For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Lovely food and friendly stuff, just a little bit on the pricey side
Fantastic night at Escocesa. It did not fail to deliver. I had noticed the restaurant a number of times on church street over the years. I was so glad we finally got the chance to go with a little help from a babysitter.
Beautiful setting for a relaxed dinner. Authentic dishes with great ingredients too and exceptional service. Felt truly at home here and will come back!
We had a great time allround
A gem of a place Delicious food Wonderful cocktails and wine Great service
Excellent food at a fair price. Which is why I keep going back. And it’s one minute walk from home 😁
The service is usually good here however on my last visit it was appalling - incredibly slow and we kept having to get the waitress' attention to order. The wine was brought out to us before our cocktails, which we had ordered before the wine/food. Really disappointing considering the quality of the food at this restaurant.
We had a wonderful meal, a friend recommended you are we weren’t disappointed! Thank you.
Beautiful flavours with friendly service.
Really lovely food! Will definitely come back! Pricing was really good too, maybe the octopus was a little expensive for what you get, but I would get it again :) Lovely time!!
Lovely food, fantastic quality. Portions are on the smaller side but this is an excuse to order an extra dish
Great service and amazing food. Will be back again.
Lovely restaurant with friendly staff and great foo. Would have been five stars apart from the warm bottle of cava. Last time we ate here we Alos had a warm bottle of white wine. Would prefer properly chilled drinks. Otherwise a lovely meal.
Another great meal. Two adults, a fifteen year old and a ten year old - all very happy. Enjoyed sitting outside too! Many thanks keep up the good work.
Love the food
Lovely spot, it's a firm favourite of ours in the area.
Always a fantastic meal, and lovely service.
Excellent as always
It was a very enjoyable evening.
Best tapas we’ve had for many years - excellent! Very friendly and relaxed. Unlissable. We hope to be regulars!
There is no much space between the tables, the dining room is very noisy and the service was not brilliant. However the food is good and so the wine list.
Have eaten here many times, normally sat at the bar, which is great. This Sunday, had dinner with all the family, and was also really lovely.
Love the food, great atmosphere and attentive service. And it's five minutes' walk from home!
