About House of Darwin
We had an idea, sat across the table in our favourite bar, to do something fantastic with a village pub. We wanted somewhere friends could come and get together, enjoying a great variety of drinks and food, inspired by seasonality and individuality. Honest food, friendly service and comfortable unrefined surroundings.
Your home from home and our dream realised. Welcome to door No.221 House of Darwin.
A nice friendly welcome cosy atmosphere beautiful well presented food a great environment for a special evening out
We have absolutely loved it every time we have been. We have eaten here for lunch, evening meals and Sunday dinner with the kids and each time the food has been fantastic. Really proves they know what they are doing! Now a firm family favourite and we hope to keep coming back.
Table for 16 to celebrate my wife's birthday. Booking was simple & all staff very helpful & accommodating. On the night, Carla & Chelsea were very attentive. Food was delicious. We were sat on the mezzanine floor, which is nice for a slightly more private/intimate family meal. Will definitely be returning 😊
Perfect evening out.
Great food and drinks. Would definitely book again
Enjoyed my first visit. Sunday lunch was good Look forward to trying the main menu next visit. Thank you for looking after us
Fantastic night thank you.
Sorry, did not enjoyed our evening out. It was very noisy, to hot. Long waiting time and waiter forgot to write down all the food and drinks we ordered which added extra time to wait. And I am not the one who usually complains.
I know it is a fashionable thing to have dim lighting but perhaps to make up for it you could possibly use a bigger and bolder print on the menu. The vegetarian main choices seemed more limited than before the refurbishment too. The pub was busy but the service (waiting for orders to be taken and to pay the bill) was slow. The food we had was lovely and we had an enjoyable evening.
Hi Catherine, thank you for the great review, We will get to ironing out those creases in service and look out for our Autumn/winter menu at the end of October for other choices of vegetarian dishes. Sincere thanks, Iain MacPherson General Manager
When we 1st arrived it took a while for us to be acknowledged even though the restaurant was relatively quiet. Menu choice is limited despite set menu. Service during meal was ok. Food itself again ok but perhaps a Iittle overpriced - dessert selection was limited and not varied so we didn’t order any. It’s a shame as when it 1st opened the menu was actually better then?
Dear Mr Pearn, Thank you for the review, we really appreciate your constructive feedback and will look into how we get that 5 star review from you. Please say hello on your next visit, it would be great to meet you properly. Kind regards Iain MacPherson General Manager
Food a bit expensive I think there. Could be a wider choice on the menu I think it would be a good idea to add some pasta dishes to the menu.
Hi Cheryl, thank you for the review, We will discuss your feedback at the next Menu review for Autumn/winter. we look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Kind regards Iain MacPherson General Manager
Well done guys, it’s what Derby needs out of the city. Best food for miles.
Hi Julie, Thanks for the vote of confidence! see you again soon! Kind regards Iain MacPherson General Manager

Had my husband's wake a everything was just perfect staff very obliging nothing too much trouble food fantastic overall it just topped the day thankyou a much cheaper than most places a their cold food this was hot food excellent
Our favourite local! Service and food never fail!
This was our second visit, just one week from our first. We had a lovely dinner and we will definitely be back. I enjoyed my grilled duck breast with all the trimmings. I will say that the rocket salad with Parmesan shavings was a bit too salty so other than that, I enjoyed my meal. The ambiance is great and I am looking forward to trying the variety of flatbreads.
Amazing place! I’ve been coming since they opened and it’s gone from strength to strength. They’ve recently renovated the dining area and it’s beautiful. Highly recommend to anyone, never had a bad meal or drink here!
Went out for a Birthday get together and the food and service were absolutely excellent. I couldn't recommend the House of Darwin any higher as we had a great meal and time. During the meal we had 1 issue which was dealt with immediately and totally satisfactory by the Bar Manager. Excellent, we will most definitely be going again.
Only faults pork and lamb very tuff on the date we attended
Lovely food , excellent service
We had to wait almost 30 minutes for our table to be ready, with 2 small children this was a little longer than we expected. Staff were friendly and helpful and very attentive. We all had the Sunday roast and although the majority of the meal was good, there could of been a bit more gravy on the plates and the veg especially the broccoli was very hard. The dessert menu didn’t really cater for all of us and the portions were quite small. The main thing we wasn’t too happy with was the service charge of £11? We wasn’t aware of this before and although the staff were good, the overall price made it a little steeper than what we thought we should of paid. The new decor is lovely though and we would like to come back as it’s our local. Room for improvement I’m afraid though.
A visit spoilt by poor service and lack of communication. Due to a limited selection of rose wine, a preference for a sweeter product was greeted with “we only sell proper wine here” We ordered our food at around 7:30pm but received nothing. At 8pm after asking the waiting staff how much longer food would be, we were told “another 5-10 minutes” We would have preferred to be told that there were delays for food to be presented - or even that our order had been overlooked (possibly) and an apology given ... The food is of good quality - attention to the customer must improve if this establishment is going to maintain the higher end positioning that is being attempted. Many people are still tentatively visiting but it’s being initially based on the old “hungry horse / Golden Pheasant” reputation that has been attached.
Another lovely evening spent with Ian and his team, looked after by Chelsea who was aptly attentive. Wonderful food and atmosphere and really like the new decor. Great having this establishment on our doorstep, keep up the good work!
This was the third time we have been in as many weeks we have brought friends with us because the food is first class and the staff are warm and welcoming outstanding all round highly recommend
