About Fota Island
Fota Island Resort is one of the most luxurious 5 stars hotels in Ireland and provides a tempting selection of gourmet restaurants with excellent food to choose from, including fine dining at the delightful Fota Restaurant, or more casual dining in the surroundings of the Amber Lounge or The Spike Bar at the Clubhouse.
Afternoon Tea is served daily 12.00 - 17.00
Everything was 5 star quality as usual-the only negative would be the bar at night was a bit dead and would benefit from some live music. Service is as well excellent and the food was great. If you want more casual dining I would recommend the bar restaurant as the main restaurant is quite fancy (with quite small portions)
A great stay in a beautiful hotel.
We received a truly excellent service from Val in the restaurant and the food was enjoyed thoroughly by all of our group - everyone spoke about at what a high standard it was. Our entire group had a fantastic evening.
fabulous relaxing break
For the price paid it was disappointing to see so many children in the dining room at night. No background music , coffee machine flashing , breakfast tables set up without any division. Again at breakfast the dining room was overrun by children, not what I expected from a 5 star Hotel. Coffee was served by the cup from a jug, not an individual pot per customer. Overall I was disappointed and didn't feel we got value for money
Food was fabolous and really recommend the afternoon tea
Great weekend! Staff were so friendly and we had great meals in the hotel.
My wife and I had a wonderful relaxing luxurious visit to Fota Island. I'd highly recommend it. The staff were so friendly and helpful particularly Brendan Comerford. We'll be back !
Nice dinner, a little expensive
Beautiful location and the staff could not do enough for us
Wonderful resort with strikingly fantastic staff! Despite a mix up with our dinner order and some missing dressing gowns in our rooms, the staff's unique flavour of professional pleasantness meant that anything world be forgiven. The team is a credit to you. No availability in the spa a week before arrival was a shame, but I'll certainly be back and hope I can secure a treatment next time :) overall the resort is a real jewel in Cork's crown.
Very poor service and expensive food in Amber lounge. €11 for toasted ham&cheese sandwich with processed ham outrageous. Thai curry very nice but small portion and came with no side i.e. Nan bread. Must be the most expensive curry in Ireland ( shelbourne hotel €18 with side). Every time we order a sandwich we told the staff we did not want chips with our food, and every time chips came??On the one occasion we ordered room service, my wife ordered tea&toast, the toast came cold followed 10min later by the tea. Certainly not 5star service. The old amber lounge menue was still up in the lobby.Glass Shelf above bar very dusty and lounge seats outside amber dirty. I am confused as to what the amber lounge is, it's a cross between a bar and a restaurant with expensive food and very small portions. Not very comfortable for a relaxing no fuss food. Rooms very nice and relaxing, the one negative was dust coming out of ceiling lamp shade with the hairdryer on. On one occasion because we had enough of the amber lounge we went down to the golf club for some food, we were made to feel very Unwelcomed. There was a couple of functions on and it was like they didn't want anyone else there. So we left without eating. Hotel decor and grounds very nice, breakfast excellent. I spoke to the food manager before I left and told him my disappointments with the hotel.I found him polite and respectful. Kind regards Neill OHara
Our experience from beginning to end was outstanding. We were left wanting for nothing and were thoroughly impressed by food/drink & the service throughout our stay. We're planning our next visit already!!
We went to the restaurant for a special lunch to mark the final few weeks before one of my friends gives birth to her second child! Now I know this is a five star restaurant and I have no problem paying for five star food and service. While the service was excellent the food was not. The portions were tiny for the price, some food was cold and it took forty minutes for the mains to arrive and thirty minutes for the desserts. They brought out a diet coke that wasn't ordered and it wasn't used but because I was the last one to pay I had to pay for it anyway. I like being full after I pay money like that for a meal but I went home and had to order more food! Very disappointing.
Amazing staff Not so amazing room (149)
We had Sunday lunch in Fota Island. We were very disappointed with the quality of the food and thought that the meal was expensive and not good value for money. We paid nearly 50 euros for two mains and two soft drinks, no starters or desserts. We thought the choice of desserts was really poor - most had chocolate and/or nuts in them. Not everyone likes chocolate or nuts! We probably won't eat in Fota Island again.
