About The Great hall and Restaurant at Ellenborough Park
Book now to enjoy Afternoon Tea in either the Great Hall or the Restaurant at Ellenborough Park
We previously - several years ago - had afternoon tea in the Great Hall at Ellenborough Park and really enjoyed it. Very sadly, our previous experience was not repeated on this occasion It was extremely disappointing for the following reasons: 1. One wall of the Great Hall has been replaced with a Glass Wall - so you can see guests walking by in their Spa Dressing Gowns. It really spoils the ambiance of the Great Hall 2. Staff were perfectly pleasant but seem to be doing their jobs "by numbers" - without paying proper attention - or thinking about - their "guests" needs. Examples: a. A couple arrived after we had been seated and given the types of Tea menu & were waiting to be served. They were then served before us while we had to continue to wait. b. There should have been one person permanently stationed in the Afternoon Tea area keeping an eye on guests needs. We had to go out to main Reception to ask for more jam. When there were staff present, they seemed to spend all their time on the Til inputting some sort of data. c. We weren't provided with Hot Water when the Tea was brought to us - we had to ask for this. d. We had to ask for two additional pots of tea - each time having to wait til we could find someone to get this. There should have been someone who would have proactively asked us if we wanted/needed more tea 3. Table and Cups The tea cups provided are industrial canteen-type very thick and very small. Presumably to minimise breakages. They should have been good quality bone china. The table we sat at had a staggered edged under the tablecloth - which meant things tipped if they were placed by the edge of the table. 4. Quality of Food Finger sandwiches. The bread was dry - it had been left out before being served. The bread was too thick & and there was very little filling and butter in each. This simply came across as being very "mean" and that the venue was seeking to spend as little as possible on their sandwiches. The scones were nice - but there wasn't enough jam and the clotted cream was to hard to spread easily. The Assam tea was very good Overall the cakes were a good quality. The "doggy bags" provided to take away uneaten food are a definite plus. SUMMARY The impression we were left with was that Afternoon Tea - at £28 each - is part of a business model - and a "cash cow". The sense you get is that management's view is that, to turn a good profit, you only need a few sandwiches & cakes and a nice room and you don't need to do much more. Management at the hotel need to take a hard look at how their staff interact with customers. Standards fell woefully short of what one would expect of a Luxury Resort. Our lasting impression is of the Industrial strength, very thick small tea cups. It seems customers can't be trusted with proper bone china teacups.
We stayed at Ellenborough for my partners 50th Birthday so a special celebration. The place the staff (especially Jonathan who served us Afternoon Tea and Breakfast) was just amazing however the food on the evening in the horsebox restaurant and breakfast was lack lustre and tepid in warmth. Dinner was extremely disappointing. The afternoon tea was lovely though and highly recommended.
Jonathan looked after us and he did a fab job. The afternoon tea was delicious, it was a nice relaxing afternoon.
We came as a family for Afternoon Tea and really enjoyed ourselves and loved the whole experience. The children then loved playing chess outside and playing on the huge swing afterwards!
Lovely afternoon tea. Fantastic service from all staff members.
A real treat, beautiful surroundings, delicious food. I can't wait to book another afternoon tea with you!
Lovely afternoon tea. Very expensive for what there was but nicely presented and tasted very good.
We had such a fantastic experience when we came for afternoon tea. We were greeted by Jonathan and sat in a lovely little nook just of the Great Hall, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Service from all the staff was excellent with Jonathan really going above and beyond to ensure we had a fabulous time. The food was delicious and as we could could not eat it all we even came away with a goody bag. We certainly will be coming back again, and we have already recommended Ellenborough Park to everyone we know!
Excellent tea and superb service from Jonathan and the team!
The waiter was amazing think hi name was Jonathan he couldn’t do enough to make the experience good
Wow factor from the minute you first set eyes on this beautiful historic building to when you check out ,the hotel is outstanding and the staff are a credit to you .
Well worth every penny and was a delight for three different generations
Food and staff on the day were really good. Unfortunately, it took 3 attempts to get the booking confirmed due to a poorly managed message system. Had afternoon tea in the Great Hall, but was totally smoked out due to the smoke from the open fire. Came out smelling badly of smoke and eyes watering.
The food was about delicious and the service was great.
We had a lovely afternoon tea for my sisters birthday. All staff were very friendly and welcoming and ensured that we had a great experience whilst following all the government advice. All the food was delicious! We will definitely be back x
My husband and I were finally able to enjoy our Christmas present of afternoon tea. It was well worth waiting for and the whole experience was excellent. We have been before and we will definitely be coming again. Thank you
It was a great afternoon. Nothing could really be added to it.
When booking the afternoon tea I phoned up to pre-order 2 normal, 1 vegan and 1 cheese only due to dietary requirements. The phone service was excellent and we were really looking forward to it for my mum's birthday celebration. On arrival we were shown to the library room as the other areas had already been set up for breakfast the next day (at 2.30pm). The food was a massive let down. The vegan afternoon tea only came with 3 sandwiches where as all the others came with 4 sandwiches. The cheese-only sandwiches were dry and stale. When I tried to cut into my scone it was hard as a rock, dry and crumbly so I asked for replacement ones which luckily were delicious. They had obviously used the previous days stale ones to begin with. The other vegan "cakes" were all awful and I left everything except the odd mouthful to try them. The meat afternoon teas were fine but again the scones were the best bit - although they only got a tiny pot of jam and cream for 6 scones between 3 people - so again had to request more. The tea was fine except I was brought cows milk not soya as requested. The service was slow and we were constantly asking for replacements and drinks... until we were just left for over an hour. We didn't pay the full 12.5% service charge for obvious reasons but the whole thing was over-priced and a disappointed. Would not recommend if you are vegan or vegetarian, or if you want any sort of atmosphere.
Excellent staff, beautiful old house. COVID restrictions mean the rooms are stripped of all the niceties. Unfortunately when we stayed it rained constantly all weekend and spoiled our stay, but the hotel were very accommodating and allowed us to leave a day early without penalty. We would go again when we can get some better weather.
We always enjoy a trip to Ellenborough park, yesterday we came for afternoon tea for my Nannys 90th Birthday. Everything was lovely, even the sun shone for her, she really enjoyed her 1st trip out of the house for 6 months!
We had a fantastic visit! It was our anniversary and we felt very special by being given the “Snug” which was a lovely cosy room up on the balcony. The service was great, the choice of food for afternoon tea was lovely and the Apple jelly with blackberry mouse on top was an incredible concoction. The service was wonderful, everyone we spoke to was friendly and helpful. Will visit and recommend to friends.
We had a lovely afternoon tea here. Good variety of high quality sandwiches and cakes. Regular top-ups of tea and they gave us extra sandwiches, cream and jam for the scones when we asked. It’s a lovely historic venue on beautiful grounds. Service was excellent and Jonathan was very attentive
Had afternoon tea for 3. two of us had gift vouchers and one was an extra. I was very disappointed that the cost of the three teas at current price was added up and then the value of the vouchers was deducted we ended up paying for a very expensive third tea. not good!!
This was a 50th birthday present it was a lovely place the food was amazing and very enjoyable we will definitely be returning
