great setting and fantastic tea options
I get that this is a automated survey that has been generated however I'm still awaiting a response from the hotel manager after I made a complaint to reception. I'll go ahead and explain on here anyways. I planned my visit as it was my partners birthday and we decided on the spa followed by afternoon tea. As my partner has crohns I rang ahead (11am) to make sure they could provide white bread and to book the gentlemans afternoon tea for 4pm. I was told there was no need to book and white bread was fine. After arriving and paying for the spar we were seated for afternoon tea only to be told there was no gentlemans choice and no alternative given. As we live over 40 minutes from the hotel and the afternoon tea was its main draw alongside the spa we left feeling we wasted our time, fuel, and money! Hope this complaint reaches someone this time, as my initial one didn't via the reception staff. Regards Iain stubbs
Our party of four loved the ambiance of the afternoon tea at Matfen Hall. The food was good quality with a good range of sandwiches and mini cakes. Our only request would be to consider the cost, especially when so many places are now offering afternoon tea for less than £20 a head.
Always enjoy our food here, its our favourite place.
We dined three consecutive evenings in the Library restaurant at Matfen Hall in June 2019. The menu was varied and we enjoyed all of the food we had. The scallop and veloute starters, and beef wellington main course, were our favourites - our compliments to the chef. The service was exceptional from booking at reception to the waiters on duty. We return to Matfen Hall time and time again because we are never disappointed.
Absolutely superb experience! We think that your establishment provides the best quality, value for money with attentive service afternoon tea in Northumberland
Lovely as always
Delicious food, very good choice and superb service- would highly recommend.
Beautiful and beautiful service
The quality of the food was excellent, however we struggled to find a starter or dessert to our tastes on the limited menu. The atmosphere in the restaurant was nice, but I’ve marked it down as the table we were sat at in the lounge while they took our order had crumbs and bits of the previous people’s nibbles all over the floor which wasn’t a good look. The service was poor and inattentive for the money charged. They forgot our drinks, left us sitting in the lounge with nibbles but no drinks for 20mins, we only got them when they said “would you not like some wine?” once we got to the table and we reminded them we’d ordered it half an hour ago (they also forgot the side order of people sitting behind us), we waited ages for them to ask if we wanted anything else or the bill and gave up and walked to them. 10% Service was added automatically which went in their favour as we wouldn’t have left 10% for the service we had.. I know we could’ve had it removed but didn’t want to make a fuss. Not directly related to dinner, but we were in the same restaurant for breakfast the following morning and were shocked to watch as the waiters reset the tables when guests left by just wiping the crumbs off the table cloth onto the floor. A dirty table cloth and crumbs on the floor is not acceptable for a 4 star hotel 2 AA rosette restaurant.
We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was lovely and plentiful, the service was very good and the staff friendly. Nice atmosphere without any loud booming music. The value for money was excellent. We enjoyed it so much, we have already booked for the next one in June and have recommended it to friends and family.
There was a wedding party in the Vault area with a band playing. The noise from the band came into the restaurant, until the library door was closed.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Matfen Hall and will definitely be coming back.
Outstanding. Great food, served hot, by first-class staff.
We, my wife & 5yr old son; had afternoon tea booked for 3:15 on a Sunday. We were advised this was the earliest sitting we could have due to Sunday lunches but to arrive 15 minutes earlier - so we did. We were told upon arrival by one member of staff to go and wait in the drawing room. So we did. After 15 minutes I spoke to another member of staff about our booking and that we’d not been seated yet. He took us through the the dining room and offered us a table for two. There was clearly three of us so we declined and he escorted us back to the drawing room and said he’d collect us when a bigger table became available. He didn’t. At 20 past three I spoke to a third member of staff who promptly took us through again to the dining room and sat us down at a suitable table. They took our order then told us they would be a 20 minute wait as a wedding was being served next door. A little over 35 minutes later we were served. The food was excellent. The service & organisation of the many waiting staff - terrible.
Excellent dining experience, starting with pre-dinner drinks & canapes in the drawing room to fabulous four course dinner in the library.
Best steak ever
Service once in the Library was excellent. Food was very fresh and tasty. Liked the fact we had a choice of what sandwiches came with our afternoon tea. Champagne was lovely. Was a little quiet in such a large room but had a lovely window seat with views. Would definitely return. Service again in the Conservatory not the best unfortunately. Had to stand a while to be assisted. Arrived there first in error and was then told afternoon teas were served in the Library.
The food was excellent, the service was excellent, we were very pleased with the whole dining experience.
Fab place, wonderful staff. One of my favourite places to go.
Beautiful food and brilliant service. Thanks so much.
Food was very good but quite rich - possibly lighter options would be good. We might have had another meal in the restaurant if there had been more lighter options
Wonderful surroundings and atmosphere. Very good food and friendly attentive service.
A proper afternoon tea made and served with care and skill
Welcoming and friendly staff. Amazing food.
