About The Grill Room at Down Hall Hotel
The Grill Room Restaurant is an ideal location for informal dining in beautiful historic surroundings. Located at Down Hall Country House Hotel, the restaurant is decorated with Italian wood flooring, dark wood tables and large windows that let in an abundance of natural daylight.
The Grill Room Restaurant offers a contemporary British menu with the finest ingredients sourced from our own vegetable garden or the local area.
Afternoon Tea is served daily between 2pm and 5pm
Service: the staff were unfortunately unfriendly and not at all warm, welcoming or inviting. When we first arrived, we had to wait to be seated, then had to later request a menu as one was not given to us upon being seated. Each time we needed the plates clearing or a new menu (ie for dessert) we had to request this rather than the staff doing this naturally as would usually happen in a restaurant. Food: the food was expensive for what we received. I ordered the tomato salad to start which said it came with blood orange and olives. When in fact what actually arrived was a plate of two tomatoes cut up with basil. The sea bass main lacked any flavour and the potatoes were rock solid. The dessert (strawberry meringue) was the best part of the meal but was very small. For the prices, the meals need to be better in terms of taste. The presentation was good, but if you’re going to serve a small delicate portion you need to ensure that each mouthful is delicious. When it’s bland you come away thinking it was just a tiny, bland meal. A shame and a real let down when the hotel room was delightful.
Amazing food, great service - perfect choice for special occasion
I feel the Grill room lacks grandeur - cutlery old and plain, no table cloths on the table (I’m sure they show table cloths in the website gallery , lack lustre staff.....I don’t need to know when my cutlery is being laid incorrectly that they have been here since 6 in the morning.! Plates being removed before the food is finished, butter being removed before bread is finished - twice my friend had to ask the waitress to leave her plate as she wasn’t finished. If finishing lunch around 3pm is inconvenient to your staff then don’t take late bookings - it made us feel uncomfortable - your website does not reflect your dining accurately I’m afraid......at least not on this occasion we visit spas and hotels and restaurants regularly and I’m afraid that with the outer beauty is not reflected within.
The chips were far too salty and I would have preferred the sirloin to be more succulent. Dessert was nice but couldn't cut into the macaroons. Overall a satisfactory dinner
Loved the food, extremely tasty and great service in a relaxed envoiroment.
This is an amazing place and ideal for family/friends gathering. The hall is beautiful and so is the garden. The service is excellent and very high class. The food is fresh and very tasty. We had a great time and I am so pleased with my choice. It was everything I could wish for and I could not ask for more. Thank you Down Hall.
Service was a bit slow and it was very noisy. But it was very good food.
Very enjoyable for winter Sunday lunch and lovely to sit by the log fire afterwards.
the tip should be discretionary not added to the bill otherwise everything was fine
Was surprised the grill room did not served traditional grilled food such as steak at lunchtime.
Terrible atmosphere and hugely overpriced.
We had Sunday lunch here and our roast beef was absolutely delicious the best we have tasted. The hotel is beautiful, we would love to come back.
Excellent meal with a lovely atmosphere
Lovely meal from the valentines menu, had a really nice evening. The restaurant staff were very attentive and friendly, would highly recommend.
Unfortunately wasn’t good experience with the food, very disappointed, ribeye beef very bad taste, duck hard, however the cod was lovely, the hotel and staff amazing, but it’s a shame the restaurant let us down. Would we come back? Yes! But only for the hotel.. not the food.
We cancelled our dining while staying at your hotel because of the late time offered. The dining area is too small and also as we passed there was no ambience, it sounded like an Aviary.
Delicious food & wine, very nice staff. More vegetarian options would be preferable.
Food was nice. Main meal portions were not generous though. My husbands Gnocchi was sparse, counting 9 pieces the size of grapes! Very old fashioned decor. I had gone back to a 1980's meeting room. My terrine was extremely dry. It really needed some relish or pickle or jus, to accompany. Absolutely no atmosphere at all. The wine glasses from the bar were cheap. It was cold and uninviting. But it wasn't horrendous. I just wouldn't willingly eat there again unless It was late and nowhere else was open.
Eating at the Grill Room was very nice, great food and the staff were very attentive.. The only thing that I would say to be negative is that we found the seating of the tables to be very close to each other therefore not much privacy when dining.
A very pleasant lunchtime experience. Enjoyed the good very much. Prompt and courteous service. Sat in the lounge/ hall for tea afterwards which certainly added to the atmosphere.
The food in there Grill Restaurant is very much over priced for what you actually get. The only reason we dined here was that we had a £50 pound gift voucher.
Lack of vegetarian options! Had a very tasty main course on the first evening, but exactly the same meal on the second evening was very poor - lack of consistency. Staff not very personable. Exactly the same menu two nights running. No atmosphere in the restaurant and no outside windows. Shame since the building is so large.
Food lovely, setting lovely. But we felt like we are in thoughofair. Everything but the kitchen sink came out of a kitchen through a restaurant while we eating.
Booked in November to dine in the grill room on Christmas Eve and was told it was almost fully booked. When we arrived for 7:30pm dinner, the Grill Room was completely empty and there was only one other booking on the list. There was no atmosphere and we didn't want to sit on our own in an empty restaurant. The bar staff were not very friendly and not very attentive. Therefore we cancelled our booking and left to find somewhere else. Very disappointing.
This was our 3year of staying at Downhall and we thoroughly had a very lovely time. We were a party of 12 of which 7 of us stayed Friday as well as Saturday. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms are beautifully cleaned. We have never had a problem staying there. Well done to all the staff.
