wines. Already looking forward to our next visit!
Excellent all round, priced as you would expect from that.
Expensive but worth every penny!
As always a delicious Sunday lunch in relaxed surroundings with very good service.
Exceptional food and service. A great way to spend a Sunday.
Fantastic meal. Really can not fault any aspect of our evening. Would recommend to everyone. Jamie was superb and has the best customer service I have experienced in a long time.
We had a really lovely evening. Food amazing as always. First time we have stayed over and the accommodation was superb. Very luxurious and comfortable with fantastic views. Thanks to all.
The food was very well thought out, presented perfectly and tasted amazing. The new things they tried all worked well and it didn’t feel gimmicky. The service could be sharpened up a little bit but everyone was very welcoming.
Food was excellent. Chester was very helpful and dinner service was prompt and good.
Great food and great service from Martin,Jamie and Chester.
