Opened in 2002, L’Enclume’s idyllic riverside location in the historic village of Cartmel is the perfect setting for Simon Rogan’s distinctive culinary style.
The restaurant is a relaxed dining space with white-washed walls and minimally laid tables from which L’Enclume’s dishes can be best enjoyed.

Service was great and lovely atmosphere. Unfortunately, despite checking ahead of time whether you could cater for someone who doesn’t eat fish or seafood, you severely disappointed. Out of the 11 non desert dishes, 7 were seafood, which even for my partner who enjoys seafood, was a little over the top. I would have liked to have seen you use some of the fantastic meat reared in the Lake District and created a more balanced menu. The alternatives I was given for these 7 courses was almost a joke... replacing caviar with pear, and simply removing lobster from the dish is not really what I expected when paying £155 a head... a little more thought would have gone a long way or at least having the foresight to adjust the charge to account for this. The only meat provided was pork, which was lovely, but I felt it there should have been a little more variety. Use what is around you, stop trying to be overly pretentious with dollops of caviar and piles truffle covering a sliver of lettuce (the lettuce dish was lovely, but truffle completely over-powered it). Frankly I was quite excited to come, and I ended up leaving hungry a little pissed off and underwhelmed. My only solace was that our visiting wasn’t for a special occasion, as at least we had a laugh and it didn’t ruin what should have been a lovely evening.
The food (perhaps as expected) was exceptional, utterly faultless in every course. What we hadn't expected was how good the service would be - it was attentive, friendly and informative. The staff made us feel welcome and at ease immediately. The attention to detail in every aspect of the meal was outstanding.
A great experience in Cartmel, faultless. Service exceptional, food amazing.. Loved the bread and dripping, a wonderful throwback to childhood times far away.. The makerel, the hen of the woods and the wasabi cabbage were particular stars for me and I actually laughed aloud at the cheese ice cream dessert when it started fuming! The soft drinks flight was a revelation. All in all, tremendous.
We dined during the races and your very lovely staff ensured we got home safe - absolutely fab!!
Incredibly friendly welcome and the service was fantastic. All the staff were very amenable and knowledgeable about the food and the sommelier was a delight. We had the most enjoyable lunch and it was a truly memorable experience for our son's birthday.
A real treat....fantastic food. Welcoming staff who are all really knowledgeable about the dishes. Service exceptional but never overpowering. One for everyone's bucket list!!
Fantastic!!!! Amazing!!! What else can I say. It was our 40th Wedding celebration ...It was perfect. I am not adventurous regarding fish courses. I had 4 courses they were brilliant. Will be back in 40 years time!!!mmm
A fantastic location in the picturesque Cartmel village. Fantastic food, and great service, especially our sommelier who was both knowledgeable and funny (we are going to try and make the milk oolong kombucha). The 8 course tasting menu (the shorter of the two on offer) was a great mix of unusual ingredients and produce form the farm: which we had visited before our lunch. Overall the truly memorable experience.
Overall the meal was great, we both agreed the best dishes where some of the best we have had anywhere (hen of the woods maybe my personal favourite from any restaurant and I don’t like mushroom!) but some of the other courses where lacking (raw mackerel and the anvil both underwhelmed). Also the service from some of the staff was very robotic (female staff) but from others was exceptional (Scottish lads) which highlighted the poorer experience more. I’m being picky but also honest. I would really like to come back in another season and see how the menu changes.
i felt like the choosing of wine was rather complex and i didn't particularly enjoy my £75 bottle but didn't feel that i could comment as i had chosen it...how could you improve this part of the somelier process, could i have tasted some samples at all before choosing???

The whole experience was amazing, the staff were superb. This was our first experience of Michelin star dining, and felt a bit apprehensive, this was a one off experience for my husbands 50th birthday. But the food was nothing like I have ever tasted before the scallop dish was the highlight. The staff are a credit, they put us at ease, were so knowledgable about the food and wine. I really liked the chefs coming out to explain the deserts, a really nice touch. We will never forget the whole experience. Thank you to everyone involved x
Wonderful meal - well balanced flavours , interesting and enjoyable non alcoholic drink flight which matched food perfectly. Good advice on wine choices. Outstanding service from charming staff who were attentive without being intrusive - for fine dining and locally based ingredients would be very hard to improve . Thank you

Outstanding in every way. A beautiful setting and a totally unassuming venue with an exceptional level of attention to detail despite the relaxed atmosphere. Tasting menu (dinner) was faultless and the accompanying wine flight very good. Well done to everyone involved on an exceptional experience.

Don't like pushiness of your follow-up email - if you have enough confidence in your restaurant, you will know that people will come to you on special occasions or when they want to - they do not need to be "incentivised". Having said that, our visit was amazing and we may be back when we can afford it again!! Staff fantastic and food exquisite.I have not rated the "recommend" question because I would never recommend anything to anyone. Everybody has such different tastes.
