About Red Lion Freehouse
The Red Lion Freehouse is a Michelin starred country pub with rooms.
Reopen from 4th july
5th July a la carrte menu only, no Sunday Lunch roasts.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
fantastic meal atmosphere hard as we ate early and covid
Another Excellent stay
We absolutely loved The Red Lion - it was our very first visit - it was very special - and we will definitely come back. It's great to find a new (for us) restaurant with such high standards and only a 30= minute drive away from us in Marlborough. My only small comment/complaint is that 4 coffees which we did not have were added to our bill - but I know this was a simple error and when I noticed it - it was corrected. We will be booking with you again soon.
The Red Lion is a wonderful pub/restaurant in a gorgeous country setting. For the quality of the food, it is reasonably priced, and the staff are extremely accommodating. Sometimes at a michelin star establishment, you can feel slightly intimidated - not at the Red Lion. A friendly, welcoming atmosphere, you will feel as much as home here in wellies and jeans as you would in an evening dress and heels. The food was delicious, I really couldn't fault it - and the kitchen were great at working around my pregnancy dietary requirements. Sadly I am moving out of the area soon, but will definitely be rebooking when we come back and visit. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area!
Good Food. Great Service. Not sure why they have to charge for a bottle of table water that probably came straight from the tap though. No complaints on the cost as the menu available online, but it is expensive for a pub especially with service charge added. Biggest worry was the proximity of other clients, despite being back to back ~600mm to another person is not what I would call socially distanced, I have been to many eating establishments during Covid and any with people this close together have added barriers or removed tables to keep a 2m distance.
Sorry to see Sunday lunch closure. Table settings very basic for price of meal
It was a great meal; slightly marred by the table next to us being slight ‘lubricated’ but not enough to downgrade the effort from the Red Lion team. ’
Our meal was excellent as usual
Superb food and wine, outstanding service and great environment thank you
Fabulous evening with delicious food and attentive friendly staff
Excellent food - great service - 5 star!
What a gem!
My wife’s starter scallop, home made black pudding quails egg and onion purée was wonderful and I had the best bit of pork belly ever as a main. Great wine list too
Excellent breakfast. The eggs benedict royale were perfect. Home made hollandaise and muffin with their cured ham too
Really loved our dining experience at the red lion for our 3 nights stay, every night was a different experience which was amazing. We had the prix fixed first night included in the bed, breakfast and dinner price, this was outstanding value for money, the food was absolutely delicious as well as the service! The second night we went a la carte and had the chateaubriand which was truly outstanding, they even whipped up a fresh mayonnaise when asked. On our final night we went for the tasting menu and wine pairing, such a fun and exciting experience, Jamie was knowledgable about all the food and wine. The food was excellent every night and we couldn’t recommend it enough!!
Marvellous; I haven't eaten this well since I lived in France. I'm particularly impressed by the way you reacted to the COVID challenge, offering take away and the bakery. Thankyou for all that you do.
Yet again a sensational meal and service. Had the tasting menu for a change and wow every course delicious. Asked for a couple of wines that would split the courses and they worked perfectly. Thank you for an awesome night.
That crab was amazing!!!
All round a very enjoyable lunch experience.
Delicious food, wonderful service, a hidden gem of a pub.
4 stars for value due to expensive wine list, otherwise a great lunch and service was excellent.
Never disappoints!! Many thanks
Excellent lunch, everything was superb.
.Servers attitude poor apart from the young lady that served us, service was slow. Dinner was average apart from the excellent starter but the breakfast I sent back without any comment from the staff. We were asked for the meal choice and time the previous evening but the ‘full english’ served looked like it had sat for hours.
Excellent food and staff who made dining in these most unusual times feel very comfortable and safe.
