About El Gato Negro Tapas
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar in an historic converted three storey town house on King Street, in the heart of Manchester city centre.
Founder/chef patron Simon Shaw and his team creates seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. Our food is perfectly complemented by a superbly-chosen range of Spanish wines, sherries, spirits, tonics, beers and cocktails.
Below par service and atmosphere for how much money you spend. The waitress hurried us off our table three times even though we weren't in there for that long.
Lovely food but service can be improved. Upon arrival, did not ask us to scan the NHS COVID QR code. Also did not check about allergies (even though it was put in the reservation). Also at arrival we were stood watching the staff talk for almost 2 minutes before they acknowledged us. Food order was taken after other tables had arrived even though we were ready. Once food arrived it was lovely.
It was lovely I only marked down atmosphere as we were outside, we will definitely book again now we can come inside. I would also like to say how good the waiters were especially when it started to rain dashing about making sure everyone was dry and happy . Well done
Waiters and waitresses were really attentive and professional, would recommend to friends and family
Food was quite cold and bland, very quiet atmosphere I would put some Spanish music on low to add some atmosphere to the place, but the service was exceptional and the place was clean and toilets hygienic.
One of the best meals out we have had in a very long time. Everything was faultless, the food, drinks and service. Specific shoutout for the croquettas- some of the best I’ve ever tasted. Will be dreaming about them until I can come back for some more!
A little overpriced compared to competitors for quality and flavour. Still very nice and good range of options and good drink menu. Staff lovely and friendly though slow bar service, had to order drinks twice
Great service and food, and really appreciated fitting us in after being late due to traffic. Slightly overpriced for the quantity of food but understandable due to the past year
The time slots should ideally be longer.
Needed heaters and more of the tapas to be offered
Delicious food and great value
Lovely lunch with good service and friendly staff
Lovely food as always although the espresso martini was the worst we’d ever had and we felt really rushed given there was four of us to eat within the 1.5 hour time frame. Not ideal when this was a treat meal and we were spending more than £200. Also, the outside shelters were not sturdy at all and the chairs were all wet when we came to sit down. The table next to us were drenched when the water fell off the parasol over them. Expected better from such a high end restaurant.
Low atmosphere rating only due to the outside set up you have at the moment. Although the food and service is great King Street is a strange place to eat out. I think the lack of other eateries etc prevents a better atmosphere, sitting next to shut down shops etc. I realise this is only due to the current Covid situation and look forward to being back inside!
Amazing service food is delicious, I read an article about this place on the Facebook page of the Manc, it definitely lived up to my expectations.
The service was efficient and the staff were really lovely and helpful. However, the food was a let down. The padron peppers were too salty to eat and the olives tasted off. The aubergine confit did not taste fresh. The Patatas bravas was nice and hot but it’s hard to get that wrong I guess. The menu is also hard to read with no description of the items.
Exceptional food and service, great meal!!!
We had an amazing time. I’m already planning when to book again!
Overall it was a nice meal but we didn’t receive our prawns for a very very long time (over an hour after ordering) we appreciate its tapas and they come out when they’re ready but they’d obviously just been forgotten about and no one apologised or made us aware what was happening. Because of the delay with the prawns as soon as we received them we were told they needed the table back in 20 mins? All seemed very unprofessional and I’m not sure I’d return again myself
Beautifully cooked and presented tapas - really something special.
Very efficient service and great food.
Food was amazing and didn't take long to receive. Will definitely be coming back once terrace is open
Even with a reduced menu, the food is still just fabulous! Great to be back.
fantastic food, excellent staff, highly recommend a visit.
It was lovely to be out with other diners. Atmosphere score reflects the restrictions you are working under. If it’d been a hot summer evening it would’ve been a 5, but nobody can arrange for he sun to shine in Manchester 🌞
