About Penny Blue
Our beautiful bar & restaurant is housed within Carlisle’s historic old Post Office building. Sympathetically restored with many original features giving wonderful character and atmosphere. The Penny Blue building contains the famous stained glass window from the old Lonsdale cinema which has been restored and can be seen in our more private area.
Penny Blue will be serving a modern tapas & grill menu from our open kitchen, using local ingredients where possible and 100% Cumbrian beef. We cater for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Our drinks list includes original and classic cocktails, an extensive spirit menu, gin bar and a handpicked wine list.
Our second visit here on our annual trip to Carlisle. Stunning restaurant/bar, great food & drink and excellent service. Thanks.
Menu has changed since my last visit and would welcome more mixed tapas platters
A little too pricey for what you got, when you only get 1 glass of prosecco. There was so many cakes compared to the sandwiches. Then having to pay for 2 people that last minute couldn't make it, so cost the rest of us £46 on top when they had already paid their deposit. So then what is a depositl for?
Best afternoon tea we’ve had, will be back!!
My friend and I were in for lunch, the first time either of us had been to Penny Blue. The food was delicious (both had mushroom stroganoff) and the cocktails were equally delicious. The service was excellent with the waiters being attentive but not intrusive. The decor of the restaurant is lovely. We will go again.
Had to cancel on this occasion but have been on numerous others always wonderful
Food was excellent & the dessert choice has improved since last visit. Really enjoyed it thank you
This was our first visit to The Halston Pennyblue. The refurbishment from the old General PO to the Halston is excellent.Unfortunately the evening went down hill from here. Despite booking several weeks in advance,we were in the main bar area, not in the restaurant area, it was very noisy, indeed difficult to have a conversation. One party member had to send food back as it was cold on arrival. To the staffs credit it was taken away and replacement arrived quickly, unfortunately it wasn’t that much better. Whilst the other food was ok we were not blown away by the food. Not sure i will be returning anytime soon.
Food was good although a little pricey for what it was -afternoon tea. Felt sorry for waiting staff who were excellent and cery attentive but rushed off their feet.
Really enjoyed Great food and even better atmosphere
The male waiter was second to none absolutely fantastic.
Oh my, your new menu is AMAZING!!! roasted cauli salad a revelation and sweet potato fritters absolutely delicious! Coupled with brilliant front of house staff. Thanks for a delicious dinner as usual.
Love Penny Blue. Have eaten here lots of times. A little gutted the tapas set meals have disappeared from the menu. This, in my opinion is what set PB above other restaurants. Yes you can still order tapas but they are nowhere near the calibre of previous menus. Plus if I ordered 3 choices I’m looking at £20+ per meal. Shame. Food is so lovely.
Afternoon Tea excellent, would highly recommend a visit
Food was excellent and everyone enjoyed it. Thank you
Music quite noisy, which combined with everyone wanting to chat, made it very noisy. Meat tapas was lovely, however spoilt by being served on a wooden board. A nice white plate would have made it more appealing and then you could at least move your food from the bowls to the plate and add your side dishes too.
The food and drink was great but the service wasn’t the best. We had ordered Prosecco afternoon tea and after our food had came I mentioned we had ordered Prosecco afternoon tea as I thought they had maybe forgotten as we hadn’t been given it so asked when we would get the Prosecco and was told we’d get it when we ask for it. We were also never offered any tea or coffee which we presumed would be part of the package. 3 of our party left earlier so they paid then 3 of us stayed a bit later so when we came to pay the girl asked what we were paying for. I said could we just split the remainder of the bill between the 3 of us. We were told the till was complicated so could we say everything we needed to pay for! We were honest and when we came to pay we thought it seemed quite cheap but thought nothing of it. After we left we checked the receipt and had been given a £15 discount then a £22.70 discount so no idea where that came from! We really enjoyed the food and drinks and the setting is great but I feel like the service doesn’t reflect this which is a shame, we would definitely return but I think this could put some people off to return in the future.
Steak night hard to beat. Delicious food, great atmosphere and spot on service. Cheers
Love Penny Blue, beautiful setting with amazing food. Prices are on the high side for both food and drink but the service is brilliant. Great venue for Carlsile
Lovely evening, no complaints about the food / service at all. Will be back
