Cloisters is found in the early C20th part of the building. With a definite Art Deco feel, you will find the seating so comfortable, the atmosphere so relaxing, that you will not want lunch or dinner to end!
Here, modern European dishes are given a superior British touch. Ingredients are sourced as locally as possible and include Oysters from Mersea Island, Newbridge Mill Farm, Lexden beef, Dingley Dell pork and East Anglian vegetables. Accompanied by our carefully picked wines and seamless impeccable service, you will wish to return very soon. Open 7 days a week for Lunch and Dinner
Having been on a wonderful tour of this gracious refurnished building in the centre of Colchester, we took up GreyFriars’ offer to make dinner reservations at Cloisters. The reception and restaurant staff were superb, friendly, and efficient as was our welcome on arrival. The setting is also ambient and comfortable and on the Monday night we dined it was far from crowded. Our deal provided for a complimentary glass of some pretty good wine - Sauvignon Blanc and Dona Paula Malbec - and choices from the 3-course fixed menu. The starters we had were pretty good: cauliflower and truffles soup for my wife and a very good braised pork cheek bob bon with compote and purée for me. So far so good. Then, the problems: tough, tasteless, precooked pork chops albeit with a tasty sauce and puréed potatoes. Good thing we had sharp steak knives and the sauce was tasty! But, then, I thought just how tasty the pork chops are that I cook on a grill. How come a professional chef could not manage it? We finished with a pretty good sticky toffee pudding and plum and pear crumble and creme anglais - and a nice little plate of Bon Bon’s for my wife’s birthday, which was a nice touch. So, an otherwise please evening was marred by the main course. Yes, of course, we could have sent the pork back but then we would have had to wait another 20 or so minutes for replacements. For that reason, restaurants must get it right first time. Pity, as this restaurant has a lot to offer, particularly with its pleasant ambience and excellent wait staff. Should we give Cloisters another chance. It’s often a risk eating at hotel restaurants but, unfortunately, notwithstanding other favourable reviews, we have heard similar reports from friends about the poor food at Cloisters. So, I really don’t know.
My wife and I came for Sunday lunch. The staff and the food was exceptional. The woh factor. Will be returning very soon.
Excellent food choice. Beautifully presented in sumptuous surroundings. Even with two children with us - everyone had a great time.
We had afternoon tea as a gift It was a totally lovely experience Staff were very attentive Food and drinks were excellent
The service let the experience down. I prefer the food to be presented on the cake stand as opposed to coming separately
Promised much but delivered little. This was a special occasion that was ruined by the poor food and service. We clearly expected too much when ordering steaks which were not cooked as ordered and were told there were no more available. Clearly we were not going to pay for these. Nothing was offered by way of compensation for an evening ruined and our embarrassment in front of our friends from the USA who were treating us to a “special” meal.
All the staff were kind, helpful and cheerful. The food was very good, well presented and served promptly
Although only one other table of diners the atmosphere was lovely. Beautiful surroundings (clearly something special expecially in Colchester). All staff were attentative, polite and knowledgeable. All meals were superb. Will definitely make this a favourite destination. Coffee in the nar afterwards was relaxing and the background music throughout the evening was particularly nice.
Sandwiches and service were absolutely lovely. Our tea pots were never empty and the the coronation sandwich, in particular, was the best I’ve ever had. I really appreciated the refills on sandwiches. My only complaints would be on the pastries as they were slightly over-sweet. It could be preferences, but lighter sweets would compliment the strong taste of the ganache. Overall, it was a lovely experience. I would only suggest offering an option for switching out scones with currants, as we did not prefer them and unfortunately ended up wasting them. Thank you for such a lovely experience. We will definitely return.
Such a wonderful place. Third visit. Afternoon tea then gentlemen's afternoon tea then Sunday lunch. Will definitely visit again.
The whole experience was absolutely fantastic
very enjoyable afternoon tea for my mother in laws 80th birthday, staff couldn't be more helpful. food was amazing
Good service but a little broken at times by having several different servers. This made the experience a little impersonal. We was giving the wrong bill twice and our romance package allowance wasn’t removed. I also asked for mash with my steak and received both chips and mash which was a little embarrassing when our plates where cleared and I was asked if there was a problem with the chips.
Very quiet when we are ate so atmosphere was quiet on this visit. Staff always helpful. Food very good. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves & as I was celebrating my birthday the staff made it feel quite special.
Excellent food and good service in beautiful surroundings. Perfect
Fantastic service for our afternoon tea sat very good with our girls who had the princess tea. Lovely afternoon thank you
The food was excellent and enjoyed by us all. However, after booking online, I expected us to be dining in Cloisters. On arrival we were told we were in the Rose Room due to weddings taking place. The online booking should be adapted for these occasions. The service was extremely attentive initially, but after our food and drink order was taken, we struggled to get the attention of the waiting staff for the remainder of the evening. I understand 2 weddings were taking place, but I expect the same high level of service throughout the whole evening.
I had such a lovely time, we all really enjoyed our afternoon tea with you. Although we didn’t all have matching tea pots, I could not fault the food and overall experience. Our waiter Charlie was fab, very attentive and nothing was to much trouble for him.
Lovely atmosphere and well presented great food. Highly recommended.
Simply wonderful. From the beautiful table settings to the friendly and efficient staff & delicious food. Our afternoon tea was perfect.
To celebrate my wife's 60th birthday with her family, I surprised her with an afternoon tea. And we were all impressed with the standard of service and quality of food prepared for us from the choices from the afternoon tea menu, the staff were very friendly and very attentive to our needs and they even surprised her with a desert with a candle on the plate, which was the staff's idea, so a great big Thank you to all. Definitely will use Grey Friars again and I recommend this venue.
Excellent food and great service, will definetely visit again
Lovely meal, lovely venue would recommend for special occasions.
A great experience from the welcoming desk, through the cocktail bar and then the main restaurant. Will come back for future 'special events'
