For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Food and service are fantastic. The courgette flower is my favourite dish. A perfect afternoon was had by all. Thank you!
My friend and I had a leisurely long lunch at the kitchen bar on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was great, loved the seabass ceviche and tuna tartare - and octopus - and oysters - and dessert! Service was friendly and attentive - will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends - thanks! Kate and Chris
Second Sunday at Escocesa, this time with my family and everything was amazing. The food is extremely fresh, tasty and good. Super fan of £1 oyster. Great, friendly and lovely staff. Highly recommended!!!
Amazing food and service throughout. The food is next level delicious. So Simple but fresh, tasty and authentic dishes. YUMMY! Espresso martini was great as well.
Chairs not brilliantly comfortable for older people
loved everything we ordered, we sat at the bar which I think has a much better atmosphere than the restaurant. My new favourite, will definitely be returning
We had a fantastic night, the food was really good and the staff could not have been more accommodating or helpful.
great place, friendly service, delicious food!
Delicious as ever. Love it here.
Beautiful food, lovely setting and very polite and gracious staff member. 5/5
Great food - Standout dishes were the Jamon croquettes & sea bass crevice
I definitely recommend. I will go back.
Only came across this restaurant last week and have already been twice! The food is incredible and comes out very quickly, even on a Friday night! At first the menu might look fairly expensive however, 4 dishes plus a bread basket seems to be pretty filling. Would highly recommend this restaurant to all. One final comment, the margaritas here are probably the best I've ever had!
Only our second time eating at Escocesa this time in a group of 7. Once again it was excellent in every way. Food is just delightful, service with a smile and a great atmosphere in the restaurant. Would highly recommend it!
Loved it, already recommended to friends x
The place was lovely, staff were helpful and friendly, the drinks were good but the food was a little disappointing
Everything was very good. Polite and efficient service, tapas was delicious and fun atmosphere. The only thing that let it down was the apple pie dessert which was dry with little filling.
One of my favourite restaurants in London. Food and atmosphere is top class and you don't need to remortgage your house to enjoy it. Would highly recommend getting a seat round the open kitchen.
One of my favourite restaurants in London!
Fabulous as ever
I love the food. It's just like being in Spain. Very fresh. Lovely staff. My favourite Tapas bar. The place I go for a special treat.
excellent food and service
