For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Good food and great wine list.
Love it here.
Very attentive and helpful waiting staff
Scottish/Spanish tapas - brilliant. Original taste temptations, beautifully served. Don't miss the stuffed squash.
Everything was very good except some portion sizes too small (even for tapas/small plates)- the steak in particular. There should be 3+ pieces instead of 2! Also the aubergine and courgette flower. All were delicious however and the wine we chose was v nice.
As good as ever. Thanks!
Perfect food and atmosphere!
This is our second visit and we love it, good portions and excellent food. The service and atmosphere was great. The prawns and pig cheeks were particularly good. The only very minor negative was they the squid was particularly fried (less squid than the fried coating)
We felt very much like we were being rushed through. After ordering a number of dishes everything came in one go within about 10 minutes, meaning that we had no room on the table for all the plates, and felt like the restaurant wanted to get us through and clear the table quickly. The restaurant is not inexpensive, and this kind of service was disappointing.
Food (Black paella & tapas) was great - stuffed courgette flower was the star! Service also great, will definitely be back
Sorry. Nothing was delicious. But staff was super lovely!
Great dining experience
I always love coming here. Great tapas and the only place in London where I've found that some of the pimientos de Padrón are actually hot! Tables slightly too cramped in. My neighbour and I were bashing elbows.
Great food wine and service, a little pricey
Friendly and helpful staff, delicious food (the pork cheek was amazing!), nice ambiance and good value for money. We really enjoyed our visit.
Another great experience; fantastic staff - really good service. I would perhaps have a more extensive cocktail menu. But other than that, faultless!
My favourite place to eat in Stoke Newington. Friendly and attentive staff, delicious food and lovely atmosphere. The paella was amazing!
My favourite Spanish restaurant in London. Love it
We come here often and our last visit was the best yet. The food was outstanding, the service friendly and relaxed as ever and a great Friday night atmosphere. Keep it up and we will keep coming back.
Sublime restaurant, amazing food. Simple as that!
We went for a birthday meal on Monday night and had a thoroughly fabulous time. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was lovely. We’ll be back for sure!
One of these gems in North London you cannot miss... love the fact that the menu changes throughout the year, best one in town !
