Origins have crafted a menu that offers relaxed social dining in the comfortable surrounds of a modern kitchen-focused restaurant. Whether it is tapas, natural wines and craft beer or a full sit-down dining experience you're after, you'll find it at Origins.
At Origins Small Plates pays tribute to the social act of sharing. Shoots, Stems & Leaves takes inspiration from the earth; local, seasonal produce delivered as complex, delicious salads. Our mains and sides are Hunted and Gathered; each ingredient reflecting our surroundings. Desserts with local flavour bring The Sweetness, and artisanal Cheeses of the Region round out the menu.
Our ‘Chef's Blackboard' will introduce at least 3 new daily dishes to reflect the season, and allow us to champion the exciting fresh produce we find.
Review by tourist from Japan with an experience in food industry. Visited for a dinner. Food was good but not inspiring. Tuna was slightly overcooked. Trout needed an accent in source. Maybe a good place to have sundowner owing to good atmosphere and service.

Origins Restaurant at The Marine Hotel Hermanus has always been on our radar as a place to visit but until this past weekend we have never managed to visit. I am so happy we finally have set that right. The town was nothing I expected, but everything about it I loved. There are so many places to visit and things to do and seeped in its majesty was the Grand Old Dame The Marine Hotel. We arrived earlier and explored some of Hermanus and were already picking out the restaurants we wanted to visit on our next Hermanus trip. But back to The Marine Hotel and Origins Restaurant, the views are exquisite, you have a full view of the entire Bay, one can only imagine what whale season would be like. Its always lovely to see a familiar face on ones first visit to any establishment and Hayley and the rest of the team made us feel nothing but warmly welcomed. Restaurant Week Menu 2 Course Lunch (starter/main or main/dessert) R350 p.p. Starter Fragrant Steamed Mussels - ginger, lemongrass, coconut cream or Charred Springbok Tataki - young carrots, pickled mushrooms, raspberry Main Kudu Loin - creamy parmesan risotto, wild mushrooms, pearl onions, red cabbage & sultana chutney or Walker Bay Fish Curry - local fish & shellfish, Thai spices, coconut, onion & ginger pickle, fragrant sticky rice Dessert Peppermint Crisp Gateaux - crème de mint ice cream, caramel chocolate mousse, mint gel or Dark Chocolate Soufflé - crème brûlée ice-cream, orange and cardamom salad Now to the food, being allergic to shellfish, I couldn’t sample the plate of very aromatic molluscs, but I have it on good authority that they were excellent. The Walker Bay Fish Curry also had raving reviews from our table, and that sticky rice oh my soul. Both the Springbok Tataki and Kudu Loin were excellent as well, we only had one of the desserts, but we are going back as I believe the Ceaser Salad is one for the books.

We had a fabulous evening again at Origins and our waitron Antoinette, gave us such a warm welcome back to the restaurant. The only reason I am scoring the atmosphere 4 stars, is the restaurant was very empty as the season has ended. A wonderful evening all around.

Service is excellent and staff are well trained, professional and attentive. Quality of food is good but not exceptional. Overall dining experience was mediocre and not aligned to the priced charged. My comparison is The Greenhouse Restaurant at the Hotel Hohenhort which is part of the same group of hotels.

Very good selection of vegetarian options. Beautiful balance of flavours and attention to detail, friendly efficient service. Just a pity we did were rather pushed for time and didn't have time to savour our lunch.
I'm afraid two things adversely affected our dining experience. Firstly, overly loud customers who were of the view that we should share their conversations and secondly a truly awful choice of back ground music. If you have to have back ground music (in Liz McGrath's day you didn't !) at least make it vaguely chordant.The parking attendant was very helpful indeed on a busy evening.

The restaurant felt over crowded, not with diners, but with staff. With five waiters serving us, my order arrived at my table incorrect. I’d love to recommend this establishment, but there are many restaurants in our area that simply does it better.
We decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Origins after hearing good reviews. We were not disappointed. Our host Sam and waitron Antoinette were friendly, efficient and well trained. We enjoyed the springbok tataki for starters, kudu loin and line fish for main. They were beautifully presented and delicious, sincere thanks to the chef. Sam surprised us with a friandise platter at the end of the evening. We had very enjoyable anniversary dinner. xxxxx

In the past two weeks I have learned a very valuable lesson: do not judge a restaurant on one, even two bad experiences. Last week I had one of the best bowls of grilled Squid ever at a restaurant a friend of mine refuses to frequent because of something he did not like on a visit 2 years ago. The 14th January is our wedding anniversary. The 14th being a Monday posed a problem...many of the restaurants of note are closed! Against my judgement, but remembering the lesson I learned the previous week I reserved a table at Origens. What a good decision! The Personel so friendly and helpful. Our starters-a Tuna "salad" and the Bouiabaise delicious. The mains- Prawns tempura with rather chilli noodles excellent. The only problem I have, as with many resaturants in the Walker Bay area is the absolute exhorbitant wine prices eg a bottle of Raka Biography selling for R120 in a wine shop, being sold for R350! However, a wonderful experience on a very special day in our lives

We have been raving about the food to all our friends... wonderful mixes of flavour and textures and delightfully presented...my foodie son had no complaints! The staff were all very friendly yet professional and the venue very chic but comfortable. Thank you!
This is an excellent restaurant preparing interesting and well thought out meals. The wine list is a little expensive due to the considerable mark up on some wines, but the choice is good. Service was generally attentive and competent.
