About El Gato Negro Tapas
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar in an historic converted three storey town house on King Street, in the heart of Manchester city centre.
Founder/chef patron Simon Shaw and his team creates seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. Our food is perfectly complemented by a superbly-chosen range of Spanish wines, sherries, spirits, tonics, beers and cocktails.
Loved all the food and the atmosphere was easygoing and elegant. Will be back next time we’re in Manchester!
Food and service was outstanding. Wish we had chosen to sit on chefs table.. we were in the window second floor where the atmosphere just didn’t feel the same as other parts of the restaurant. It just means we’ll have to return! Thanks!
Pre-midweek theatre supper. Prompt and efficient service meant we really enjoyed our food and had time for a lovely coffee. Food delicious as always. Absolutely spot on all round. Many thanks
I love the place. Food is incredible. Service is lovely. It’s my go-to place with clients and colleagues. Thank you.
Arriving at El Gato Negro I was very impressed with the building, décor and general atmosphere. It was Saturday afternoon and the place was buzzing but table choices were limited and we were sat on the middle floor towards the back, away from the atmosphere of the restaurant and in a dark and dingy corner away from any windows. Our host was generally very welcoming but wasn't always able to answer questions about the drinks/food on offer. There were three of us in our party and we each ordered three tapas dishes. Whilst all were of a reasonable quality, nothing was very exciting and many were overpriced given what was received. I was particularly disappointed with the roasted cauliflower dish which barely consisted of 1/4 of a cauli and not a great deal else - I could have produced better at home. The same applied to the chicken thighs, which actually also included a drumstick. A cheap cut of meat, a small portion and a big price. Not what I would consider good value for money. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Unfortunately, the wrong bottle was brought and opened without asking if it was the correct bottle and without giving the opportunity to taste it. The problem was rectified by making sure the price was corrected on the bill but we didn't actually get the wine we ordered. Furthermore, on checking the bill, we had £20 of drinks included that we hadn't ordered. Again the problem was rectified but we left feeling less than happy with our experience. I can't say I'll be rushing back or recommending you to friends.
We had a great evening We did order Gambas which were delicious but a finger bowl to wash fingers would have been helpful
Great service and some of our favourite dishes in Manchester!
The food is absolutely delicious- everything!
Great service as usual. Delicious food as usual. Thank you!
Great quality Spanish tapas - all prepared and cooked as they should be with good quality ingredients. Pleasant service. A good place for a group of friends or dinner with the loved one.
All very very good, apart from waiter spilt water on our table and then didn’t get anything to clean it up, which was left to us to do
The staff could have been more engaging with us.
Never fails. A Manchester Gem.
Great evening with friends.
Excellent meal, staff were wonderful, really good experience all round.
This is the third time I’ve visited El Gato Negro &, I swear, it gets better upon every visit! Absolutely fantastic food. A great selection of drinks (especially as a guest in our party is pregnant - a fabulous choice of mocktails) The service is second to none & the atmosphere, ambience & general vibe of El Gato Negro is worth every penny. Will certainly be going back for a fourth visit soon!
Great visit, prompt service fantastic food.
By far the most ' bang on ' restaurant for value...atmosphere..service...drink...exceptional choice of food and ambience. My favourite ace to eat in Manchester. Ask me Michelin star Restaurant or El Gato Negro...9 times out of 10 I will choose Wl Gato Negro.. ita a credit to Simon Shaws team... brliant
Excellent birthday celebration
Really enjoyed this place. Highly recommend.
Great food and great service
Friendly service, excellent food and atmosphere
This was recommended to us by a friend and do glad we came. From the lovely welcome from the minute we arrived to the genuine thank you and good bye when we left loved it all and next time in Manchester will be back. One criticism, try and find a fair priced house wine for menu.
The service was good but the tapas were not good; for what you pay you should be getting quality food and proper tapas but this wasn’t the case.
