Fabulous meal - so sorry you are locked down again but we will definitely be back. Imaginative and seasonal food, great service and well spaced tables. Good luck.
Just a few lines to thank you so much for the wonderful tasting menu my wife and I had on Sunday afternoon Extremely high standard of cuisine, coupled with great restaurant atmosphere. Very courteous/happy staff. A real pleasure. We were very impressed. I will return!!! Chloe & Conor McGrath
Amazing food delivered by a friendly and knowledgeable team. Loved the concept of a tasting menu which you choose yourself. Great wine list too.
Hands down the best roast beef I've ever eaten. The beetroot dish was also a particular favourite with our table, and the fish dishes were also excellent. The Ancient Shepherds never disappoints - really inventive dishes, cooked by people who care about the ingredients so that their passion for food shines through. Service is relaxed and hits just the right note. A firm favourite, and we look forward to going back once lockdown is lifted.
We really enjoyed our meal at the Shepherds, the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was excellent with clear information about each course. So sad that you will be closing but I could foresee a bright future for the restaurant given our experience.. We will definitely return so hoping that this lockdown won't prevent this excellent business from continuing to thrive.
We had a fantastic dinner on Saturday. The food was amazing, and we loved the concept of being able to get smaller dishes to try more things on the menu. We hope to be able to come back soon!
Best food I’ve ever eaten!
Highly recommended. Lovely thoughtfully constructed dishes, good service. Not huge portions - as expected , but they packed in fabulous flavour and The three course menu comes in cheaper than A main course in most average bistros in town. A great place for a special occasion but also just to treat yourself to lovely food and drink.
Best roast beef in a long time melted in the mouth will book again
Atmosphere ok and I’m sure it will improve once you are allowed to fill the place.
We had the 8.15 booking for my wife’s birthday . We where placed in a side room away from the bar and main dining area , we where the only table of 4 in this area dining so it was very quiet with no atmosphere what so ever . Three of our party had the turbot which they all agreed was very bland and very very small . I had the steak which was fine .Would I return ................not sure !!
A fabulous experience again. We eat out a lot in good restaurants in London and have been delighted by the high quality of the food and wines, the service and the ambience at [email protected] Prices may seem high if you’re expecting a usual pub lunch in a Cambridgeshire village but that’s the wrong benchmark: this is exceptional cooking, with the confident, light touch service you see in a modern Michelin star restaurant. Christmas is going to be lovely in your cosy rooms: I would suggest posting some information soon on when you will be open/closed during the festive season.
Everything was excellent. The food was very tasty and the service was quick, efficient and polite. The value for money is also very good. Portions are a bit small (for the small plates) but surprisingly filling. We will definitely come back for more!
Great new restaurant on the scene!
Service: efficient but lacking in making a connection with guests to make it a special evening. Not much chat. Atmosphere: Lacking. Nothing special. Food: Very, very disappointed. Mark’s food at Alimentum was amazing. Very original, ingenious, exciting & extremely flavoursome. This is why we came to eat here but the food was none of these and it was VERY expensive for what you get. For example £8 for a 1 inch square of fish that was bland. The salmon starter didn’t know if it should be hot or cold & the salmon had little flavour. I could go on but I won’t. For a £48 per head meal, I left feeling hungry, very disappointed & ripped off. Such a shame as it was well below expectations & we know Mark is a lot better than this.
Dear Gill, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. In a way of response (note that I usually do not respond to ResDiary reviews..) however I feel like I have too on this occasion. Firstly, my recommendation would be that if you do not enjoy elements of an experience please mention it to the team when asked on the evening, of which I know I personally checked back on you multiple times. On each occasion nothing at all was mentioned. In response; Service: due to the global COVID-19 pandemic we have to distance, with masks on. As you can imagine this limits the amount of rapport we can safety build. I have to take your health and the health of my team seriously and ensure that it is a priority. At nearly every other restaurant I have had the pleasure of running guests where usually welcomed with a handshake, a warm open armed welcome. Unfortunately we live in very different times now. As above, in terms of the atmosphere we have had to remove a lot of soft furnishings in order to safely open a restaurant in the middle of a global pandemic. I would love more pictures, features etc in my restaurant. Unfortunately that is not the priority at the minute, keeping people safe and trying to stay above water is. This is the first negative review that we have received on the food. Which does surprise me. So far feeding over 1200 people in 9 weeks and everyone has loved our offering. Enjoyed all the aspects of the menu. Our cured salmon dish is a cold cured salmon to keep its fresh flavour whilst adding a warm seaweed stock sauce packed with caviar and brown shrimp. I can safely say that this is a crowd favourite and has been on our menu in variations since opening. For your main course you opted to share 3 small plates (which are designed to be starters) with your partner, whilst the other 2 guests opted for large plates. If this was insufficient, we always mention, if you would like to order another plate or another side etc - you can do at anytime. In response to your comments on our pricing, we are competitively priced, for a unique independent restaurant on the outskirts of a buzzing Cambridge food scene. We have passed on the 5% VAT cut to our guests and operate at incredibly tight margins. The Stone bass, for which you had a small portion of at £8 cost us £178 for the fish to be freshly caught and delivered to us giving us a total of 15 large portions. Along with its garnish, contributing to the cost of table linen, electricity, the team who work so hard to provide the service. The list of costs to run a restaurant go on. Unfortunately, you are not going to get fresher produce for a better price in my opinion. Now, before I finish this response, £48 per head. Your bill was £190 for which you left a £16.50 gratuity. So the actual cost of the meal was £173.50. £43 per head. £42 of this was a bottle of our Pinot Noir and £5.50 for another beverage. Making your food cost £126 or £31.5 a head. I wouldn’t say that this is “VERY” expensive at all. Thank you for your review. We will continue what we do, from which we have received phenomenal feedback so far. Actually we have also received fantastic feedback from Friday evening when you dined with us. I will mention this once more as it is so important. Please, when you dine somewhere, give the team the feedback so they can improve or explain. Otherwise you take something great such as on the night positive feedback and twist it, leaving an awfully sour taste in our mouths. Should you wish to discuss further, or continue to provide feedback as you say you wish to in your review, please do contact me. Kind regards, Bradley Dorrington General Manager
Food was excellent and the ambience really good despite Covid restrictions.
Really enjoyed our 2nd visit. Fantastic food and service. Will be booking again.
Staff were excellent, however food fell short and was hit and miss. Duck liver pâté was great, fish dishes should be avoided.
Amazing lunch again at The Shepherds. All the wine pairings were perfect. We just love it! Thank you.
Great evening. Food was incredible and simple. Full of flavour. Service attentive, friendly, without bothering you too much.
Our late afternoon Sunday lunch at MJP was really delicious. A great selection of dishes and plenty to choose from, which meant we were really spoilt for choice on which items to pick, as well as which wines to pair. The advice from the team was spot on and service was really friendly. We'll be back for sure!
We have a fabulous Sunday lunch would definitely go back
Great food and service. Dinner was excellent but it was noisy when the other tables filled making it difficult to hear friends!
Really good food and service. Will definitely be coming back!
First class food.