Spending almost €600 a night for our stay for my partner's birthday, we expected service to be amazing and unfortunately it wasn't. Arriving on time to the prebooked spa appointment (but ending up being a few mins late by the time we changed) we were both then told immediately when we entered our respective treatment rooms that we "wouldn't be getting the full hour massage because we were late", which we both thought was unnecessary to point out since it was only a couple of minutes (and we wouldn't have noticed at all if it the massage was cut to 55 mins instead of an hour had it not been so immediately and explicitly mentioned), which was a bad way to start within only a couple of hours of arriving. We had a similar negative experience in the bar after dinner when (without being offered a menu) I ordered 2 cocktails. I noticed the more senior barman reprimanding the young man I ordered from and when the young man brought the drinks to our table, he explained that he was new and "just so I know for next time" he shouldn't have taken the order for one of the cocktails since it wasn't on the menu (in other words, I shouldn't order it again and should instead order from the preset menu next time.) Not the young man's fault as he was obviously told by the more senior barman to state this to us and I actually felt sorry for him being put in that situation by his boss, but I'd expect a 5 star hotel to accommodate guests with whatever drink they wanted without making a fuss...I was paying quite a steep price for the drinks after all (€25 for 2 drinks). I'm sure even if I ordered "off menu", there's still quite a hefty profit margin in that for it to not be an issue, but apparently not... In contrast, the door staff and the Asian waiter who served us for dinner on Sat night were attentive and helpful...these guys understand great service. The grounds were also beautiful, but unfortunately the two negatives in the spa on Sat afternoon and the bar on Sat night put a dampener on the whole experience for us. Compared to a recent stay we had in nearby Inchydoney Spa, the contrast in service was huge. Inchydoney couldn't do enough to make our stay special from the second we checked in, whereas some staff at Fota seemed to be more concerned with schedules and sticking to menus than thinking about the service to the customer. Breakfast was also very chaotic on Sunday morning (with us having to chase staff for service rather than them making themselves available to us). A minor inconvenience, but you'd expect a resort of this calibre to be better organised. Overall, I got the impression of staff who were overstretched and/or undertrained, or possibly under management scrutiny/pressure to keep schedules and stick to "management-approved" menus. I wouldn't recommend Fota Island Spa because of the above (and in fact have already stated this to many friends and colleagues who asked how the weekend went), which is a pity since it's much closer to where we live than Inchydoney and we had heard great things about it from friends who recently celebrated a wedding there. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but unfortunately Fota didn't meet our expectations for 5 star service with a smile. In future, I'll probably travel a little further to Inchydoney or Castlemartyr to get the superior service that should come as standard in a 5 star resort.
A great night out, nice food and relaxing time!!
Easy booking process as I booked via email. I had the booking confirmed very quickly and all of the correspondence with the hotel was in timely manner. Food and atmosphere was great - when we arrived we thought to ask for the window seat, but decided not to. And after the food came out we did not even look at the window once. Everything was delicious and we cannot wait to return. One small thing to pay attention - my last name was misspelled on two out of four emails from the hotel although it is a part of my email.
Fantastic food and very attentive service. Would highly recommend.
I arranged a family break at Fota. We all had a wonderful time. The rooms were lovely, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, the grounds and gardens beautiful and the food was excellent! I wish we had been able to stay longer, next time I will book a longer stay to make the most of the pool and spa facilities.
Hotel is in need of repair and refurbishment. The hallway and room the floorboards were very worn and creaking. Not what I would expect from a 5 star. Left feeling disappointed and not somewhere I'd recommend.
Pros Very nice newly refurbished rooms. Lovely Spa. Cons Dining in the hotel is expensive. Noise from a wedding party kept us up until 2am on our first night.
Delicious food served by v nice stall
Fantastic Food, facilties and service. Highly recommended an overnight for sheer luxury with a relaxed atmosphere. Staff were exceptional except for the Spa staff who seemed a little jaded and not necessairly happy to see us. However reception and service staff were very friendly and imppecable.
