Opened in 2002, L’Enclume’s idyllic riverside location in the historic village of Cartmel is the perfect setting for Simon Rogan’s distinctive culinary style.
The restaurant is a relaxed dining space with white-washed walls and minimally laid tables from which L’Enclume’s dishes can be best enjoyed.
The whole experience is food as art. The portions, the presentation, even the crockery, are all aimed at encouraging you to give your attention to the food; to be mindful of each spectacular mouthful. I couldn’t afford to dine like this regularly but if you think of it like going to hear great music, see a major art exhibition or even watch premier league football then the pricing seems proportionate.
My wife and I have just enjoyed our first visit to L'Enclume, courtesy of a gift voucher from two of our daughters. It was a great pleasure to inform them that their present to us was a resounding success. I was able to advise them that the cuisine with wines to match had been a real treat. The creative invention in the dishes offered was a masterclass and a gustatory delight. The service was ever attentive but not intrusive. Questions asked were knowledgeably answered and helpful to our enjoyment of the experience. The evening commenced with welcoming smiles and we were smiling even more broadly by the time we departed. L'Enclume, it was a triumph, thank you.
An outstanding dining experience. Impeccable presentation and personal service. Thank you to everyone but particularly to Gosia for her meticulous organisation when booking.
It was all about the food. A restaurant without ambience or atmosphere and staff frightened or incapable of interacting with diners. No heating, no fire, no windows, no soft furnishings, no table cloths, no cushions. A sommelier whose attitude could turn wine to vinegar and servers who we found difficult to understand. No doubt your food was good but a dinner out with friends should be more than eleven teaspoonfuls.
Easily one of the best dining experiences we have had!
Really lovely restaurant, with great staff. The sparkling English wine recommended by the waiter was perfect. Our meal was lovely, although very rich, and more than enough to eat. Would definitely recommend this as a lovely treat.
Service was terrible but not in usual way. Service was at pace of a fast food restaurant. Had staff trying to clear plates before placed my fork down on multiple occasions. A couple of the dishes were divine but the whole evening was ruined as an event due to the ridiculous service. I appreciate they were trying to serve four tables as a batch but the timings were terrible. By a long way our worst Michelin star meal and there are many places in the north providing tasting experiences offering far better value and more enjoyable experience.
A memorable meal in a relaxing setting. Thank you for the wonderful tasting food with great service. Fabulous.
Thank you for making my birthday so magical Reputation well deserved 5star plus
We also really appreciated Mr Rogan helping us find the pub car park next door😂😂
Lovely dining experience that lived up to expectation. Even when one course was sub-par we were quickly offered a replacement and something extra to make up for it. Female sommelier was really engaging and knowledgable and made the wine flight a no-brainer
Our fourth visit with a totally new menu didn’t disappoint. Exceptional and delicious food and wine flight makes this a very unique experience albeit ridiculously expensive. However, it’s a real treat to indulge and we will definitely return especially since the Rogan & Co restaurant has raised its game to complement L’Enclume, setting you up for a wonderful visit. Our only BUT concerns the very vexing car parking issues - surely Rogan could acquire a plot close by where it’s guests could conveniently park without charge? The racecourse ANPR controlled parking is a bit of a walk away and a pain especially during inclement weather or perhaps even worse when a race meeting is on or at peak times in the summer.
Wonderful food and staff as always. In fact L'Enclume just gets better Thank You all
As always, wonderful experience; lovely entertaiment by excellent team, delicious food in combination with well chosen wines
A wonderful meal, with exceptional service. We really enjoyed celebrating my mother's 75th Birthday here. The tasting menu was excellent, as always, with a particularly impressive duck course. There was only one course that was a little underwhelming, which was a vegetarian dish containing miniature turnips; one understood where the chef was going with the concept but the dish never really arrived at a glorious destination. The signature wine flight was full of impressive wines, a noteworthy Champagne and an exotic Saki, however, unfortunately, none of the pairings were particularly memorable. The delightful Thomas looked after us from the moment we arrived until we left and it is always a pleasure to see his charming smile and to feel his warm welcome. In summary, a wonderful experience which is always guaranteed to please. However, do be aware that there are equally impressive, if not superior, restaurants in the North West of England, which are easier on the wallet!
Superb dining experience all the staff were a joy to watch and I applaud you all
We had the most amazing lunch - I enjoyed every moment. I can’t think of a highlight as it was the meal in its entirety that impressed me. Each course seemed to float majestically into the next, wowing me with every mouthful. The staff all seemed to be part of an incredibly well choreographed spectacle. They were there when needed, but never in the way. Bravo!
Wonderful experience. Surpassed expectation in everyway. Attention to detail was hugely impressive. The food was fantastic, memorable and interesting. The staff were floorless and made our anniversary one we will treasure for years to come. Thank you to all at l'Enclume!
First visit to L'Enclume, but it certainly won't be the last! The quality of the food surpassed my expectations and the paired wines complemented each course very well. All of the staff who dealt with us were absolutely brilliant and a credit to the owner and management. Looking forward to the next time already!
Just unbelievable in every way. Not sure how we will top this one. Thank you
Top class food and even better service. Faultless lunch. Worth every penny.
Absolutely amazing experience. The food was as spectacular as expected but what really made the evening was the exceptional staff. Unfortunately we didn’t remember names of staff but the Scottish gent was brilliant, as was the waiter from Liverpool and the sommelier. Really made us feel comfortable and all had a great knowledge of the food and wine served. They really made the evening a 5* experience.
Staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and just the right level of hands on to make customers feel super special. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
The staff combine professionalism with a friendly attitude and given the creativity of the food provide a delightful evening. A magic night out. And the taste? - Wow!
