About El Gato Negro Tapas
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar in an historic converted three storey town house on King Street, in the heart of Manchester city centre.
Founder/chef patron Simon Shaw and his team creates seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. Our food is perfectly complemented by a superbly-chosen range of Spanish wines, sherries, spirits, tonics, beers and cocktails.
Up in Manchester for a long weekend and pleased we managed to book a table for the Sunday evening having read reviews about how good it is. We weren’t disappointed. The food was really good and the service attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely come back next time we’re in Manchester.
The food was excellent and the staff were all very polite and helpful when deciding what to order
Lovely evening. Great food and amazing friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend
Had a fabulous experience. Food was excellent and the service was very efficient. We sat upstairs near the kitchen and could see our food being made. We will definitely come back.
Fantastic evening with tremendous food and cocktails. My favourite restaurant in Manchester by far!
This is my second visit here and as always the food didn’t disappoint. However, I did feed back to the waitress that I didn’t appreciate been followed around from floor to floor. We sat upstairs and had a cocktail, and then went downstairs to pay. We were looked at like something fallen off the bottom of a shoe and called back to pay the bill upstairs. I got the feeling your waitresses thought we were going to leave without paying - not happy... For what it’s worth, I was introduced to this restaurant by my friends Greg and Becky, who know Ollie and Simon! I am not the type to leave without paying - Thanks Corinne
Lovely restaurant, great food and cocktails!
This was our third visit to this restaurant and everything was spot on from start to finish. The greeting when we entered the restaurant felt genuine. We enjoyed a drink at the bar until our table was ready. We were allocated a table on the top floor overlooking King St which was lovely. The quality of the food was really good and the service was impeccable. I think that this is a well run restaurant that tries hard to maintain its high standards. The only tiny negative is adding the service charge to the bill without asking. I had a similar amount in cash ready to give to the waiter and I very nearly paid the tip twice. Overall though what a great restaurant and we will look forward to our next visit.
great food and service for our party of 10 - we had a great night
First time visiting here. Was really looking forward to it as it had been recommended but I was a little disappointed. The atmosphere is good and staff were really friendly but felt it was difficult to get their attention and seemed to wait ages. Not a massive choice on the menu and it is not very clear what some dishes are, I could have asked someone I know but they seemed very busy, one of my dishes was charcoal lamb kebabs, couldnt taste lamb at all, just the charcoal, I did mention it to one of the staff, just got an apology. I thought it was quite expensive too, £75 for 6 dishes and 2 drink each for my husband and I, when the bill came they had automatically put on a service charge which was £12, I do think it should be the customers choice if and how much they leave. Such as shame as I had booked this for my husbands birthday.
Delicious food. Great atmosphere and service. Would definitely recommend and will be returning soon
Lovely place with great food, wine and atmosphere. I’d say at the pricer side of the market but the food was great, so ultimately worth it.
Fabulous experience, first time visit and would definitely return and recommend to others. Loved the table position and ambience, lovely staff, great playlist which was subtle in the background and didn’t interfere with our conversation. Really perfect meal for my partner’s birthday, he was really happy with it. Muchos graçias!!
Absolutely wonderful tapas the best in Manchester
Outrageously expensive for what was served, cramped tables, exceedingly slow service at the bar, and you are unceremoniously rushed out of your table to make way for other bookings. Not impressed.
Placed on the ground floor at the back so no atmosphere prefer sitting upstairs. Did not enjoy the set menu, have eaten of the main menu before and enjoyed the food. Brought friends on my recommendation but would not come with a group again as the comments were ‘had better tapas’ ‘it was expensive for what we had’ ‘very average’.
Fantastic evening and the staff were exceptional. Only criticism was the kitchen didn’t serve the food correctly. We had dietary issues and although the waiters understood what was required the food didn’t come as we requested which was very disappointing . Waiting’ just a little too long for the food to come.
I brough someone here for a first date. The lady who greeted me at the door was super friendly/helpful and our waitress was lovely (she also reccomended us some fantastic dishes)! I thought the food was amazing. Great range of dishes, all very tasty. Cool atmosphere with a nice selection of drinks. Totally recommend! Thanks for a great night!
Excellent service with a smile from all the staff Excellent food just amazing and full of flavour at a reasonable price too
Superb atmosphere and very attentive staff. Delicious cocktails. Loved the scotch eggs, lamb skewers and in particular the sea bass. However the chorizo was a bit underwhelming and the sweet potato was drowned in too much sauce.
This was our third visit. We will be coming back.
Absolutely love everything about El Gato Negro, have recommended to many and all have also loved the food and general experience. Am already looking forward to my next visit which I hope will be quite soon 😊
Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Food excellent though disappointed with the scallops. Good selection of wines by the glass. Only problem was that 2 of our dishes were taken to the wrong table next to us before we had them! Would recommend and return.
Fantastic lunch, good excellent, staff are wonderful. Will definitely be visiting again.
A lovely warm welcome from Savannah and excellent service from Oliver, together with the normal outstanding quality of food made this a memorable experience...again!
