About Playfair's Restaurant and Steakhouse
Playfair’s Restaurant and Steakhouse is a family run business with son Duncan McLachlan as Head Chef leading the team known as ‘Playfair’s Army’ in the kitchen and front of house in the restaurant. With some of the best produce in the world, Playfair’s chooses to use Scottish ingredients where possible such as local Fife beef from local artisan butcher Stuart Minick, and seafood from St Monans based,David Lowrie. In fact, Playfair’s is so dedicated to using Scottish products they have been awarded with the Visit Scotland ‘Taste Our Best’ award, which is only given to restaurants who have a minimum of 40% of dishes on their menus using Scottish ingredients. There is a wide variety to choose from, such as, steaks cooked perfectly on the chargrill, poached Shetland haddock with Welsh rarebit or classics such as stovies with Black Isle beef or haggis, neeps and tatties! And don’t forget to leave room for dessert made in house by the Playfair’s Army including Irn Bru crème brûlée, sticky toffee pudding and clootie dumpling.
First class food and service - cannot fault Playfair's at all.
Group of 14 and empty plates all round. Excellent meal!
Good food and good atmosphere!
Interesting and comprehensive menu
The food was great, and although there were tiny things we could mention, everything was tasty and well presented. I would prefer a wider selection of wine to choose from, but the overall result of our first visit in years is that Playfair's has immediately gone to the top of the list of places we'll eat at in the centre of St Andrews.
I came here with a big group of family and friends and were very very happy with the service, food and drinks. Our only disappointment was the portion sizes which were very small but quite pricey and the brûlée dessert was not terribly nice. I think a traditional creme brûlée would be much more appealing. Thanks for an enjoyable evening.
A good spot for a special meal.
Fantastic menu & service spot on
The service was exceptional, with staff being polite, friendly and very attentive. The atmosphere was great, as was the food. The quality of the dishes was exceptionally high, and the range of dishes available was outstanding. This was my graduation meal and I couldn't have hoped for a better experience. I would definitely recommend Playfair's Restaurant to anyone looking for a high quality meal out in St Andrews.
By far, my favourite restaurant in St. Andrews. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great and the staff was great! They did everything to accommodate us and make sure everything was going well. I really enjoyed celebrating my graduation here. Thank you for all your services.
Great menu with plenty of choice. Food was delicious and portions generous. Very attentive staff.
Wonderful food and great service.Even when reall busy then still manage to come around and check if everything is OK.
A lovely meal. Would definitely recommend.
We had dinner here while staying at the Fairmont. The service and food was fat higher than the Fairmont. Enough said. :-)
Hands down the best restaurant in St Andrews
Slow service, overpriced food but otherwise a nice evening.
The food was excellent and it was certainly a lively atmosphere. Not the best venue for a quiet intimate dinner. The restaurant was busy but we did feel a little abandoned during the middle part of our meal. Staff did seem stretched with more important things on their mind.
Food was absolutely 1st class and the staff could not do enough to help up out - always very courteous.
St Andrews = golf + men + group = noisy ...
Brilliant experience from the moment we arrived. Cheery staff and great atmosphere in the restaurant. Steaks were all precisely as ordered and full of flavour. So good to experience hospitality as it should be in Scotland, and thank you to the staff for making our visit memorable.
Food very good, staff very attentive and atmosphere very intimate.
Good restaurant with nice a atmosphere
A little surprised to pay £3.50 for a pint of Best then £3.30 for a large Diet Coke. Apart from that I must add the food was great and it was a warm cosy restaurant, not too big but fully booked. Definitely be back.
Menu fantastic and lots of choice. Food very good and atmosphere nice and relaxed. Will be going again.
A superb meal served by most professional and attentive staff. A 5 star rating in every aspect of dining out. Playfair's is now our favourite restaurant in St Andrews. Gordon & Marion
