About Bistro @ Downham Hall
Located in the Essex countryside in the head of a valley which heads down to the River Crouch and overlooks the Thames Estuary in the distance. We are close to several towns, including Billericay, Wickford and Downham.
A venue perfect for an Afternoon Tea or a Coffee trip for some light bites, offering a breakfast and lunchtime menu also.
We had a lovely Sunday lunch with our little family. Only suggestion I would give is to have a child friendly menu if you wanted to cater more for families. Although my son likes a roast dinner, it’s always great to have a few other more child friendly options. Would love to come back for lunch and hopefully dinner if you decide to go down that route 😊
Very nice breakfast with beautiful grounds and staff.
Had a lovely afternoon tea, all the staff were great. Good level of service
Lovely afternoon tea at Downham Hall. Views were wonderful as was the food and service. Will definitely be back.
Lovely food. It would be better to serve the tea with the food rather than with the Prosecco as tea got cold quite quickly
One of the best afternoons teas I have experienced, with the food being second to none!
The room looked lovely, we had a great welcome and enjoyed the live background music although it was a tad loud at times. Starters were all great and good portion size. The main couse salmon with shrimp looked and tasted great but only had a slice of cauliflower as vegetable. I don’t like shrimps so I had salmon but with the roast trimmings. Cabbage was unexpectedly good, Yorkshire pud was overcooked and the roast potatoes were very difficult to cut and so very chewy to eat. Broccoli was good and salmon perfect. Friends who had pork said meat was cooked well. I had custard tart for desert which was a slice of pastry with custard which was a tad too runny for me but tasted great. Vanilla plums were ok. I would come again, I wouldn’t bring anyone with a big appetite though. I would hope the Yorkshires and potatoes would be better. I think I WILL come again but stick to the cafe Welcome and service were excellent. Decent sized car park too.
The overall experience was good. The location and the view are fantastic. It was let down by the team somehow overlooking the information shared when booking the afternoon tea and then again in a separate email about one of our party of 3 being vegatarian. There was no specific veggie options. Upon telling them they made up a few extra finger sandwiches of cheese and egg but it's not the same as having a full range. As a meat eater we had sausage rolls and little coronation chicken things in addition to the sandwiches so felt there should have been veggie equivalents of these.
It was lovely - thank you. Everything was fresh and tasty and beautifully prepared and served. Your waitress, Laura, was lovely and very attentive. The only thing I would say is that the menu could be a little more varied, but that is a constructive comment not a complaint. Would 100% visit again and the afternoon tea looked amazing.
Went for afternoon tea four of us. Staff friendly and efficient. Afternoon tea selection of food excellent. All very tasty and extremely well presented. Choice of teas very good. Prosecco with the meal was very nice. All very good would thoroughly recommend.
We enjoyed our afternoon tea. The place is lovely - beautifully decorated. The Staff were very nice. The sandwiches, savouries, scones & lemon posset were delicious. Wasn't keen on the cakes - a bit dry. Lovely tea & nice to have had choices. The radio was too loud and was on a radio station with lots of talking. I would prefer some nice background music.
a really enjoyable afternoon. the food was lovely. excellent service
Lovely country feel to the lunch - service excellent but unobtrusive Food presentation was lovely Every visit has been a delight Will be back again soon
The lady serving was lovely and really helpful. Really small place and as allows children and babies was just too near when they are moving about with them around you. Not their fault just too small an area. No cucumber sandwiches!!! Just ham and cheese. Would also have liked the option to pick the bread colour rather than 90% white and an option for picking filling rather than just being given what you get. My friend was vegetarian so it didn’t help and I didn’t think to mention it as they never asked. Bread didn’t taste freshly baked which is something I normally really like also. Scones not fresh and warm Nice selection of tea. Just the one cup in the serving. For us this just wasn’t as nice as the other afternoon teas around which are cheaper than 25 quid here and freshly baked. Sadly disappointed :-( but thanks for the great service.
2nd Visit, limited menu, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, due to a change in chef's, holidays and the inpending new menu. Food was presented well, excellent service from the waiting staff, will be re-visiting.
Good value for money, lovely setting, will be back later in the year!
Lovely service! Got served straight away. Lady was very polite and very helpful. The room was absolutely beautiful and was sat right by the window so had a lovely view! 😊 definitely will return. Thank you for your service!
We booked an afternoon tea to celebrate our friends 60th birthday. She loved it and was pleasantly surprised there was such a nice venue so local. Staff were friendly and accommodating and we will definitely return.
Very friendly and helpful waitress. The chef came and told us what we were having for afternoon tea. Very friendly and pleasant man. Enjoy our afternoon tea very much. Would go again and recommend to friends and family.
Beautiful location, attentive staff, lovely atmosphere and delicious food!
The food was presented beautifully and was very tasty. I ordered the lasagna and my partner had the pie of the day, and I must admit when it was served, although the lasagna was tasty I did have ‘pie envy’ !!
Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. They weren’t aware of our reservation but thankfully it wasn’t busy and we were seated straight away. Will definitely go again
Lovely venue great food
Great time celebrating my friend's 80th birthday!
The best afternoon tea around. From start to finish it was a pleasant experience. Our waitress was very attentive and nothing was to much trouble. Cannt wait for the next time
