About El Gato Negro Liverpool
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar housed in a historic building on Exchange Flags, in the heart of Liverpool city centre.
Founder/chef patron Simon Shaw and his team creates seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. Our food is perfectly complemented by a superbly-chosen range of Spanish wines, sherries, spirits, tonics, beers and cocktails.
Lovely food. Really happy, friendly ,helpful people serving even in the heavy rain we had .
Exceeded my expectations. Great food great wine, great service .Even with rain and hail showers we were fine under the covers with the heaters have refined to friends and will be going back again .
Fabulous service, delicious food . Every effort made to make us feel comfortable and safe despite the hailstorms
Had a great lunch, food was some of the best I’ve had in liverpool!
Booked for our 30th wedding anniversary. Got a call the evening before saying that the outdoor covers were broken so our special occasion was cancelled. Couldn't book anywhere else (outdoor with heaters) so ended up staying home. Boo boo 😭
Lovely food and service we will be back
Team did an excellent job considering the monsoon weather we had. We'll be back soon.
Food and drink was amazing, couldn’t fault at all. Very friendly and helpful staff. Only issue was we booked this weeks ago and confirmed the booking for 10pm as we were working all day. We finished work and arrived to be told the kitchen was closed- had tried to call us from no caller ID on the day of the booking, obviously we were working so didn’t answer and couldn’t return the call as didn’t know it was the restaurant. We were very grateful that the restaurant did cook for us, but we felt rushed and only spent about 30 minutes here as last orders were at 10.25. Would definitely rebook when we can enjoy for longer - but recommend the 10pm booking slot is removed from the options, or forward planning contact in advance of the day of booking.
Food and service good. Heated terrace has paid dividends I guess. We ended up having our table for 2 hours but I believe your standard is 90 mins (a friend was with you earlier in the week). This would not leave enough time for all to arrive, get a drink, order and eat. We were a bit rushed with 2 hours.
Service and food was great!!
Might just be my new favourite tapas restaurant! Flavours were amazing! Can't wait to go back!
Lovely food and very well served
Lovely food and great service. Would definitely recommend!
Excellent experience, some of the best tapas I've tasted. Lovely friendly staff, great atmosphere & perfect sat outside in the Exchange Flags with live music. Highly recommend
Really Good Food and Service Was Quick
It was far too rushed with only a 90 minute time slot. Also given that the focus of the service was to get you to leave, automatically adding a 10% service charge was a bit cheeky.
Fantastic staff we brought our 2 year old little boy with us and the they couldn’t have been more accommodating, helpful and welcoming. They were great with him and the atmosphere and how the outdoor eating on the terrace was arranged was lovely. We would definitely recommend the food it was delicious.
Poor service and experience. Will not be visiting again
Lovely food, service and atmosphere. It’s the first time I’ve visited but I’ve heard the tipsy tapas is good value from friend and family. I think some of the tapas are overpriced for what they are - breads, patatas bravas and the platter - only one piece each, of each cheese. Anywhere else we’ve been the portions and platters are much more substantial. I loved the bread on the platter, homemade slaw and membrillo 👍 It would be good to have fall patio heaters too! Sorry just honest feedback. Thank you
We were glad to be back. Food was fab as usual. Drinks were great. My only constructive criticism/suggestion would be that we had a member of our party with life threatening allergies. Our waiter was fabulous but when the food was served (not by the waiter) no-one mentioned allergens so she could easily have eaten the wrong food. Only because we have been before and remember which parts of which dishes have the allergens, therefore made sure she avoid the danger. I would suggest that only the waiter assigned to that table serve that table in such circumstance. Great night though 👍
Lovely post lockdown meal. Covered terraced area was great, especially as we had rain. Bring on 17th May when we can all enjoy the food whatever the weather 😋
Food was amazing no complaints with that. Service was a bit all over the place but given the circumstances I cannot complain overall.
The food and drink were lovely in the square. The service was slow however which meant we had been reminded the table was needed back twice and had paid the bill before our desserts arrived
Food tasted quite bland would not eat there again but drinks were lovely and atmosphere was great
Have a lovely time but had to ask twice for our drinks. Felt a bit rushed out two hours would have been better.
