For your those of you interested in such things, here’s the story of how this restaurant came about.
15 years ago in my previous life as a record producer, (www.discogs.com/artist/102018-Stephen-Lironi ) I was sitting in a rented mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, writing and producing a record for an aspiring artist, when I came across an article in the Guardian.
The article detailed how all the best Scottish seafood would leave Scotland headed for Spain, as there was no domestic market for the more esoteric or indeed expensive catches. Now I don’t know if it was the fact that I was reading this one morning in the Californian sunshine over coffee, that perhaps fuelled a little nostalgia and a yearning for the bonnie bonnie banks. It certainly evoked memories of my parents driving me, my brother and sister from Glasgow to Palamos in Catalunya in 1974, and our subsequent yearly pilgramages.
Whatever………….. that article stayed with me.
Fast forward 15 years, I’ve had enough of the music business, and developed a high level dependency on sherry. I opened my first restaurant Bar Esteban in 2013, with Pablo Rodriguez from Barcelona and Naroa Ortega from Bilbao. Pablo served time in michelin star restaurant Jean Luc Figueras in Catalunya, before coming to London and working in Barrafina and Moro./Morito. Naroa worked front of house in some of the best restaurants in the Basque country. We are joined in Escocesa by David Herrera, from Malaga, as head chef who has done time with Arzak in San Sebastian, before coming to London and working in the Waterside Inn in Bray, and Barrafina in Soho where he met Pablo.
So in a nutshell we’ll be hi-jacking some of the best Scottish seafood on it’s way to Spain and serving it along side some of the best Spanish produce, wines and sherries.
I 💜 this place. Always consistent.
Exceptional food and great, friendly service. A little gem.
Escocesa is my favourite restaurant in Stoke Newington and I love coming back here with old and new friends. This year I also decided to celebrate my birthday here and alongside my grownup friends I also decided to invite their kids as well to introduce them to this lovely place and the amazing food. We had a brilliant time and were looked after so well by the lovely and very patient Escocesa team whose names I sadly didn't ask for. So thank you Escocesa for such a great night and I will be back soon!
Delicious food. A bit pricey but worth it!
Wonderful dinner, simply splendid! The restaurant accommodated a big group for my birthday. Excellent service, amazing food.
In a world of high turnover restaurants this one stands the rest of time for good reason. Consistent great food, good service and a buzzing atmosphere, great every time!
Escocesca is a guaranteed good night out, the food and wine never fails to elicit happy sounds nd the staff are always brilliant. We always bring guests from out of town here to show off our favourite local spot- thank you for being the best!
Wonderful food. The best tuna tartare I have had in years! The staff is very friendly and attentive. Great evening out! Robbie
We came a group of six people and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the variety of excellent tapas and great service and atmosphere. It’s our third visit and we love it!
Everything was great! would definitely recommend as a group outing or a date spot. Food was amazing, staff were friendly, and there was a real buzz in the room. They did forget to bring one of our dishes but we were stuffed anyway and took it off the bill straight away.
Fab restaurant! Will be back.
Visit no 4 for is . Despite arriving early we felt rushed through the meal . The calamari were over fried and we returned them and we were not charged for them . Felt a bit disappointed by the experience doubt we will return,..
Brilliant, very authentic food with a nice twist. Lovely, attentive, Spanish speaking staff. I love it and will be back again soon!
One of our favourite haunts in Stoke Newington - the quality and deliciousness of barrafina at half the price! Few better places to be than sat at the bar stools watching tasty morsels being cooked whilst sipping on vermouth and soda. Fantastic.
Nice atmosphere, gentle staff and great food. Totally recommend it.
Perfect diner. Great staff Great food

The food is excellent, the best tapas I have ever eaten and the atmosphere is relaxed and the staff helpful. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
love this place!
Been three or four times now and this place has never failed to deliver. I have travelled far and wide, but the Escocesa Mussels special are the best Mussels ever. Great experience, superb food friendly staff.
Service a bit slow to begin with. We were waiting a while for drinks but then things kicked on and we had a great time! Lovely food.
Excellent food and drink, as always. An exceptional restaurant maintaining its consistently high standards. Thanks, guys!
Wonderful food, and I can't say enough great things about the service - the staff were brilliant! Will be coming back.
