Our flagship venue, Howies Waterloo is set in a beautiful Georgian building at the foot of Calton Hill. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Waterloo is perfect for a quick bite, leisurely lunch, relaxed dinner and parties!
As a frequent visitor to Edinburgh I am a,ways looking for somewhere reliable to eat out. On previous visits I found Howies to offer good food and service in a good location so when planning my latest trip I booked ahead. Unfortunately my experience was extremely disappointing. The welcome I received was “ Luke warm”, my salmon starter course arrived but was not cooked all the way through and I was unable to eat it. The waitress removed it and presently brought another portion, sadly this was even worse than the first portion. I was offered an alternative but by this time my partner had long since finished his starter and was waiting for the main course. By the time my main course of Venison Casserole arrived I was very hungry, sadly I was very disappointed as the casserole was made up of mainly carrots in gravy with a few raw mushrooms and only three small pieces meat- two of which where mainly fat and sinew and therefore inedible . When the bill arrived I found that I had been charged the full price for the two course meal despite the fact that I had only one. When I mentioned this to the waitress she took off the £1 charge for the bread we had eaten. Very disappointed in our recent visit to the restaurant and will probably not return.
Game terrine was a bit dry.
We had our Christmas Party meal here again and everyone had a great time. We had the use of the private dining room and the food was very good. Thanks
General service fine, waitress (Polish lady) exceptional :)
Excellent value for money, great food and service
Had a lovely meal. Staff were attentive despite being very busy.
This was a lovely meal, food was good but not excellent. Just one thing I noticed, the staff must have been on split shifts and they were sleeping in the hall on tables outside the room where we had our meal. Just looked a bit like a homeless shelter. Having owned hotels, we would never have staff sleeping where there are customers.
The food is excellent and always piping hot. My husband loves the Cullen Skink starter and the Venison casserole main. Service is always efficient and with a smile.
We are a group of 12 friends who dine in Howies frequently and the service, food and value for money is exceptional. Even at the festive period the great Standard is maintained and often exceeded, always our first choice for dining in Edinburgh.
Had lunch with 5 friends on Saturday. All of us really enjoyed our meal-& all agreed it was amazing quality for the price. Sorry I can't remember the name of the waitress who served us, but thank you for great service. Will be back in the New Year!
Food and service was excellent.
A fantastic evening, the staff were wonderful and helped sort out a slight mishap with food quickly. Looking forward to coming back soon!
Dear all, We all can't thank you enough for the fantastic night we had at Howie's (Waterloo Place) on Friday for our team Christmas night out. The meal was absolutely delicious, everyone commented on how much they enjoyed it, also the service was outstanding, you really couldn't do more to make our night any better. This was out second year at Waterloo Place and this year even exceeded the last. Thank you all and Merry Christmas to you all. xx
Fantastic night, excellent food and service brilliant.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Good menu selection. Lovely building, but high ceiling and lack of fabric furnishings made it noisy at times with large parties in, although this did not seriously impair the overall experience. Will definitely return!
wee bit rushed - not a lot of time in betwen courses but given time of year maybe not normally like that
I was there with a large group for a Christmas lunch, everyone enjoyed themselves, the food was very good and service faultless. In comparison with other central Edinburgh restaurants who are able to accommodate large groups Howie's is excellent value for money, I will certainly use Howie's again.
We had a great day, and the food and service were fabulous. The restaurant was busy, but this did not take away from the attention we were given.
Lovely as always
Great Christmas lunch in lovely setting
Delicious food served by efficient, friendly staff. We took our own wine and paid the corkage which was reasonably charged. The restaurant was very Christmassy and atmospheric. We usually book each Christmas for our team Christmas do! See you next year! 😃.
As always thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Wonderful service. Food soooo tasty and great value for money.
Good food, great service. One of my favourites.
We had a lovely lunch at Howies on 13th December. My daughter had booked lunch as a treat for my 70th birthday and although they were really busy with office Christmas parties, we were extremely well looked after by our charming waiter who even managed a candle in our banoffee desert.
After dining in the restaurant many times, I had a very bad experience this week. I had booked the table from 6.30pm until 8.30pm but we were told we had to leave at 8.00pm, after ordering dessert because a party had booked exclusive use of the restaurant and were arriving earlier than scheduled. We were embarrassed and are not the sort of people to kick up a fuss so started gathering our things together. Everyone else had left so I’m not sure if they were also asked to leave. We still had over half a bottle of wine left so the staff said they could move us to sit under the stairs in the hallway until we finished it. This was drafty and obviously had no atmosphere. We were surprised when our dessert that we were told we couldn’t have actually arrived but we had to eat this under the stairs as people in the large group arrived and stared at us. While we tried to look on the bright side and not let it ruin our evening, it was very disappointing. My colleague and I work from home and this was our work Christmas night out. While the bill was covered by the restaurant, it is not enough for me to want to return. I wouldn’t trust that we wouldn’t be removed again if a large group arrived. Not a good way to treat customers who have been coming to your restaurant for over 10 years! And even worse that this happened at Christmas.
