About Old Stamp House Restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is located in Ambleside at the heart of the Lake District National Park, in the former work place of one of its most famous and treasured natives: William Wordsworth.
Opened in 2014, the Old Stamp House team aim to offer you a unique and unprecedented experience of the food culture our county has to offer. Not only using the famous and iconic local herdwick sheep that roam the local fells, we also draw inspiration from the lesser known ports on the west coast of the county with their rich history of importing spices and alcohol used in many of the local speciality dishes. We also use the small fishing fleets at Barrow and Whitehaven to source as much local fish and shellfish as possible. Having been brought up in the nearby valley of Great Langdale our team use this unparalleled local knowledge to collect and source wild herbs, mushrooms and game from the surrounding woodlands, forests, mountains and coastline.
My wife & I dined at the Old Stamp House for the first time on 8 Nov 19 The food was 1st Class The whole experience as excellent Our intention is to dine again at the Old Stamp House whenever we visit Ambleside, normally once or twice a year
Gorgeous little restaurant hidden away in Ambleside. We opted for the full tasting menu and added a wine flight and we weren't disappointed. Every dish was perfectly prepared and all ingredients complimented each other perfectly. The wine pairings were well matched and the guy serving them was knowledgeable about each one, giving us enough information without bombarding or speaking in jargon. All the staff were attentive and polite, making our evening a very enjoyable one. Thank you!
Absolutely blown away! The restaurant is very low-key and relaxed. There is no pretense. We went for the taster menu and every single dish was presented with flair and the flavours were outstanding, well seasoned and complemented each other. The wine pairings were equal to the food, chosen well and with thought, gave us something to think about, especially the 1945 dessert wine. We were surprised at how reasonable the price was too. This was an absolute find.
This is our third visit to the old Stamp House and the quality of food and service are second to none. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit once again. Thank you to the chef and the staff.
Great restaurant. Exceptional service, friendly and professional. Wonderful food showcasing some fantastic local produce. Well worth a visit if you’re lucky enough to get a table!
Fabulous experience, cooking of highest order, relaxed informal service, casual but attentive. Good wine list, plenty served by the glass. Memorable little treats served by kitchen before starters arrived. We ate starter/main & desert from the set lunch menu, all delicious and exceptional value. Already looking forward to a return visit
Absolutely exceptional! The food was amazing, with excellent wine suggestions although they didn’t have the white we initially requested but the alternative was a worthy replacement. The wine recommended to go with the cheese course was outstanding, very special. The service was first class. Thank you for looking after us. We will definitely return!
Great food and wine with excellent service
All excellent again and thanks for swapping the lamb for the roe in the tasting menu. Good consistency. Keep it up. Martin
6pm booking. Turned up 5.50pm. Door locked. Kept waiting in cold, ignored by staff. You need some leeway here if you want us in on time.
Delicious food and attentive and friendly service.
Even though the road to the restaurant from or hotel was closed - we were determined to get to the Old Stamp House and it was definitely worth it! All the staff were so friendly and of course the food was absolutely delicious!
Our favourite place to bring friends and family. Always excellent quality and friendly service
Food and wine matching fabulous
This was without doubt the best lunch we have enjoyed in recent times. The food is absolutely exquisite set within an atmosphere dedicated to making the experience as good as they can for their guests. The front of house and waiter service is relaxed and friendly but very sharp. The people who own and run this restaurant are local and know the source of their ingredients. We would recommend the taster menu which does showcase their speciality dishes. The drinks are reasonably priced for a Michelin star restaurant. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.
Wonderful meal with great service and friendly staff.
We had an absolutely fantastic evening. The food was beautiful and the atmosphere was great and very relaxing. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and we would definitely come back again, and recommend to our friends.
Fabulous meal, a place to visit when in Ambleside
4th visit to the Old Stamp House and we absolutely love it. Great value for money, unpretentious local food, served by attentive staff without the uncomfortable formality that’s often present with refined dining experiences. I will continue to recommend it to anyone who will listen to me.
We have visited here every time we are in the Lakes and it has consistently been excellent in every aspect. The recent award of a Michelin star is testament to this and reflective of the effort and commitment of all involved. Well deserved
Superb lunch. Everything was presented beautifully and was tasty. The Picpoul wine was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. We've been a few times now and are glad they have a Michelin star except booking may be more difficult!
Highlight of our holiday
Exceptional evening all round. The food was stunning and we were also very happy to have chosen the wine flight to accompany it (which at £45 was a great price). Our host and other staff were great too. I couldn't fault the experience and if I lived locally this would be my "go to" place for any special occasion or just a treat for me and my wife. Brilliant!
Always delicious food and great ambiance - congrats on the Michelin star!
Easy to understand why this restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star. The taster menu was superb, the service warm and friendly, unpretentious. We look forward to visiting again.
