About Giggling Squid Cheltenham
The New Thai Restaurant Giggling Squid is a Thai food sensation. The simple, rustic, fresh food of Thailand. From street food to coastal specialties. Eat at Giggling Squid for startling flavours, amazing colours, and original textures.
Best restaurant for Thai food Everything is cooked from scratch by Thai chefs. Where practical ingredients are sourced locally. We have a love of seafood, and we have a wide range of dishes beyond that.
The best Thai food For lunchtime eating, our tasting 'sets' or our Thai tapas. An excellent way to try lots of different dishes in one go.
Need more staff
We were very excited to visit Giggling Squid as we’d heard so much about the chain. Unfortunately our waitress said she didn’t know the menu and couldn’t recommend a dish or something that was popular - which was a bit disappointing. The food we had was nice, but not great and I don’t think it’s good value for money considering the other restaurants we have in Cheltenham.
Had a lovely tasty meal, service excellent, wine good... just seemed on the pricey side
Beautiful restaurant and food was delicious: Our waitress was lovely, smiley and efficient to begin with... but as the evening became busier we had very long wait times with our plates being cleared from the table, ordering dessert and getting the bill. We did notice a few other tables waiting a long time too. However, it was exceptionally busy and being a new establishment we are sure this was just a minor problem that will smooth out once it's been open a while. It certainly hasn't put us off returning as we have already booked to return with a group of friends soon! We would definitely recommend the giggling squid as a great, unique venue and for a good variety of yummy food!
A pleasant experience but nothing outstanding about the food. Whilst my starter was a cold beef salad with Thai spices, it would have at least been assumed that the beef would have been marinated in the spices beforehand, allowing the flavours to infuse into the meat, instead of what seemed to be something out of a catering pack of cooked medium roast beef, (similar to the sliced products available from any supermarket) which was simply garnished with the spicy dressing just before serving. Very nice, if one is expecting English meat with a Thai dressing. My main course was a sizzling dish of duck breast with orange. Clearly the duck had not been cooked on the hot skillet, but likely heated in an oven & then just served on the skillet. There was no evidence of the usual caramelisation & flavouring normally associated with the sizzling method of cooking, the skin wasn't crispy at all, and there was no flavouring in the meat. The duck looked rather anaemic and, although it was cooked OK & not dry, it was like something cooked without any definite seasoning, & just having had some Thai flavouring added for the final service. Again, English food with a Thai dressing, which is definitely not reminiscent of anything one would experience in a reasonable Thai establishment. The accompanying noodle & beansprout side dish was similarly bland & lacking in flavour. With regard to the service, I personally find it presumptious (even a little rude) to receive a bill with a message to say I have been charged a 10% service fee on the entire bill. Is one to assume that the staff working at the restaurant are actually paid no wages whatsoever, and only turn up to serve customers in the hope they'll receive sufficient reward to enable them to eat for the next week? In some countries perhaps, but not the UK. These folks are paid a reasonable wage, and should not be depending on extra from tips earned without any extra incentive. If a server makes a real effort to ensure the diner's experience is something special, they will be rewarded for that adequately. If they don't, they will still be rewarded but perhaps to a lesser degree. Let staff make their own efforts to please customers - don't do it for them! Upon first glance through the evening menu, I decided that I would actually like to try each & every one of the items listed, but over a period of time and numerous visits. The issue of an assumed (although not compulsory) service charge being added to everything, including an already expensive bottle of beer, has made me think again, and although GS are unlikely to miss my business to any great extent, it's a shame to be feeling this way about the restaurant after only one visit. I have no problem in paying well for well-prepared food, but I'm less keen on paying for the presumption that the service will be exceptional, when it is at best just adequate.
Lovely, relaxed lunchtime experience with friends.
This was my first visit to a giggling squid after hearing fantastic reviews from friends and family. Giggling squid Cheltenham did not disappoint, everything about our experience was amazing. Would highly recommend to anyone who loves Thai food.
This was my second visit to the giggling squid in Cheltenham and I am not impressed. After ordering the sharing platter I only had great expectations. I had ordered the giant butterfly king prawn pad Thai which when arrived was little to be happy with. A brown grey mess on a plate with runny prawns and tasted of just salt. After speaking to the waitress as I left the entire of my plate after 1 spoon I could not eat any more. She spoke to the manager who refused to take it off our bill and offered an alternative. After this meal I was not trusting or wanting any more food. The manager did not come to the table but rather stood and pointed at myself on a number of occasion when talking to the waitress. However the waitress wa lovely and wish I took her name. I am very disappointed with the level of food and quality and will not be returning.
We have now been twice to the Giggling Squid and on both occasions found it to exceptional. Thank you.
Food is pricey but distinctly average.
Very good food but expensive. For example, I think charging £3.50 for Thai Crackers a bit much - these are often complimentary in other restaurants - especially when paying £100 for a meal. Whilst I acknowledge automatically adding service charge to the bill is something all restaurants are now trying to do - knowing full well that deducting it just looks mean - it really should be left to customers to tip staff directly otherwise it is just a way of increasing the cost of the food. I had previously been a number of times to the Brighton Giggling Squid, about 5 years ago and it was very reasonable - I guess you have to find a way to pay for the rapid expansion of the restaurant chain! I will come back as the food was very good, but it will only be very occasionally which is not what you probably want!
This was the best Thai meal I have had outside of Thailand!
Outstanding food and service.
We had a lovely time, and the food was delicious! We will be returning soon :)
5* food and service!!
The food was authentic and so delicious – we will definitely be returning!
Fabulous food and drink! If you haven't been then you must go. The staff are very helpful, polite and friendly. Will certainly be going again. Thank you 😊
An amazing evening which was enjoyed by everyone. Fabulous food and drink. Can highly recommend.
Absolutely lovely food, excellent service and a fab night. Thank you
Amazing service with fantastic food, recommended to all our friends, best by far in Montpellier!
Did not meet my expectations. Service was very good, but other than that very average. Not worth the prices charged- lots of other thai restaurants around which supersede this one
The meal was ok, food was a bit greasy. Altogether was somewhat underwhelming and was just another bog standard Thai meal. Some of the staff were also unsure as to what was what on the menu.
The food was absolutely fantastic some of the best Thai food I have ever had!!! *****
