About Matfen Hall
Classic and contemporary dining in stately surroundings.
Under our acclaimed Executive Chef, Paul Blakey, and Head Chef, Nick Kleist, our cuisine is carefully prepared using the freshest, local ingredients and in season meat and produce.
Room was located beneath a room which contained energetic children akin to a herd of elephants, with loud thumping noises from the room above throughout our 2 night stay. Very stressful experience and was not relaxing in the slightest. No view from room despite being told by staff at the time of booking that this room was same grade as the superior room I had originally booked. This was not the case. Room was not cleaned during our 2 night stay which meant that wet towels, used toiletries were not replaced and beds were left unmade. Breakfast choice was very small and limited, poor quality and had to wait a long time after ordering. Incorrect bill (over £200 higher than the correct bill) was posted under the door which added to my stress levels. Left this hotel feeling tired and deflated. Expectations were not met. It’s a shame as the hotel setting, communal rooms and grounds are lovely, but the level of service at present does not meet the advertised four star rating. Could not recommend this hotel to my relatives or friends.
We enjoyed a relaxing couple of days in Matfen Hall and found all staff to be friendly and helpful. The level of restaurant service and quality of food was very good. The prices are reasonable for the food and the food is well presented with good portion sizes overall. The complimentary appetiser at the beginning of the evening meal was well received. There is a good wine list and plenty of choice but the price of wines is quite high, although it didn't stop us from enjoying good wines on the two evenings we dined in the restaurant. The service staff were pleasant in both the restaurant and in the bar but a bit of training may be needed in producing a good espresso! The background music supported the relaxed ambience of the restaurant. Despite one very minor 'complaint' about the coffee wE would not rule out making a return visit in the future!
Evening meal & breakfast both excellent in the Library Restaurant.
Lovely meal with my partner for our babymoon and pre wedding visit
We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea thank you. The waiters were friendly and attentive. I cannot vault our experience and would happily recommend it to others.
Starter was good apart from the waiter taking the plates away when my husband still had food in his mouth! Main course lamb was pink as waiter had said it would be but so stingy and tough it was impossible to eat. When we brought it to the attention of the waiter he said it's Ok it's pink and therefore is fine ! We proceeded to show him now it was impossible to cut so eventually he took it away but the meal was spoilt by that time. The dessert, the pastry on the chocolate torte was really dry and tasteless. It was such a shame as we have been coming to Matfen for over 12 years and even spent Christmas with Matfen a few years ago as we always have had a great time and experienced amazing food and service however this time it was a real let down. On check out the receptionist didn't even bother to ask if we had enjoyed our stay which summed up the weekend and how the staff seem to have lost there touch. So won't be rushing to come back u fortunately as up to this weekend I would have said Matfen was my favourite UK getaway.
Really impressed by welcome, room, facilities, food and customer service
An excellent afternoon tea with prosecco. Plenty of choice and quantity
Always a wonderfully pleasant experience. Staff are attentive and friendly. Service is exemplary. As we visit regularly there is very little variation on menu. That said the food served is of an excellent standard, perfectly presented and cooked to perfection.
Fillet steak could not have been bettered. Service as usual was excellent.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I appreciate the dining room was not busy when we were there but the service was fantastic, friendly and attentive without being over the top. I believe the waiter was called Pawel.
Ate in the Library Restaurant at Matfen Hall. Staff were very friendly and attentive without being over bearing or intrusive. Food was delicious, we had the pigeon breast to start and fillet steaks for main which were cooked perfectly. The setting in the Library is very luxurious, we'll definitely return
Lovely afternoon in a stunning setting, had a very relaxing afternoon. Will definitely back
Afternoon Tea in the Library. Beautiful surroundings, very restful and the food and service was superb. Made to feel very welcome. Thank you.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
They don't know how to make porridge in the kitchen must try better!!!!!otherwise all was great
Service much much better than previous visits however food especially main courses were disappointing, fish very over cooked. For such a lovely setting we always feel the food is very hit and miss.
Didn’t eat in library as booked, but in an adjoining room. Very noisy as there was a wedding on. The guests spilled into the room where we were having afternoon tea. At times it felt that we were gate crashing a wedding
Great food & service in lovely surroundings.
Exemplary service and food.
There was a mix up with the bill but it was sorted for us over night so we could enjoy the rest of our evening. Would highly recommend to anyone. It’s our 3rd time here and will certainly be back.
Wonderful afternoon tea I Library Room for my friends birthday. Mellow atmosphere with our own butler serving!
High standard of service despite a busy evening of diners. Great food, well presented, lovely atmosphere.
