About Original Sin
EXECUTIVE CHEF, DAVID NICOL
DAVID NICOL LEFT NEW ZEALAND OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO DETERMINED TO MAKE HIS OWN WAY IN THE CULINARY WORLD.
Self-taught, he returned in late 2016 having honed his craft in a staggering array of international settings from the kitchens of Sydney and London, to ten years in cosmopolitan Amsterdam leading to the establishment and opening of the famous ‘Supperclub’ in Istanbul. From the shores of Galicia in Spain to the Caribbean coast of Columbia and Panama, the wonders of Thailand, and most recently the Middle Eastern melting pot of Israel, David is delighted to return to his homeland with a wealth of experience and talent.
David is excited about local ingredients and their story. Having always immersed himself in his locality, his return to New Zealand has brought an enticing rediscovery of all this amazing place has to offer. David’s passion is to cook beautiful food which is unpretentious, yet elegant. He accomplishes this by a focus on quality local ingredients which he allows to shine through sympathetic attention to complementarity of flavours, utilising yet not confusing international impulses. Many years in the restaurant industry has left David attuned to the diner’s experience—eating in his book should be fun as well as pleasantly surprising. His creativity and extensive international exposure combine with a focus on great local ingredients to pave the way for an exciting and innovative dining experience.
We had a fantastic experience at Original Sin, everything about it was on point! Will definitely be returning and recommending it.
Great venue, attentive and friendly staff. The food was ok and didn't meet expectations, a little meh.
Our waiter was so polite and helpful which made our experience at Original Sin so much better!
Fantastic Food. Delicious, generous servings, beautifully presented. Outstanding service from attentive and friendly staff. Really cool [uniquely themed] decor and surroundings. A terrific dining experience which i'll definitely be repeating.
The food was really lovely and the service was great. Would definitely go back to dine there when in Christchurch next.
The starters were absolutely delicious, but the main dishes weren't in particular the fish and the filet.. Though the meat/fish was cooked well and tasy, weird flavor combinations and the popcorn on the filet was just gross. I would recommend the starter menu over the mains.
Fantastic food!! and fun wait staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Couldn’t fault the entire dinner. Would rw one the smoke salman start - delicious!
Amazing food and awesome service. Definitely recommend 😁
The trust the Chef option was awesome. Our whole table loved it. Staff were all very friendly, chatty and attentive. Overall it was a fantastic experience and we will return. Thank you
Fantastic service and excellent food
Great service, and amazing food. Will definitely return
Always enjoy our dinner here. Another great evening thanks
We had a work function here in January with a group of 24 and found the restaurant very accomodating to our needs. The service from the staff was impeccable, from topping up the water to sorting our requirements. We had the set menu, which was well priced, the food was delicious and well presented. The Desserts were a little disappointing with the choice available on the set menu, but overall still very nice. Thanks for making our function enjoyable
Great all around, highly recommended
It was lovely and very nice service!
Had the chefs menu. Had two red meats A’s course 3 and 4. Would have preferred fish/chicken for one as they were too similar however enjoyed the selection.
Loved the enthusiasm and helpfulness of staff.
excellent food and good drinks choice, The drinks were very slow to appear even at 5pm when quiet. We would have had another round but had to head to the Court Theatre
Really appreciated the awesome waitstaff and the food was great.
We had great service and our waitress was very helpful. I have serious food allergies and she checked everything with the kitchen and I had a lovely meal!
The entrees were good but the mains and dessert were very disappointing. 4 of us ordered the prawn tagliatelle. The prawns In this dish were extremely small shrimp like you would find in fried rice and tasted like they had been frozen. The dish was swimming in peas which weren’t listed in the description of the dish. The pasta was smothered in a lacklustre sauce. The crepe I ordered for dessert was dry and the others’ carrot cake was more walnut than cake. Overall we were disappointed with our food.
Complete let down in food. We’ve been here on s number of occasions.. back in the leek dish days. Always good. We did not like any of the 5 dishes on the surprise menu. Service though was excellent.
Fantastic food and service
The wait staff were very engaging and added to the enjoyment of our meal.
