About Old Stamp House Restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is located in Ambleside at the heart of the Lake District National Park, in the former work place of one of its most famous and treasured natives: William Wordsworth.
Opened in 2014, the Old Stamp House team aim to offer you a unique and unprecedented experience of the food culture our county has to offer. Not only using the famous and iconic local herdwick sheep that roam the local fells, we also draw inspiration from the lesser known ports on the west coast of the county with their rich history of importing spices and alcohol used in many of the local speciality dishes. We also use the small fishing fleets at Barrow and Whitehaven to source as much local fish and shellfish as possible. Having been brought up in the nearby valley of Great Langdale our team use this unparalleled local knowledge to collect and source wild herbs, mushrooms and game from the surrounding woodlands, forests, mountains and coastline.
This is our third visit to this restaurant and we absolutely love this place. We went for the 7 course autumn menu and each course was cooked to perfection and delicious . Highlights included the scallop starter and the gingerbread pudding ...divine !!
Everything was perfect, we had a very enjoyable night at Old Stamp House.
Wonderful food in a friendly and informal setting.
Thank you very much for having us - we had a fantastic meal in a great setting.
Excellent experience all round! Lovely food, catered well for dietary needs. Impressed with how much the waiters knew about what they were serving.
This visit, our second this year, proved to be as splendid as the first. Fabulous food, impeccable service in a cosy venue. Thank you all for accommodating the diverse dietary peculiarities of our 4 person party.
great night of excellent food and wine. will be back!
As ever, the atmosphere, service and above all the food-impeccable. I make a reservation every time I visit cumbria, it's always the highlight of the week 'food wise' don't know anywhere better anywhere.
Great food with an informal and friendly service
The 4 for atmosphere was due to the music being in a little loud and I wouldn’t have said anything but someone turned it down anyway
Wet and miserable outside warm cosy and satisfying inside always a delight to taste great seasonal cooking we cleaned every plate!
We were party of four for lunch. The meal was superb and the service was top class but not stuffy. We will definitely return.
The reception was warm and friendly, the service was prompt and the the explanation of the ingredients of each course were clear and appreciated
A great lunch thank you, hard luck on you we will be coming back.
Although some people might consider this restaurant on the expensive side the quality is so high that I consider it good value for money. It’s my favourite restaurant because, for me, it’s the peak in terms of high end cooking, Other restaurants take things too far and just get silly.
This restaurant never fails to give us a delightful experience of eating (and drinking) in a lovely setting, with friendly and efficient service in a relaxed atmosphere. All food was thoughtfully planned, executed and presented and accompanying wines were very good. A special mention for the wild mallard which simply melted in the mouth, and the unusual gingerbread dessert with the lightest sheep's milk yoghourt accompaniment. The extras as ever were wonderful and the whole experience a huge pleasure. Thanks to all.
Service was friendly but slow and disorganised
A great restaurant with excellent food, wine and service. Relaxing and personable with interesting factual information regarding wine and spirits as well as food provenance. Would recommend to anyone with an appreciation of good food, wine and service.
Food was excellent. Unfortunately made to feel mostt unwelcome until it was time to pay.
It was fabulous! The food was delicious and the team of servers were quite charming.
A lovely meal served by very friendly and professional staff. Craig is as good as front of house as we have experienced over many years at many of the leading restaurants in the country. Chef Ryan is like a breath of fresh air,inter-reacting with his customers and obviously interested in their feedback. The restaurant is a credit to the staff and a little jewell to Ambleside
Thoroughly enjoyable. Beautiful food and nice touches with amuse bouche and little extra dishes compliments of the kitchen. Love the local links. There was a big selection of wine but the majority were quite expensive. The wine we chose was one of the less expensive and was really lovely but a few more under £30 might be nice.
Quite simply the best meal we have enjoyed in years! Outstanding food, service & ambience. Thank you.
having paid so much for the meal and wine it would have been very nice to have been given a copy of the menu, with so many courses on the tasting menu its hard to remember all the details. We really enjoyed some of the wines, but have no way of remembering them all .
