Wellllll, quite frankly we’re a little bored of salads and couscous. What’s wrong with the good old blighty Pie and mash with a pint of real ale sat 'round a log fire with your nearest and dearest? Things are all too often forgotten…
So, we decided to take a grand old building down the Newcastle Quayside that had bags of natural character and give it some tender loving care, stoke the fires and stock up for the winter with great ales and Handmade quality pies. Pretty simple really - we’re not complicated chaps, we just care for great food, beer and banter.
I’m a regular at Hop and Cleaver, and decided to take my partner there for dinner on 31.12, as he was up from London and said he fancied ‘some decent and dirty food.’ Upon arrival we were shown to our table, which was in very close proximity to another pair of diners. This was not a surprise at all and I understand this is the layout of the restaurant, however, it was particularly quiet and it seemed unnecessary to sit so close. We asked to move on two separate occasions, for this reason and the fact our table was particularly ‘wobbly’ only to be advised all tables were reserved at some point that evening. It seemed to completely baffle the waitress when I suggested we would only be dining for a short space of time and it was likely we would be done before other diners arrived, but alas, we were forbidden from moving. Our drinks orders were then taken. We ordered two cocktails each as part of the BOGOF, and they sadly took a very long time to arrive. Once we had our drinks it then took a further 15 mins for our food order to be taken, despite advising we had chosen what we would like to eat. Upon ordering, it took 60 mins for our food to arrive, again, I empasise the fact the place was particularly quiet and there seemed to be a good amount of staff on, so we were confused and disappointed that we waited so long. When the good did arrive it was beautiful and it could not be faulted in any way, it’s just a particular shame that on this occasion the lead up to the meal was particulatly disappointing.
Food was fantastic. Staff were very friendly and happy to help. The cocktails were amazing.
Fight broke out next to us, can’t be helped but our dinner table was right next to the bar. Enjoyed the food and drink.
Excellent all round as always
First time I’ve been here and will certainly be returning. Great value and lovely food. The waiter with the longer hair also very good at his job. Very happy in his work.
Good venue for group bookings - attentive service and consistent quality.
Food was awful, covered in salt. The pulled pork had so much pepper on that it was ineadable. Smoked sausage had the texture and taste of a wet sponge. Waiting staff were dismissive of our comments when we complained - she even said thank you when we told her that the food was awful. Never coming back!!
Service was very slow. Maybe not enough staff?
Great service from friendly staff. Excellent quality of food and drinks. Vibrant and buzzing atmosphere.
Lovely food and cocktails, lovely, welcoming, friendly staff. A good night had by whole party of 10
Will definitely return
All amazing food! Go a lot for wing Wednesday never disappoints
Only problem was that the music was very loud and hard to hear each other during the conversation. However everything else was lovely! The wings were perfect and great value for money! Would definitely return.
Very very good
Great place, great staff, thank you!
Lovely pies and excellent service
Very good all round
I've eaten here a few times now and every time the food has been phenomenal!
Great food, great atmosphere! Couldn’t fault it, will definitely be there again!
Love wing Wednesday
Food was good as always. Service didn’t quite live up to standards. Got fed up with trying to order second round of drinks whilst at table and ended up having to go to the bar myself to get them.
I only really went there for the ultimate cheese dog and was upset when I got there to find you don’t do it anymore
We booked the Hop and Cleaver for a birthday meal and drinks with a large group of friends. The atmosphere, food and service was fab! We were seated in the tap room which was perfect for the occasion. Highly recommend!
