About George and Dragon Clifton
The George and Dragon is a stylish country inn with a cosy bar, lovely restaurant and comfortable bedrooms - ideally located on the edge of the Lake District, in a lesser known part of Cumbria. A real foodie destination (claiming excellent reviews and awards), where much of the produce served there is grown by the owners at their sister establishment, Askham Hall (open to the public) part of their family estate (the Lowther Estate), just a couple of miles away. They grow a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs in the kitchen garden and in the surrounding fields and farm, their breeds of beef, pork and goat meat are traditional and slow grown. Game, including Roe Deer and Red Deer, are sourced on the Estate woods and moors as is partridge, pheasant, woodcock and duck which come from local game keepers. Their fish comes from the north west coast of Cumbria and occasionally from the local rivers. Cheeses and smoked meats and fish come from local suppliers. Nearby micro-breweries supply the local ales.
Photographs, prints and archive images on the walls tell the story of the owner's family estate's unique heritage and comfy sofas, richly coloured rugs, bare wooden tables, intimate alcoves and crackling fires make it a perfect place to relax and unwind.
The George and Dragon has eleven elegant bedrooms, all of which are individually designed and decorated, and have roll top baths or contemporary walk-in showers.
We have won numerous awards over the years including Taste of Cumbria.
Fabulous food, service and ambiance.
We haven’t been far over the last year ... having been previously good customers of the George and Dragon we looked forward to our meal out of lockdown... it was fab !!!! Food delicious... top marks for all aspects... we will be back 👍
We enjoyed our meals in the marquee, which was warm and still had a cosy atmosphere! The starters, mains and desserts were all sublime!
Fabulous service, amazing food, it was a cold day but sat in the marquee and the food was piping hot 😊
This was our first time at the George and Dragon and had a great night even though it was in the strange environment of eating al fresco in April!! GREAT food and lovely time had Thx
Our third trip to this restaurant. The food and service is always exceptional. Due to Covid restrictions we were outside and it was a little chilly but it didn't spoil our visit.
After reading reviews I would have hoped that better training would be given to staff on their manner. We found our waitress very surly, unhelpful and generally poor. It’s a shame as the food is excellent.
Great food as usual. Service disjointed due to COVID restrictions and distance to dining area away from pub. All in all a great afternoon, will be back.
Very welcoming and high standard of food and drink again. Outstanding service and great atmosphere.
Although due to covid it was outdoor dining ,booking to be in the marquee I thought it would be heated or at least enclosed on all sides. The food was great but due to not being in a warm environment it was disappointing .
Great food, marquee was very Covid secure, and great service. Thank you.
Really lovely food on a chilly evening at the beginning of May as we had to eat outdoors. Only suggestion was for perhaps some bread to go with the souffle.
We had an excellent outdoor meal, staff were very helpful. Good COVID safety . Food as always , excellent
Really friendly, lovely food.
Could do with having outdoor heating.
It was a really great evening. Fab food, friendly staff and a real treat after lockdown. Thank you
Great meal. All outdoors due to national restrictions but a good area set up with nice furniture and table decorations (small flowers etc). Excellent food and service. Would highly recommend.
The quality of the food and drink overcame the damp, cold breezy marquee to make this return from lockdown an enjoyable meal!
One of the best Sunday dinners I have ever had, top quality food really fast service! Will be going back
A very nice lunch under the circumstances of outdoor dining. Well done the team at G&D
Not your fault as it is times of Covid which we accept, however the outside tent was Freezing cold Saturday night, so cold we left with our desserts to take home. A heater in there would have made a difference and made the atmosphere more bearable I think. Food, Drinks, Service from staff top notch... Thank you
Couldn't have been happier, the food, drinks and service was top notch. Will be back!
A well established pub/restaurant where the food is always first class; albeit a reduced menu whilst dining outside. The staff are efficient and very helpful. Always a pleasure to visit this pub.
Some waiting staff were over familiar and not very smart
A lovely meal from the outdoor summer menu. The quality of the food was excellent. We were lucky and the sun was shining. The staff were friendly and professional. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.
