About Mistley Thorn
The Mistley Thorn is located in the centre of the historic coastal village of Mistley and is two minutes walk from Mistley station which has direct services to Colchester, Harwich and London Liverpool Street. Built as a coaching inn circa 1723, The Mistley Thorn offers award-winning dining and accommodation in tastefully designed surroundings opposite the River Stour. American born executive chef Sherri Singleton has developed a menu using the best of the area’s seasonal produce.
Excellent food. All 5 of us were impressed by the standard of our meals. The wine we had was very good too. Nice atmosphere and helpful pleasant staff. Best Roast Sunday lunch in the area, I think we all agreed!
Great meal, as always
A lovely lunch time meal. Service was first class. We'll done to the chefs the food was amazing
I have only given 3 star for atmosphere as we were seated in the rear dining area .... It feels very detached ...I LOVE your main area, but really not feeling the rear bit ..... That said service, amazing, food .... Amazing...the seabass was OUT of this WORLD ! Thank you!
We had a really fantastic lunch, I was really impressed with the vegetarian choice and the vegan burger was delicious. One of the best places to eat in the area.
Excellent meal, will certainly return
Disappointed that the pudding menu was inaccurate - we were looking forward to the Fig Frangipane but we're served an Apple version. However this was quickly resolved (we were too full for pudding really!) and we were not charged. Otherwise excellent - the Skate & Sea Bass were both very good.
Food and drink was delicious as usual!
This review is for two visits over two weeks. My partner and I enjoyed a date night at The Thorne and couldn't rate the place high enough. The food and service were amazing and the atmosphere perfect for an intimate evening. My second visit was yesterday, a treat for my father's 81st birthday. Once again the food and service were amazing. Even my 9 year old ate so much he loved everything on his plate and everyone else's. The Salmon trio starter was enough for 3 to share and so tasty and fresh. I would recommend the mussels all day long and if you have room for desert......eat everything because you won't be able to choose just one. Cant wait to return again. Fab Fab Fab
Lovely food, good service and a relaxing, clean, well presented environment
Excellent restaurant with a great atmosphere. The food is exceptional and service is very good.
Excellent lunch. Food good; staff polite and helpful. Covid restrictions didn't spoil the visit.
We stopped off for lunch here on our way to a weekend away in the area. The service was friendly and professional and we felt very safe. The place has a lovely atmosphere and the food was exceptional. My wife thought that her fish pie was the best she had ever had and the mixed seafood dish that I had was outstanding as was the fig frangipane tart that we had for dessert. Couldn't recommend the whole experience highly enough. Will definitely visit again if we are in the area.
The most delicious meal and lovely service. We managed to fit in 3 courses and each one was absolutely delicious. We will be back - again!
Friendly and relaxed atmosphere and good food
Food and service excellent
Lovely meal with friends the day before going into further COVID restrictions. We were initially sat by the door which meant a blast of cold air every time anyone opened the front door into the restaurant but once we had asked if we could change to a less exposed area, staff were very accommodating and found us a table in the back of the restaurant. The food was lovely, and the only reason I scored a 4 instead of a 5 was that it took a while to attract attention to ask for our bill. This is a minor issue and we would be happy to recommend the Mistley Thorn to others. We had a poor dining experience a couple of years ago here but I believe new owners have taken it over and the standard has definitely improved.
Very enjoyable evening in the restaurant and a very comfortable night
Great evening for moules madness!
Not up to its usual standard
Excellent lunchtime experience with delicious food, friendly staff and good social distancing. Highly recommended.
All staff were wearing mask and proper Covid restrictions had been put in place. Felt as safe as anywhere could be and there's nothing more they could do to make it more Covid secure!
Stunning Sunday roast for two with excellent Yorkshire puddings, delicious roast beef and gravy followed by superb quince crumble and ice cream. Very friendly and attenative team. Good to see the other well distanced tables were all booked too.
Really delicious food and my two children asked to come back, whilst in the middle of their meal as they loved it so much! First time my husband tried oysters and thought they were nice!
My friends and I enjoyed a lovely breakfast and compared to others around it really stands out as the best. One area to improve on though is the coffee.
