A meal is a celebration. Championing the finest produce and honouring the ingredients is a passion for Executive Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen and the brigade.
Sophisticated surroundings and garden views connect Michelin star dishes to the landscapes they originate from, with an exciting wine list to complement the creations.
Experience fine dining with real Northern hospitality.
Fantastic meal, high quality, great service and friendly staff. Our first experience at Northcote but definitely not our last.
We had a lovely stay. The reason for the 3 stars was that we were disappointed with the main course. My wife is a pescatarian and she was given basically a plate of carrots. Very unimaginative from the kitchen and left us feeling underwhelmed. We raised this with the staff who dealt with it sympathetically.
The food was lovely but the service was really bad unfortunately. The servers each individually we're nice and friendly but the coordination was very poor. We were sat in the waiting area for nearly an hour, our drinks were long gone and no-one asked if we wanted another, which we obviously did. Only after asking were we seated at our table where we didn't receive our starters until around 9pm.. 2 hours after arrival. And this was after complaining. We had driven 1hour to go to northcote and were very hungry by this point. The servers didn't rectify this and we were instead given the excuse that it was because of a party they were catering for. Wow, how special we felt. After a couple of complaints we were told we were priority and luckily our mains weren't too far behind. We were celebrating a 30th and 60th birthday which were never acknowledged. The server explained the evening was not over.. it was as we had finished our meal and 2 party members had already left to get home to the babysitter. To top this off we overheard another customer say to a waiter that we obviously didn't understand how fine dining establishments work. This obviously unsettled us even more and we were extremely annoyed at this point. Not that it matters but we have dined in fine dining restaurants all over the world and have even visited northcote before so we are more than aware of what to expect and have honestly received much better service in my local pub. That type of snobbery is completely unbearable. Anyway all in all the food was nice, the service was poor and we will not be returning but I doubt they want us back anyway so hey-ho.
Friendly service nothing was too much trouble.
I have visited a number of times and service has always been exceptional. On this occasion I found the service very slow and not as welcoming as before. It rather spoiled a birthday treat.
We have been coming to Northcote for over 12 years, usually once or twice each year to celebrate special occasions. We were rather disappointed last year but thought that might have been a one-off. Not so it seems. We came for the 6 course tasting menu on Friday 6th March and left even more disappointed this time. Pre-dinner drinks service was very slow indeed - we arrived at 19:20 but weren't offered a drink at all (and couldn't even seem to catch a waiter's eye) until 19:50 - and then had a rushed and unfinished drink prior to dinner at 20:00. Not what one would usually expect and not a good start. At the end of the day, however, it is all about the food and this time (and last time also) we felt the menu lacked inventiveness, taste was bland, and the portions meagre. The cornish mussels (all two of them) were almost entirely without flavour and the texture unappetising. The Turbot was (unintentionally) stone cold so sent back. The Squab pigeon (a dish usually noted for its rich taste) had little flavour and really needed the mango and curry to make it worth eating. The mutton was tough and the carrots dull and uninteresting. Not all courses can be sure fire winners but we have usually had at least one or two outstanding and memorable courses in any menu at Northcote. Not a single course on this menu cane remotely close to that. The restaurant was also extremely noisy and the entrance (where we sat) exceptionally so, so that at times one could barely hear one's normal conversation. I don't expect to hear guests shouting to make themselves heard over dinner in an establishment at this level. Relaxed attitude to dress code is fine - but is it really acceptable to have see guests in jeans and trainers when dining at least semi-formally at this level? Sorry but I think not. Finally, having retired to our room, we were woken at half past midnight by guests elsewhere in the "lodge" who seemed to think it acceptable to play loud banging disco music - Danny (manager) kindly sorted it out by 00:45 but the music had returned the next morning... Took 5 attempts to get the breakfast order right, with a succession of waitresses bringing various items in dribs and drabs throughout breakfast after repeated requests and reminders. All in all, the whole Northcote experience has, over the last year or so, become somewhat diminished in our view. Not sure whether Lisa Goodwin-Allen's grip on the kitchen is as tight as it used to be and the takeover by Stafford hotel group seems to have made the whole experience feel rather more corporate and slightly "downmarket" - despite the top end price! In our view Northcote seems to be resting on its laurels - and these days that's not a safe place to be when there are so many other restaurants offering inventive, stylish cuisine. I doubt we will be returning in a hurry but Northcote will need to up its game a great deal if it wishes to keep its clientele on this weekend's showing..
Fantastic as always, the exceptionally knowledgeable staff always make it a memorable experience.

The 6 course taster menu was gorgeous. The turbot was a delight
Went for lunch and ate off the seasonal menu. Absolutely delicious food and formal but excellent, friendly service. Will definitely be returning for a dinner reservation and one of the tasting menus!
A delightful time was spent enjoying the afternoon tea. It was a special occasion for my guest who was celebrating her 50th birthday as a treat off me. It was a very restful time. Nice and quiet with lovely jazz playing and pleasant friendly staff who were very attentive and did not make us feel uncomfortable in any way.. 10 out of 10. Chris D
