For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Yummy selection Well spaced (timely) tapas- not all at once Sardines special and garlic prawns fab Tortilla selections amazing
Little less attentiveness or staff. You want to eat and not feel rushed. Finished and someone was hovering to take the plate. A good mark of a restaurant and staff is knowing the room. Judging when you can interrupt a conversation/clear. And telling a person ‘you want nothing, can I give you the bill’ is a no go. Let me enjoy the company and finish my drink.
The paella was amazing and the service 10 I’m back son : )
Great place, great food, great service.
Been a few times now and will keep coming back!!
Delicious food and great (and very friendly) service. The John Dory was one of the nicest fish dishes I have ever had.
Great meal as always
We go to Escocesa often for dinner as the food is incredible, but we went for NYE this year and I have to say I was rather disappointed. The menu was stripped back, which is understandable as they were fully booked, but the food just wasn’t as good as it usually is. I hope this is just because of NYE but I don’t think I’d go again for that evening, but I will be going back for a dinner again as I’m sure it was just the circumstances.
Couldn’t fault a thing Food and service both excellent
Delicious swordfish dish!
Exceptionally tasty food, as usual. We really enjoyed the orange wine as well. Thank you & see you again soon x
We had a lovely meal and a relaxed time. Food and service excellent. Many thanks
One of our favourite places!
Very good food and service but slightly expensive.
Awesome restaurant. Some more veg/vegan options would be great.
Food is great and service absolutely perfect. I do recommend this place.
Great menu, delicious food and lovely staff, my favourite tapas restaurant!
Amazing and delicious food, lovely atmosphere and super staff
The food was kind disappointing considering it’s a Spanish tapas , been to Spain all over few times but the food wasn’t even close to what I experienced last night in Escocesa. Was looking forward to trying the baby squid but turned out a let down, more batter scraps than actual squid.Mussels, garlic prawns lacked flavour. Sadly to say , the menu needs to be revised and improved.
Consistently good food every time. Look forward to going again as always!
A great local restaurant!! Lovely people running the show and wonderful food.
Excellent food prepared and served with great care and friendly professionalism. A lovely informal dinning experience at the counter watching dishes being prepared. Less positive about the atmosphere in the restaurant proper. The wines on offer are very good and well chosen but rather expensive.
Best tapas in town! 💃🏻
Escocesa confirms its high level of food quality, ambiance and service. At a honest price. In the London plethora of restaurants to choose from, being a Food lover and knowing well how to cook great food, it is at times difficult to find a place where you perceive the love for what’s being done. Escocesa is definitely one of those. Attentive service, tasty food, quality raw materials. The 4 stars on the Food and Drink are because I could not be happier to see Escocesa push their boundaries on innovation and finesse and take a Michelin star home. It would be deserved.
Stunning food, great wine, wonderful evening. Highly recommend.
