For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
Our waitress Erica was outstanding in her assistance in selecting the food and wine. We enjoyed all the dishes we had, especially the sardines and eggplant. Full of flavour and a
Amazing food. Great vibes.
This place is always amazing, I have never had a bad meal!
I returned to Escocesa with my wife, a couple of years after having a positive dining experience there with a friend. The meal this time around was a serious contender for being the best meal I have ever had in London. The squid special (squid with chorizo) was so good I ordered another one. The atmosphere is also nicely lit and very romantic, and the staff are attentive and helpful. Simply an excellent restaurant.
My favourite Spanish restaurant in London!
Enjoyed a perfect evening of excellent wine & amazing food. Love the decor, love the atmosphere, will definitiely be back!
Absolutely wonderful evening- great food, friendly and efficient service, and even a little treat for our friend who was celebrating her 30th! Thanks escocesa for another wonderful evening, we’ll be back!
Excellent pig cheeks, prawns & courgette flower!
Excellent experience again at Escocesa. Great atmosphere, excellent produce and top quality seafood and really good service. It’s our favorite restaurant in London
An excellent neighbourhood restaurant. Love sitting at the bar to eat. Extremely good quality tapas
Variety of menu and quality are always good. We had friends over from dubai and took them and they thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Quick and efficient, the restaurant always has a real buzz about the place. Great place for dinner. & the Wine was beautiful too! Thanks again,
Good food, drink, service & atmosphere never fails at escocesa, always love coming here. Looking forward to the next time
Another amazing meal, everything was great and definitely turning into a firm favourite. Friendly staff, nice wine and fab paella - perfect Sunday afternoon location for a meal with friends. Thank you!
Being very enamoured of all things Scottish, and especially their sea food we came with high hopes and weren't disappointed, loved the scallops on white bean puree, and the octopus. Also loved the pigs cheeks (why are they so hard to get hold of when they are so great to cook??).We had a great meal, with great service ~ perfectly attentive without being over bearing and thoroughly enjoyed our evening, will come back to work our way through the rest of your menu!
Once again a spectacular dinner in which is my favorite tapas restaurant. The sardines were spectacular and all the portions we ordered had a special flavor. The wines was another of the part that I liked the best selection of sherries and wines from emerging areas and small producers. The new waitress was at all times very attentive that we did not lack anything (good work) The only thing was not to see Naroa with his usual sympathy.
Everything was absolutely spot on as always!
Great food and cocktails, good value for food but wine list is not that great.
We had a great meal to celebrate our wedding - you managed 12 of us deftly and the food was superb. I’m sure your heart sinks at the prospect of 12 people who are distracted by a celebration on a Friday evening but you made us feel welcome and seamlessly managed food and drinks. Thanks so much. You are one of our favourite local restaurants and remain so!
Tapas was fantastic. Hidden gem.
Have been several times and the food is incredible as is the booze. Staff a little less attentive on this occasion but still really lovely and friendly. My favourite place in the area for a nice treat. Maybe one slightly cheaper house wine might be nice but that is probably just me being a cheap skate! Keep doing what you do and I'll keep coming!
Amazing food, great atmosphere! Have already recmommended!!!
