About Red Lion Freehouse
We will of course be opening in April for outdoor dining. We will in fact be moving EVERYTHING outside. We are very fortunate to have a garden perfectly suited to it. There will be cover, there will be lighting and there will be heating!
The plan is to open on Thursday 15th April for lunch and from then on as follows:
Wednesday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Thursday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Friday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Saturday OPEN for Lunch and Dinner
Sunday OPEN for Lunch
The Red Lion Freehouse is a gastro country pub with rooms.
Eating out should be a special experience and we’d like each guest to feel that way. We hope we can make you feel like being at the pub is a special occasion in itself each time you visit. Food is about flavour. This is why our menus are written for each service, each day and are ingredient led. Our philosophy is to let the ingredients shine and use skill and technique to serve delicious, seemingly simple food. Team RL believes in a strong principle - for us it’s either local or it’s the best. Often, it pleasantly turns out to be both. We feel passionately about supporting local producers but equally excited about sourcing very special items from the area that does them best. We also welcome the challenge of producing as much as possible in-house, specifically things that people take for granted, like butter or ketchup, and are over-enthusiastic - some might say obsessive - about researching recipes and methods that best lend themselves to the task at hand. So come on down to the Red Lion. See you soon.
Service unprofessional - waiter poured red wine into my wine glass splashed into my water glass he never cleared it up. One would expect silver service but can’t say this was anywhere near. We also never received Yorkshire puddings when I emailed I was told I should have said at the time, by the time we’d seen other people’s dinners which had them we had ours! We won’t use this restaurant again not worth it
Trying times, however the Red Lion excels as always. The rules may now require outdoor dining and these guys make it an event in itself with a superbly atmospheric marquee being the result of necessarily decamping from the pub. The food continues to be exemplary and the whole lunch made April 2021 the re-emergence from lockdown we all should deserve. Well done, and much appreciated.
We were very pleased with the food, drink and service and found the atmosphere in the marquee to be extremely cosy and inviting. The only sticking point was the price point, which we found a bit expensive.
Sunday lunch on the 18th April was amazing.
Always a pleasure to visit the Red Lion for superb food & service (so sad the bakery on Sunday is no more).
We had a lovely Sunday lunch and the outside dining space is great. My only surprise was no Yorkshire Pudding with the roast beef? Did not get to bottom of if not included or kitchen forgot to put on the plates! Had a lovely meal and will be back!
Lovely experience! So excited to be able to come back and dine with you. Thank you!
Never fails to impress - the scallop cervice was my fave, the lemon sauce was just genius, my Partner said the turbot is “one of the best dishes he’s had in years.” Great staff with good knowledge and good advice - always remember to take it! The chickpea side with the turbot complimented it! The staff recommendations are reliable and trustworthy.
The food at the red lion is always excellent and yesterdays lunch was no exception . Great to be going out again .
It was cold in marquee. Heaters didn’t do much.
Great food, service and atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first Dinner out since lockdown. We were all very cold which I expected and although we had coats on I should have wrapped up warmer! Excellent food and a fabulous evening out
Great food as always, the garden building is a brave effort to serve food and comply with the regulations as they are as of Mid April, but it cannot be the same as sitting in the bar. as normal. I look forward to returning when we can sit inside!
Lovely food, very attentive service! Chapeau for the lovely outside area with carpet in the tent. We were well impressed! The ceviche of scallops was amazing, wish I had more! :)
Outstanding lunch. The kitchen was at the top of its game. The four of us were extremely pleased with all the courses of our meals. A brilliant occasion, well suited to the first eating out after easing of lockdown.
Excellent... as always!
Takeaway , so couldn't, sadly, enjoy the atmosphere.
The staff were friendly and helpful, it didn't seem terribly organised and some other people across from us were complaining but we personally had a great experience with complimentary starters, delicious chateaubriand and wine. Would definitely come back, did think the other dishes on the menu were a bit overpriced compared to the chateaubriand....
We had a lovely pre tier 3 meal with you and hope you are able to keep going ok until things improve. We will be back as soon as we can and thank you to you all. Digby
Superb menu - everyone had delicious food. Thank you for offering a fantastic alternative for our vegetarians! We throughly enjoyed ourselves and the Pisco Sour was amazing too!
We had an amazing lunch yesterday at The Red Lion and we can’t wait to come again!! The service was outstanding. Also coming to the bakery on Sunday :)
A truly amazing place to come and eat. Quality local produce with a wide selection that will keep everyone happy. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend the Chateaubriand.
Just wonderful and we had the perfect Boxing Day thanks to you!!! Can’t wait to come back (also your bakery is just amazing!!)
A lovely start to Christmas
Despite having booked a table for 3 over a month earlier, it was somewhat disappointing to be ushered to a small table set for 2 on arrival - in an unoccupied part of the restaurant. Then the waiter proposed setting or squeezing another place setting on to the small table - which was very obviously not suitable for 3 - unless for 3 small children. The total lack of welcome or any form of acknowledgement by the lady behind the bar was surprising. The same lady took several requests via the waiter before she relented and gave him permission to allow us to sit at one of 2 tables already set for three. Was very close to leaving at that stage. Food was tasty if somewhat sparse on the plate. No atmosphere and could have done with another 4/5 degrees on the thermostat. Got the impression of staff not overly happy in their role. Our least enjoyable Christmas Eve dinner anywhere during the past 10 years. Plus the allegedly discretionary 12.5% service charge included on the bill. Very disappointing overall - and not even a very busy service.
Dear Mr Minnis, Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry that you were disappointed with your experience of the Red Lion. Best wishes, Guy Manning
