About Old Stamp House Restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is located in Ambleside at the heart of the Lake District National Park, in the former work place of one of its most famous and treasured natives: William Wordsworth.
Opened in 2014, the Old Stamp House team aim to offer you a unique and unprecedented experience of the food culture our county has to offer. Not only using the famous and iconic local herdwick sheep that roam the local fells, we also draw inspiration from the lesser known ports on the west coast of the county with their rich history of importing spices and alcohol used in many of the local speciality dishes. We also use the small fishing fleets at Barrow and Whitehaven to source as much local fish and shellfish as possible. Having been brought up in the nearby valley of Great Langdale our team use this unparalleled local knowledge to collect and source wild herbs, mushrooms and game from the surrounding woodlands, forests, mountains and coastline.
Absolutely outstanding food. What a great find and surprise! If you want Michelin star-standard food without the fanfare, fuss and pricing, this is the place to go. We’re moving to The Lakes soon. We’ll be back!
Delicious food. Good service. Price point just a little too high, not by much but still a bit over what is reasonable. Perhaps it was because it was Valentines night. Would still come back but only for infrequent special occasions as £200 for two people with only 4 glasses of wine between us is not going to be a regular event for us.
The service and food were fantastic, the personal touch really added to the experience, they really went out of their way to make our visit special.
Perfect as always.
Best food we’ve had in a long time, absolutely loved everything about restaurant and food!
Great food and service. Lunch menu excellent value for money.
A truly excellent dining experience! It is the second time we have visited (we live in London), and both times the tasting menu has been the best meal we (myself and my partner) have ever eaten. I enquired ahead of time whether it would be possible to have a vegan version, and I was assured that this would not be a problem. The food that I was served was fantastic, and so clever that it was matched with my partner’s meat dishes. Along with the incredible food, came incredible service. With each dish came a description (and brief history/extra information) which was greatly appreciated. All in all, amazing! We hopefully will be back again soon!
The meal was interesting and delicious, staff very pleasant. We will certainly go again, but would prefer not to have background music.
As usual every thing was perfect and good value for a first class three course
Excellent evening ,warm welcome from the front of house team food was exceptional.
From the first course to the last your taste buds are set to come alive. I can safely say that I haven't had food to better it, and we have been to a lot of fine dining establishments, can't recommend the old stamp house enough.
4stars for atmosphere only because it was a quiet night in February. All 4 of us agreed it was one of the highest quality meals, in every respect, that we’ve had in a long time. We will definitely be back.
Wonderful lunch for my husband's 40th birthday. The food and service were outstanding. Attention to detail without any fuss and totally delicious ! Thoroughly recommend.
as last time another stunning meal cheers guy had a great time 😊
Amazing food and great service.
Stand out of the was the lamb shoulder
The quality of the food and standard of service from Ryan and Craig is always excellent at the Old Stamp House. A favourite destination of ours in Ambeside. Always an extremely enjoyable experience.
First visit, but will be returning. Excellent meal throughout, but particularly the ‘starters’ and ‘sweets’. Some great twists on favourites
One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten- small tasting menu. Really friendly helpful staff and they accommodated my dietary problem well Marvellous- will definitely be back
Outstandingly good food. Up there with some of the best that I have eaten.
Lovely food & a great atmosphere. The taster menu was very nice, we went with the matching wines for each course. Very enjoyable evening. Thankyou
Absolutely incredible food. Lovely staff. Would recommend it to anyone. Although I'd add that at the price, you'd expect it to be that good. The only thing I'd say that is 'negative' is that the acoustics weren't great, so it was a little hard to hear what the wait staff were saying, and it was generally a bit 'basementy' with all the echos. My partner and I thought that the addition of tablecloths would have been good idea - both aesthetically, and they would also have soaked up a lot of the echos in the room. But that's just our preference. Other than that incredibly minor and subjective 'criticism', the place was outstanding. Our thanks to all the wonderful and talented staff. Easily one of the very best - perhaps the best - dining experiences available in Cumbria
enjoyed every mouthful beautifully cooked and presented food perfect temperature and seasoned to perfection a real adventure to eat very professional front of house service who had wide knowledge of what was being served we will return as soon as possible. on the night we had to tasting menu. Sue and Mike schober coniston
