Dining out in Newbury can become an occasion if the venue is Donnington Grove. The River Restaurant is a delightful place to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine. Set amidst beautiful parkland with the River Lambourn winding through the grounds, this Newbury restaurant has large picture windows to make the most of the picturesque river views. The generous patio area is perfect for al-fresco dining or Afternoon Tea on a delightful, British summer day. Whether a traditional breakfast, Afternoon Tea or a three-course evening meal, Donnington Grove's menus provide tasty dishes that make the most of locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients.
Roast was lovely, deserts are amazing!!!
Great food and drink after our 4 ball golf today
Amazing venue, food and service and great value too, a must!!
We were placed in main restaurant adjacent to large group of drunk golfers. Had little choice but to listen to foul language, burping, inappropriate conversations etc. Management seemed to accept the behaviour as normal! We went there for a special occasion. Never again....
We held a meeting at Donnington Grove over lunch, the venue was convenient for us all coming from all directions. The service was excellent, coffees provided on arrival and the lunch menu was very good and the quality of food excellent. We will return for sure.
It was very quiet the day we were there and therefore we felt that some background music would of made it more welcoming. The room was cold and unfortunately where we were sat was next to the doors which everybody was using to exit the restaurant. I felt that I needed to bring an extra jumper.
Fantastic food, service and venue
Both morning coffee and afternoon cream tea at the hotel was a delight. We were waited on with courtesy and politeness and nothing was too much trouble for the two friendly young men who served us. The restaurant has a good ambience, the table was spotlessly clean and the seating comfortable. Would return if in the area.
Lady on reception was very helpful tell us about all the room offers and meal offers.
George gave us excellent attention & service. Very enjoyable afternoon tea.
Fantastic meal, the food was delicious and we had brilliant friendly service .
We had a young guy serving our table his attention to detail. Polite at all times and continually checked we had enough drinks and asked if we need anything else. The food was delicious and tasty it was my birthday and I will never back as it was worth the money.
Great Afternoon Tea, everything you would expect and more. Lovely hot scones with delicious small cakes and dainty sandwiches. Staff were lovely as well - very polite. Would defiantly book again.
Afternoon tea at Donnington Grove is a joke. Would not recommend, much nicer places in the area that offer better value for money.
We had a lovely afternoon tea and the waiting staff were very attentive and helpful. Due to the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, we only had to pay £10 each. However, the real price is £19.95 which would not be good value for money and we would not be returning at that cost.
Booked afternoon tea for my hard working daughters birthday treat, the food was awful, we sent the dry cakes back only to be given some huge chunks of tasteless cake, the sandwiches were soggy with brown salmon and rubber cheese. At 19.50 per person I expect better. I was given a 10% discount of 3.90 but it didn't really make up for such a let down, certainly would not recommend.
I was very disappointed. I had made a reservation for 3pm and confirmed it but there was no table reserved for us on arrival. Additionally when I booked the cream tea it was advertised at £6.99 per person but when I came to pay I was charged £8.50 per person. Despite querying it with the waiter several times and him checking with his manager, his manager did not even come to discuss this with me. Very poor customer service. This cream tea has left me with a bitter taste.
Staff impeccable and so friendly and professional. Unusual circumstances, but all staff arose to the occasion and we had a wonderful meal. Food, as always, to the highest standard!
Went for afternoon tea excellent good and service. Due to COVID19 we were the only customers, such a shame that things are probably going to get worse for what is a beautiful place to dine.
Will definitely be back. One of best afternoon tea weve had. Lovely that they made us plain scones too.
Very very slow at serving our food, we were one of only two tables waiting to be served we waited 50 mins for sandwiches and cake ! The waitresses changed the tables around after a previous party by dragging the chairs across the room making it impossible to talk and hear each other , when they finished the room was silent so we could hear the conversation of the people that were sat on the table next to us and we couldn’t talk privately as they were sat NEXT to us in an empty restaurant . You need light quiet back ground music , the food was nice but I expected nicer than cheese & ham , egg mayo, cucumber finger sandwiches (we did have a very small salmon finger sandwich each ) for £19.50 each ! Tea was in such a big pot it got cold and stewed before we could drink it , perhaps a smaller pot with the offer of a refill would be better ? Overall a little expensive and slow for what we got
Excellent service by friendly efficient staff.
Young man "George" was very attentive. Food presented well. Would love to see more people using the restaurant. I am looking forward to returning on Tuesday for afternoon tea with three friends.
Staff cant do enough for you.
There was nothing to fault.
