About Hooden Smokehouse & Cellar
A traditional family run 17th Century English pub, with log burners, beams, serving an american smokehouse menu. Including our own recipe 16 hour brisket and burnt ends, 14 hour pulled pork and soft and juicy ribs, and much much more. We have an extensive garden that can cater for well over a hundred people, on nice days we will have the BBQ and wood burning pizza oven fired up and ready to serve delicious fresh pizza and BBQ meats. All this washed down with a great selection of fine wines, real ales and a good selection of other draught beers.
Came for a family birthday, all meals were delicious. I had the lamb rump and it was cooked to perfection. Service was great , highly recommend
Very friendly and well executed social distancing
Highly recommend, good service food was excellent will definitely go back again
Turned up 10 minutes early and asked to wait no problem, sent into wooden lean too with a drink, no seats, waited another 25 minutes and table still not ready! People coming in after us and got seated, we left and had a meal somewhere else
Great meal as always. The staff were amazing considering they were short staffed. Well done to them especially Jess who managed to keep a smile on her face despite running the restaurant single handed.
Really enjoyed our meal, food was delicious! Felt like a safe environment considering the strange new world we’re living in at the moment! Defiantly will be returning again soon!
We waited a long time for the waitress to take drink order as she was on her own serving the whole restaurant the food was very tasty but they sold out of most things on the menu the dessert list was awful not much choice but overall was good
Lovely meal, great staff. Beer was good. Will be visiting again
What a really lovely afternoon. The meal was cooked perfectly to our requests and the Staff were very attentive. We were a bit apprehensive about going out for a meal during these difficult times but, we were put at ease as soon as we arrived. Greeted by the Manager who explained to us about all of the new measures that have been Implemented. All of the staff have clearly been trained on the new measures Which also added to our relaxing and enjoyment. We would certainly recommend this lovely pub if you want a really good meal in a lovely setting with attentive staff. 10 out of 10.
Incredible food and excellent service from Jess
A great pub with a lot of character and atmosphere. The inside is cosy and outside has a big beer garden with a bar in summer. There is also a separate seated area with big screen for sports. This place has always been a favourite and it's great to see it open again now the Covid restrictions have been relaxed. It was missed during lockdown!
Lovely little pub, one of the best rib eye steaks I’ve ever had, would definitely return.
Had an amazing meal, I'm a.good home cook so when I go out I expect no less and last night's meal was Ish class x
Fab service and food as usual but disappointed that, considering it was a “specials” night, you didn’t have any Blue Cheese and it was only 6pm.
Only thing that upset everyone was the service charge added to bill we always tip anyway so should be costumers choice
Great service, and great food. Will be definitely visiting again when we are next in Ashford. Highly recommended.
Having been in previously and enjoy a lovely Sunday lunch we came again with family. Very disappointed that by 2.30pm there wasn’t much available.. We all said we didn’t want cauliflower cheese apart from one so could we have extra roast potatoes and veg but this was ignored. The beef was very tough and we had to ask for steak knives as we couldn’t cut it. The parsnips were hard The sweet menu was rather sparse and the coffee machine broken.. Gravy was poured over the dinner rather than on the side. Such a shame as all previous visits have been lovely...
Food was tasty and atmosphere cosy. Service was slow however. Also some bones found in fajitas and no strawberries on the eton mess. But at the end of the evening we were given an apology and an explanation as to why the service wasnt great.
We ordered nachos as a starter but had our mains bought straight out, I didn’t bother to say anything because I felt too embarrassed. Then the waitress asked if we want any sauces, I asked for mayo and she bought ketchup - this time I asked for mayo which she did bring over in the end. Food was ok - standard pub burger and chips. When the waitress took our plates she asked if we wanted anything and I asked for the bill, she said yep ok, then 20 minutes later when I was sat with my coat on came back over and asked if there was something we wanted - yep, the bill still please! I requested a corner table if possible and was sat in the corner so that was a positive point. 2 burgers and 4 drinks for £30 so can’t really go wrong :) but wouldn’t book here again for a special occasion.
Quickly seated friendly staff and big portions left feeling very full Will definitely go back
Had the valentines steak for 2 with bottle of wine Excellent value and excellent steaks
Not overly busy as we had an early meal. The staff were excellent serving both our drinks and food. We ordered what we wanted and then (the Manager we assume) offered us an alternative which meant having more and for a cheaper price. Food was fantastic. My only request from the outset was asking if there was cheese and biscuits, which there were. So much I had to take some home. Well worth the visit. It did get busier as the evening progressed and the staff were on top of everything throuout.
Fabulous as usual. Food cooked to perfection and great service.
This was our second visit for a Saturday evening meal with the family. The place was packed but were shown to our table fairly quickly. It soon became clear that you only had one poor waitress who was run ragged but was cheerful and friendly. We had quite a wait to order so skipped any starters and just went for the mains as we knew we were in for a very long wait. As it happened, it took about 50 minutes for our food to arrive and had to order 2nd drinks directly from the bar. There was only one very busy barman on duty and this was about a 20min wait to be served. We also didn't want to hang around for dessert, fearing an equally long wait. Guests in my party enjoyed their food on the whole, ribeye steak (very nice) burgers and the pulled pork special. Boasting that you have imported a smoker from the US, and that the pulled Pork had been slow smoked...etc, I was keen to try some. Meat was tender enough but I couldn't detect any discernable 'slow smoked flavour ' at all. I regularly smoke my own ribs, chicken and pork shoulder at home in a cabinet smoker. I Also travel quite often to the USA on business and hols so have had 'the real thing'. In my own opinion, your pulled pork had no smoked flavour at all so was wondering if it had only been slow cooked and not properly smoked or smoked at all. The T bone I had was tender enough and cooked to my liking but was very thin. A decent T bone needs to be nice and thick! Would have been prepared to pay more for a 'proper T bone'. Also, just a small observation, the smoked garlic butter was just ordinary garlic butter. Again, made me wonder about your 'smoke house credentials'. On our first visit, I had the ribs and was disappointed. Not much better than the chains like Beefeater and certainly not better than my own smoked ribs I do in my own smoker. So had thought it was a one off and decided to give it another chance, with the 2nd visit last Saturday evening. So overall, I did not get the impression that there is anything 'Smoke House' about you, which is what initially attracted me to your establishment. You are a nice average pub restaurant but I wouldn't call you a smoke house. Would I come back again? Probably not. There's nothing overly unique enough (I thought the smoke house aspect was it..) to make me. Disappointing as I would rather support an independent local place than a chain.
