For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Fantastic service at the counter. Always makes me happy to be there.
Great food and fantastic service again
Expensive but great food and service. Worth it'!
We sent a note to say we are allergic to peppers and paprika - so wonderful to arrive with our own marked menu to show what we could eat. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening
I am a fun of Estaban and Escosesa since couple of years. Great food. Brought spanish friend for tapas. He loves it. Had my favourite, fully bodied Alhambra beers... and we had Orujo digestivos with desserts. Will be back!!!
On top of their game-as always. Escocesa G&T, fresh oysters, ceviche, tuna tartar.... to die for
Lovely staff and food. Would be great if there were a few kids options on the menu.
Service was friendly and polite even with Covid-19 precautions. The food was excellent and well presented.
Excellent service, excellent drinks, excellent food. Highly recommend. The seafood in particular was divine
The price seems a little bit higher than it should be for tapas portions.
Loved it..... loved the food, the cava, the staff, the decor, the food
Just the most amazing food and wine. Lovely staff and atmosphere too. Just adore this place
Delicious food and great service, highly recommend
Best restaurant in London! The last place we went before lockdown and the first place we went when lockdown was lifted on both occasions...absolutely phenomenal food and drinks. Highlights definitely the oysters, tuna tartare, courgette flower, aubergine, croquettes and of course the pisco sours! Staff lovely and so attentive too. Thank you for a very special experience every time!
Great food and very inventive cooking . Pork dish was really great .
We had the loveliest time! Escocesa is one of our favourite restaurants and it’s the first time we’ve been for months because of Covid. The restaurant was really Covid safe, well distanced with plastic partitions between most tables. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing and delicious as always. I highly recommend the courgette flowers. I could eat hundreds of them. Thank you for a beautiful dinner at a time when everything feels pretty sad and bleak.
Fantastic twist on spanish tapas, delicious cocktails and helpful, friendly staff. A wonderful neighbourhood restaurant. We will be back!
Great as always!
Really superb evening. Exemplary service and great atmosphere, excellent food and interesting wines. Escocesa seems to pull all this together effortlessly.
Amazing all the way. We cannot wait to come back once lockdown is over.
My favourite restaurant in Hackney the simple things are done so well
One of my favourite places ! ❣️
