For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Table of 5; 2nd time at the restaurant and I’m afraid not the best tapas. The lentil salad with chorizo was super sweet, the mayo wasn’t nice and there way too much of it. We had ordered two of this dish and left the lentils. Lovely place, excellent cocktails and good service but food was really so-so.
Great place! Always love coming here :)
We had a brilliant evening, loved the natural wine and fried aubergine dish.
Loved it and will go back!
Wonderful food with an inspirational wine list. Service was helpful and sincere. Great teamwork too. We had a lovely evening - perfect for a birthday meal. We'll be back!
The food was outstanding and our server (Anthony I think) was so attentive despite the restaurant being at capacity. We had 50% off food through Time Out but would gladly have paid full price; the food was that good. The gambas al ajillo and courgette flower were personal favourites. Good vegetarian options as well. Have already recommended the restaurant to a few people and will definitely be coming back!
Great food, nice atmosphere and really friendly staff. We felt like we were on holiday!
Wonderful evening. Again.
Lovely serving staff!
Excellent service and delicious food !!!
Such delicious food and SO MANY excellent vegetarian options, which is rare for a tapas restaurant. The corvette flower with goats cheese and honey was up there with the best things I’ve ever had!
Amazing food and great quality!!!
My partner and I had the loveliest evening in Escocesa. We are both vegan, and thoroughly enjoyed the amazing way the vegetable dishes were cooked. It was lovely to go out for food in a non-vegan restaurant and have a wide range of food to choose from! On top of this, we couldn’t have asked for better service. Our server was also vegan (sadly I didn’t get his name) and was so helpful, even providing us with a delicious sorbet at the end of the meal! Such an exciting atmosphere and an evening that we will remember forever. Thank you so much!
Really loved our evening out for a date night. Booked with a Time Out table for 2 card so had 50% off food, but would come again and pay full price. Great food, low romantic lighting, buzz as you entered and great cocktails too
Only difficulty was that the delicious plates came slightly too thick and fast for my tastes. Food was amazeballs. Service charming and attentive. This place is really really great.
Loved our dinner last night! As it’s local to me I’ll be back regularly for sure......thanks again
Love this restaurant! Always consistently excellent food with consistently excellent service. Great team work from all involved. Really good value for the quality of food/drink for London. Will return again when next in Stoke Newington.
Just thought everything was brilliant; service was leisurely but efficient; food was excellent; wine choices good; had a very agreeable evening!
Excellent evening as always at Escocesa
We had our wedding dinner there this past weekend. It was amazing!! The help we got in deciding what to order (and quantities) meant I had nothing to worry about. Service, food - all flawless. Best chorizo dish ever on the current menu and best tortilla you will ever have. We love this place. Thank you, Escocesa!
Terrible service, never again.
Wonderful evening with wonderful food - staff went above and beyond to provide us with everything we needed
Scrumptious as ever. Always delivers on food, drink, service and ambience. This was my first time sitting at the bar and I really enjoyed it.
Escocesa was by far the best dining experience I have had in a long time. The food was impeccable, the wine was also lovely, and I genuinely cannot wait to go back there. Every element was superb, I just wish I had found this place earlier. Thank you!
