About Queen's Head Askham
A pub with a difference in the heart of Askham
Part of the esteemed Askham Collection, The Queen’s Head is a cosy 17th century village pub with bedrooms ideally located in the pretty village of Askham in the Lake District.
Lovingly renovated to the Askham Hall standard by the Lowther family, discover seasonal ‘super-posh’ pub food made with produce reared, foraged and grown on our farms, hedgerows and kitchen gardens. Think earthy truffle with creamy artichoke; deep-flavoured seasonal game and home-reared saddleback pork; hand-dived scallops and local lobster; brassicas, herby pestos, berries and orchard fruits.
Make the most of the location with an invigorating walk on the local fells, or a more gently stroll along the river Lowther right from the door, with no need to drive anywhere during your stay. Back at the pub enjoy a local pint by the copper topped bar before a refined yet hearty dinner. The regularly-changing menu is matched by a wonderful selection of wines courtesy of the sommeliers from our Michelin-starred sister hotel, Askham Hall, just a short walk away. Make the most of this special relationship and eat at both places during your stay..
Today the QH is headed up by landlady Mel, who grew up in Askham. In the kitchen is Gareth Webster, an exceptional talent who led the award-winning team at the George and Dragon, Clifton for 3 years for the Lowther family and prior to that worked with Simon Rogan.
Open Thursday to Sunday from 6pm – 10pm. Booking essential, with just 9 tables and 7 bedrooms, this is ‘posh’ country pub perfection.
All the staff were excellent in accommodating us and our 8 month old daughter. Thank you
Lovely meal in pleasant surroundings with friendly staff
Very high quality food - top notch ingredients presented with real flair. Great service too and a superb wine list.
Made to feel very welcome, friendly staff and superb food, flavoursome and well presented.
Fighting back against COVID. Tough masked times but still managed a welcoming friendly ambience and great food and wine. And a great centre for activities to work up an appetite. We'll be back.
The food was extremely good and the service was first class. Melanie, Louise and Lynsey were very attentive and made the evening most enjoyable. The only slight criticism was the beef three ways was a tad over facing for me but, some people would see this as a positive. Would definitely book again and recommend the Queen’s Head to others. Beautiful food and wonderful service. Thoroughly nice evening
Staff are very attentive and friendly, food was amazing! Really enjoyable evening.
A first class gastro pub in a beautiful village location
Delicious meal and very friendly service in a lovely old pub.
Excellent meal cost atmosphere and excellent service
I was a little disappointed that although we'd stated on booking that we did not eat meat we were presented with snacks which included chicken wings we said there must be a mistake and we did not eat meat so could they change the snacks. We did not receive alternative snacks and when we were served our starter I said that we had not received the pre dinner snacks and was told the bread was coming.. I believe that would have been served anyway. This is a small issue which needs sorted and I think was just miscommunication, however I would say all the food we ate was well cooked fresh and I would definitely eat here again.
The food was excellent as were the staff. Highly recommend!
Best pub grub ever
Fantastic friendly service and absolutely delicious food. The scallop I had was divine as was the beef. Thank you to all concerned.
We were so impressed with the whole evening! Food and service were first class!
I thought the meal and staff were superb. The best UK meal I've had in a long time. The only thing that put me off a little was the wine salesman. I would prefer to deal with the bar staff and know what I'm buying and the price. I would book again if that was possible.
A previous diner I met on entering said "you're in for a treat". She was right. I was expecting good pub grub but this was definitely more. Food, wine and service all top notch Congratulations too on getting the Covid balance right. Some pubs and restaurants do not seem to understand that no-one wants to have an evening out in a hospital ward.
Fabulous night. One of best meals I have had in a long time. The wine pairing was a delight as was Josh. The set up we thought worked fantastically!
