For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Always absolutely love the food and the service at Escocesa - my favourite restaurant in Stoke Newington
Excellent service & food.
Escocesa is our favourite restaurant, and so glad they’re back in action after lockdown! Everything about this place is top notch, and the food insanely good! We come here every date night and it’s magical - recommend you anyone!
Deliciuos food as always.
On top form despite the weird circumstances of the pandemic.
Super evening back dining post lockdown and Escocesa are doing everything right. Not only is the food great with fabulous produce but they are also taking health and safety seriously. Keep it up!
Excellent attention to detail on bio security with little or no impact on a great atmosphere. Good work Escoseca team.
Had such a lovely time here! Both food and service are excellent. They have taken extra safety measures post lockdown such as temperature checks and high hygiene standards to make everyone feel comfortable. Highly recommend.
Delicious food and drinks with excellent, attentive staff. They followed new dining out guidelines very well and made us feel really safe and looked after.
Amazing service and team that are so kind and lovely. The food was great and the wine was perfect. Thank you for another beautiful night!
My favourite local restaurant. Excellent food beautifully prepared.
So good! Great options on the menu, everything we picked was amazing, the vibe relaxed and the staff were pro’s. We’ll be back
Staff where attentive and always had a smile! So happy you are back!
Great food and atmosphere!!
Lovely food and even with Covid-19 precautionary measures in place, there was a good atmosphere. We certainly enjoyed the sherry, and the Spanish wine list was great too.
Incredible fresh seafood tapas, great friendly service. Couldn’t recommend more highly - we’ll be back!
I love this restaurant and was so happy to return to it after lockdown. I’ve never had a bad meal here; it’s always outstanding, and very authentic. This visit, it was suitably socially distanced, and the staff were meticulous about checking temperatures, providing sanitiser and wearing masks at all times.
Great to come back to Escocesa - food was good, service was great, everything ran smoothly in new Covid regime, and we all had fun.
A reassuring re-introduction to dining out during a pandemic.
Very good - standout dishes included the tortilla with prawns, the cheeseboard and the ceviche. I also think the restaurant has coped well with the new restrictions. Extensive precautions are in place, but all as unobtrusive as possible and didn't interfere with the overall experience.
A great little restaurant and obviously popular, as it was full on a Tuesday night. Nearly everything we had was very good or better. The mussels a la plancha and the asparagus, green beans and mushrooms were outstanding and we couldn't help ourselves but to have more of the delicious bread to mop up the delicious accompanying sauces. Service was relaxed, friendly and attentive.
Excellent service - friendly and dedicated, great atmosphere
Wonderful and even with Covid safety measures now in place was a lovely meal and great service - thank you!
Food was delicious and service was friendly as always
