About Gandhi Restaurant
Gandhi Restaurant is Winchester's longest running Indian Restaurant. Since 1987 we have adapted to our customers' tastes and experiences to ensure we become one of the leading Indian restaurants through new benchmarks in food, ambiance and service.
Following our major new refurbishment carried out in July 2014, we have transformed the Gandhi into something a little extra special.
No matter what the occasion, we are confident that our atmosphere of relaxed elegance, exquisitely decorated interior with private dining, our charming staff and not forgetting our unique menus, will be something that needs to be experienced to be believed.
My partner and I really enjoyed dinner and we will return to Gandhi in the near future. Thank you very much, Mark.
Second time at Gandhi’s Restaurant as we live overseas. The staff are friendly and chatty and make you feel comfortable. The food is excellent and a fabulous choice. As a person who has a nut allergy I was pleased that dishes could be explained to me and that I was able to enjoy my food without worrying. I only wish that we had the same attention to detail in Singapore where I live. Hopefully we will be back again.
Tasty birthday curry, great quality as always.
First experience and the best Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to! Excellent service from start to finish, the food from starters to dessert were perfect too! The staff couldn’t do enough & the place has such a nice atmosphere! We will be back!
We as a group of 13 had a fantastic evening, We were greeted and shown to our table, and given our menus, and orders were taken for drinks and poppadoms with chutneys, The staff were all very attentive and catered to our every need, orders were then taken for starters and mains, The food was of excellent quality ,All cooked fresh and piping hot, The atmosphere was great to as the restaurant was fully booked, So all in all we had a great time and thank you all, See you again soon, kind regards from Pete willcocks and great friends.
I visit Winchester two or three times a year from Los Angeles - I have family in Hampshire and Wiltshire - we love to meet up at Gandhi and have never had a bad experience. Highly recommended.
Interesting menu of authentic Indian dishes, with modern gastro twist, expertly cooked. First rate service. Busy give.
Absolutely fantastic meal, great service and atmosphere.
Food and service was fantastic - would definitely recommend! Looking forward to my next visit :)
Made a special evening for my sons birthday
The food was delicious, served quickly in lovely surroundings. Who could ask for more?
Always friendly and great food
I am very sorry to give Gandhi a less than stellar review. The past two times that we were there, we'd been treated well, right from the moment someone was there opening the door for us. The past two times, we were seated and greeted with smiles, my chair was pulled out for me, my coat taken straightaway, etc. This past time seemed so strange. When we got there (we had a booking), the restaurant was empty, so we should have been smiled at, and seated quickly. Three separate times, in that empty restaurant, we gave our booking (why?), waited, and were finally seated. The table in the back had so very little light--I'm sorry--but even a candle would have helped--it just seemed dark and gloomy, not cheerful or even 'exotic'--just rather gloomy-- when other tables seemed 'under a spotlight' (not that we needed that, either!). We were lead to the table, the man immediately left, and being that it was a booth seating and our coats were not taken, we honestly had no where to put them except crumpled up against the window behind/beside us. We sat for ten minutes (empty restaurant, mind you) without menus or water, in too dark of an atmosphere, just sitting and wondering why we had nothing. Another man came over and said he'd take our coats, but by then, they were tangled and crumpled together, people needed to jostle about to get them, and it seemed less than elegant, and a bit intrusive. Dinner service seemed a bit slow, but never mind, we were not in a rush, even though we had plans to see a show--we did not complain or show any type of anxious feelings. I repeated again, and again (at least four times) 'I do not want spicy at all--please no spice--please make it mild coconut--absolutely not spicy in the least'--and yet, it came out spicy. When we got our naan bread--no exaggeration whatsoever--it was completely burnt and black on one side of every single piece. I asked kindly, 'I'm sorry, the bread is burnt, could we please have another batch' (this was directly said when the bread was placed on the table). The man actually had the nerve to argue with me--and to touch/handle the bread and then put it back on the table as if we were supposed to be fine with it. He said, 'Oh no...look...it's fine...it's always like that'. (WHAT? Why on earth would he lie or say such a thing? As if we don't know what bread should look like after years of eating naan bread?) I said it's not a bit charred--it's completely black and burnt, to which he added,'Well it's only burnt on ONE SIDE' (this, he said, while holding a piece in his hand and telling us 'It's fine--Just eat the one side'. That's when my husband kindly replied, 'Well, regardless, we'd like fresh bread please'. I felt my husband should have said it from the start--almost as if a woman's 'say' didn't hold weight. I also HATE (yes--HATE) when I spend a lot of money (alcoholic drinks, starters, seven people, expensive restaurant) when the waiter just hangs his hand over (and in front of others' faces) and shakes his hand, waiting for YOU to hand him your dirty plate! That is simply not ok--no class, no elegance, no style, no 'sorry' or 'excuse me'--just an attitude like 'work for me, give me your dirty plate'. When food was placed on the table, why oh WHY was it up to US to shuffle drinks around, worry about the poppadum basket and salt shaker etc., in order to make room while the waiter stood waiting for us to 'find room' on our table? It would have been nice, elegant, and right, for the waiter to have cleared things away first, made room, and then brought our dishes out. It really frustrated me, because I might expect and certainly accept this from a cheaper, or ordinary restaurant, but not a restaurant where I've booked, and spent a lot of money, and it claims to be special and upper class. There were several other things along the way...yes, things I could 'pick at', but will not state, because I will overlook them. But it truly tainted my impression of Gandhi. I'm sorry to give this kind of review. I had done nothing but talk about our upcoming night to the restaurant, and I felt so let down, right down to the moment we left (and all of us were SO kind, so patient, polite, and put up with things, that it seemed more frustrating that we almost weren't 'given points' for the 'work' we did or what we put up with). I'm sorry, Gandhi...but you'll need to do better with customer service, for us to return.
Really great food and service. Slightly expensive once you add in your poppadoms, rice, naan etc but more or less what you'd expect for a Winchester restaurant. Definitely recommend but keep an eye on the extras.
The table was ready and waiting when we arrived. Excellent meal and serivice.
Booking for 11 for a birthday. We were given the upstairs area which we enjoyed alone for most of the meal. Food was good but I’ve had better there before. Service was attentive and we were not rushed to leave which I have heard happen before. Would recommend and will be going back.
Superb as always :)
Great place to eat drink and be merry
Excellent food, service and atmosphere as usual.
We had a party of 7 on Christmas Eve. The food was wonderful, just as I remembered some 18 years earlier. The staff was very professional and able to answer all our questions. We did not feel rushed, the prices were very reasonable for the food and drink we ordered. I highly recommend for a wonderful evening.
Perfect! Service was second to none! Thanks Ghandi.
Great tasting food. Very efficient service.
As always, excellent!
New Years Eve meal 2017 - great food and service.
