About Penny Blue
Our beautiful bar & restaurant is housed within Carlisle’s historic old Post Office building. Sympathetically restored with many original features giving wonderful character and atmosphere. The Penny Blue building contains the famous stained glass window from the old Lonsdale cinema which has been restored and can be seen in our more private area.
Penny Blue will be serving a modern tapas & grill menu from our open kitchen, using local ingredients where possible and 100% Cumbrian beef. We cater for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Our drinks list includes original and classic cocktails, an extensive spirit menu, gin bar and a handpicked wine list.
If the date or time you requested is not available, please contact the restaurant on 01228210241.
Able to book reservation online easily; quick and efficient. Shown to our seat on arrival. Lovely food and atmosphere. Totally recommend.
The food was beautiful, loved it!
I booked for a large party of 12 and couldn’t fault the service or quality of food. Everything came out at the same time and was hot, Food was beautiful and everyone’s order was correct. This was my first time at Penny Blue but I will definitely be coming back.
Lovely menu. Compliments to the chef! I'll be back!
On Saturday we were a last minute booking.. the staff were very accommodating & the service and food was excellent. We were also staying the night at The Halston and that also was superb with breakfast in Penny Blue the following morning also first class!.. highly recommend both!
Another lovely evening at Penny Blue
The background music was quite annoying with booming repetitive base blasting during the meal.
Gorgeous food friendly staff highly recommended
Was disappointed with the service, thought trip advisor reviews were possibly exaggerated but they are not. On arrival we were seated straight away even though we were early which was good, staff were nice but were very slow at taking our orders and serving drinks. It took 25 minutes after taking our main dishes away and asking for dessert menu and drinks, and me getting up to ask again for menu and drinks, for a waitress to come and get our orders. Dining area was very noisy, it was full of people standing having drinks..tables reserved nearby were left empty for 2 hours or more when they could have been used. Dessert of apple and pear crumble and custard was lovely, but 1/2 an inch of custard in an already small jug was not enough. We spent £80 whilst there, we would have probably had another couple of drinks had the staff been more attentive. Very disappointed with spending all that money on what was a special occasion.
Great evening. Would definitely be back.
Great food, nice people and atmosphere but because it was busy our drinks were forgotten about a few times.
Fabulous food plus great service in a warm cozy space, what more could you ask for?
Excellent again. Thanks for our usual table 😃. Will be returning soon.
Nice surroundings. Just the right amount for afternoon tea. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Good service.
Fantastic service and great food! There were 16 of us and all food arrived on time at the same time-impressive! Thank you !
Really loved the ‘new style’ Chicken Katsu curry, it was good before but now terrific. Thank you for giving us our requested table.
The beef in the sandwich was to rare for me and apparently was a bit chewy
Second time here, this time for Husbands birthday and was lovely. Food was perfectly cooked and really tasty. Penny Blue has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere with lovely staff and a brilliant drinks menu I loved my Mocktail will defiant be visiting again.
Enjoyable eveni ng staff were attentive but not over the top Food was excellent atmosphere enjoyable
Not too impressed with the choice of starters (but that's just me). The food I had was all fine and I will be returning :-)
Our group on Saturday really enjoyed our starters but were all disappointed with our main courses. It was a shame as my cousins were visiting from Malaga and Manchester and are big foodies, they’d picked your menu over others when deciding where to book and the main was definitely a let down. The pulled chicken burger was not pulled chicken, the lamb and Katsu curry chicken were over cooked and the fish dish was quite bland
Food menu limited as New Years Day,but nicely cooked and presented. Always a nice atmosphere in bar and restaurant.
Cosy restaurant with attentive staff. Food was very good, would return again.
Couldn’t fault anything. Excellent
