About Kings Restaurant at Old Thorns
Whether you desire a hearty pre-round breakfast or a carvery lunch, the Kings Restaurant offers the perfect opportunity to sate your appetite – all while enjoying panoramic views across the golf course towards the South Downs.
Went for afternoon tea which was a pretty poor experience all in all. The sandwich selection and quantity was disappointing. The cakes reminded us of the ones in Iceland for a £1 a box but the scones and jam did make up some way for the let down of the rest - they were lovely. We were given one teapot and small jug of milk for 4 people and the coffee drinker was just poured one of the very small cups. It would be so much better to leave a pot of coffee and a couple of teapots and one of hot water on the table. You don’t want to have to keep asking for things. The atmosphere was non existent as apart from one lone diner, we were the only other table there. That’s not necessarily the fault of the restaurant as I understand bookings will be down at present. Staff were all nice and friendly. The hand sanitiser had run out on entry to the restaurant which was not good. I would not recommend to friends nor would I rebook again myself but it was a nice catch up with friends!
Not much atmosphere due to nobody else having afternoon tea in the same room
Lovely food and really well presented, served and cooked in a friendly atmosphere
There seems to be some sort of grey area about tipping the waiting staff here we tried to on the card machine but the noise the waitress made seems to suggest that they don’t get that tip? Great food and service but would like the tipping clarified if cash isn’t left and that it’s on a card?
Did was just about warm, and everything was dry and over cooked. Not a pleasant carvery and won't be returning.
Had a lovely family afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings. Friendly waitress and amazing food. Already planning our next visit . Debbie. Brighton
Booked a table online for lunch 3 weeks ago to attend on 10th September. We travelled 73 mile round trip to find the restaurant NOT open and an extremely rude and unhelpful receptionist! She made us look stupid by telling us the restaurant is not open and our reservation must have been for afternoon tea. When I showed her the booking was for lunch, she simply said “I will have to get someone to look at that” and that was all she had to say. Not even an apology not did she offer us afternoon tea instead!!!!! What’s funny is that 48 hours before my reservation, I received an email asking me to confirm that I was still going and 24 hours later, I receive this wonderful survey asking me to rate their food & drink, atmosphere, service and value for money! What a joke! I’m still waiting for a response following the complaint i’ve sent them.
A lovely afternoon.
Food was nice and portions were generous. Bad point was Covid guidelines don't seem to apply here. Only half the staff wearing masks some even serving food without them. I wouldn't return for the reason of not feeling safe.
Huge carvery portion. Very friendly helpful staff
Lovely afternoon tea, socially distanced from others in the restaurant. So much to eat had to take a doggy bag home. Willceryainly come again
Great service, very friendly. Good atmosphere
Food was very well presented
...the service from the waitresses was faultless, however you advertise your afternoon tea with ‘pastries’ yet all we had were muffin type cup cakes which were sticky and felt like they had been sat out for a while prior to serving...infact I can ensure you, we did not have ANY pastries at all included, the scones were quite hard and felt like they had been reheated, and not fresh and we didn’t even finish 1 each as they weren’t pleasant, at no point where we offered more sandwiches or tea...I was very disappointed that only half an hour after being served, other tables were given beautiful afternoon teas with little macaroons, square pastry style cakes...did we get the left overs from the day before??? Because it certainly didn’t feel like we got the same as others and I’m sad to say but I wouldn’t be rushing back anytime soon for another one...
Enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with my sister in law great value for money as it was eat out to help out. Service was good
It was so lovely to catch up with a friend and enjoy afternoon tea. Overall a lovely visit. Our first milk was off and took a while to get an extra pot of tea but we will be back.
Great food and service but the chefs that are plating your meal should where masks..
Love the place......absolutely faultless.....can’t beat the Kings Carvery and we have had loads lol....
It's a shame that not everything was open and no room service
It was my birthday and we all had a lovely time with you
Food was ok. Cakes didn’t taste particularly nice to be honest. Scones a little over cooked. Staff fine, not attentive though, didn’t ask if we wanted more drinks etc I had to ask.
Service was nonexistent. Had to keep asking if we wanted something. Sandwiches were on the hard side, like they had been made hours ago and cakes didn't taste very fresh and scones were rock hard.
I treated my mum to afternoon. The service was excellent and the food was delicious
We love coming to the old thorns for afternoon tea & it’s always fab, this time though we were a little disappointed with the cake selection, it was very plain..having said that the sandwiches & scones were yummy 😋
Lovely satisfying g carvery. Roast potatos fab. Very friendly staff.
