About Penny Blue
Our beautiful bar & restaurant is housed within Carlisle’s historic old Post Office building. Sympathetically restored with many original features giving wonderful character and atmosphere. The Penny Blue building contains the famous stained glass window from the old Lonsdale cinema which has been restored and can be seen in our more private area.
Penny Blue will be serving a modern tapas & grill menu from our open kitchen, using local ingredients where possible and 100% Cumbrian beef. We cater for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Our drinks list includes original and classic cocktails, an extensive spirit menu, gin bar and a handpicked wine list.
Our only recommendation would be not to use brioche buns for savoury fillings, as they are too sweet. Sweet and savoury together does not work for us.
Fantastic Sunday lunch, this is my fourth visit for food and always had good food.
Very Happy good was amazing will definitely be back
Excellent service, food and drink as always. Thank you.
We had afternoon tea booked for two of us. The service was quick, friendly and brilliant. The restaurant is lovely. The food was so delicious and the selection was amazing. We were just sad that we couldn't finish it all. I have food allergies and the staff were amazing about this. We had an amazing time. Thank you
We thoroughly enjoyed our "girly" afternoon tea (for 5 people) at Penny Blue. We were very pleased that you were able to add one more afternoon tea at short notice. The food was delicious & well presented. I would definitely recommend the Prosecco Afternoon Tea. The service was very prompt with an enjoyable atmosphere. We will definitely return.
Good Gin menu. Very good À la carte menu, the steak was excellent. Very pleasant service.
Lovely atmosphere. Quality food. Coffee was a little slow in arriving but only a minor point! Would definitely recommend.
First time eaying here absolutely gorgeous im gluten free so there were loads of choices which is sometimes really rare. The food was beautiful and nothing was too much trouble i will definately return
very disappointed.table not ready on arrival .3 or 4 of our partys chips were raw and under cooked.told the waiter but got no response.ordered desert cocktail waited 15 mins still didn't get it .kept getting told it was because they were busy but the other dining area was empty and surely diners should get priority over walk in drinkers,so we cancelled that.
Great atmosphere, busy, staff great, only downside was background music which was a bit annoying and loud when people are having a meal and a catch-up.
10 out of 10 spot on.
Fantastic atmosphere with great staff who were very friendly, food was amazing a 10 out of 10 everything was perfectly cool and well presented. Will definitely be returning.
Brilliant tasty food served by very attentive friendly staff.
Fantastic evening. Lovely food!
Really enjoyed our visit
Loved the food and will definitely be back!
it took 50 minutes to receive a cold/uncooked starter then just as we had finished the waitress came and told us our mains were ready, not what i had anticipated from a leisurely lunch at 3pm when the restaurant was not overly busy
The service was poor. The order was wrong even though we repeated it twice. It was difficult to hold a conversation as the music was too loud. When the food did arrive it was lukewarm. I would only recommend Penny Blue as somewhere to call in for a drink not for a sociable evening out with the girls.
Excellent service and friendly, helpful staff.
Lovely place and atmosphere for either just a catch up or a special occasion!
It’s very loud so as a couple put together conversation is difficult We had to ask 3 tines for our wine and had already started main course which was a shame
