About Donnington Grove Restaurant
Dining out in Newbury can become an occasion if the venue is Donnington Grove. The River Restaurant is a delightful place to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine. Set amidst beautiful parkland with the River Lambourn winding through the grounds, this Newbury restaurant has large picture windows to make the most of the picturesque river views. The generous patio area is perfect for al-fresco dining or Afternoon Tea on a delightful, British summer day. For those not wishing the formality of dinner with several courses, there is the option of the bar that has an extensive menu of light meals and snacks guaranteed to keep hunger pangs at bay. Whether a traditional breakfast, Afternoon Tea or a three-course evening meal, Donnington Grove's menus provide tasty dishes that make the most of locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients.
Excellent service by friendly efficient staff.
Young man "George" was very attentive. Food presented well. Would love to see more people using the restaurant. I am looking forward to returning on Tuesday for afternoon tea with three friends.
Staff cant do enough for you.
There was nothing to fault.
Great friendly service.
The venue was impressive & the service excellent. Would have preferred an alternative menu to the Sunday Roast, but the starters & deserts were delicious.
A very enjoyable meal with great service
Great service, tasty food, excellent value with the tastecard. But, the room was cold, the restaurant wasn't signposted from the car park (we were waiting at reception for 5 mins).
Lovely restaurant in a great setting in the grounds of the wonderful Donnington Grove Hotel. Although service can be a little slow, the food is excellent and is tremendous value for money.
Staff were lovely. Friendly and polite throughout. The restaurant is modern and clean but the food was a disappointment. Although edible the pork tenderloin was overcooked and was tough and dry. 4 little chunks accompanied by 2 small stalks of broccoli, 3 green beans and a huge dollop of mash which was not seasoned and slightly watery. My partner had the rib eye which cost £21. Although it was cooked perfectly pink as she requested, the cut was too fatty, even for a rib eye, and I can get better steaks at many other places in Newbury. Breakfast in the morning was good. My partner made a non standard request which was completed perfectly. My only gripe was that the bacon was overcooked and quite hard but overall a nice breakfast.
Nice afternoon tea, staff very helpful.
My friends and I met here for my baby shower as this was an hours drive for each of us. The setting is beautiful, the restaurant gorgeous, the staff attentive and the food great. We were the last ones there and they were very patient with us ..... it was quite a quiet restaurant so we respected those around us but other guests and staff were all very understanding that it was a baby shower and so had some giggles :)
Staff were under pressure as there were few of them on the night we visited. Nonetheless they were unfailingly polite and helpful.
Friendly and efficient staff, lovely setting and delicious afternoon tea.
The food at breakfast and dinner time has been excellent. Pricey, a little for folk like me.... Atmosphere is lacking, particularly if you are not a golfer, but nice views over the driving range/lake. Service was a little iffy, maybe changes in personnel recently, but seemed very overworked when it got busy.
Excellent food , really good waitress, who with the chef put our desserts within a heart with 30 above it in coolee. It was our 30th anniversary and it was a nice touch. Thanks fellas.
Very pleasant service by staff, ( 2 young boys) we were a party of 4 ladies of senior years. One lady was Italian and her memory of the afternoon was being able to have a conversation in her Native tongue. Lovely fresh sandwiches & cakes and plenty of tea to drink.
The staff were friendly and polite could not do though for definitly be back.
We had afternoon tea and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Food was delicious and service was great. Will be visiting again. Highly recommend.
Afternoon tea was lovely and would recommend this venue to family and friends for any occasion. Staff were helpful and the food tasted great!
Really disappointed with the allergy alternatives that were served. As a group we have been to a lot of afternoon teas and this was a rather pitiful excuse. It would not have taken a lot to serve cakes and scones that were suitable for the allergena that you were advised about way in advance. The setting was lovely but it really did spoil the occassion when you're charged £20 for 4 sandwiches, two flapjacks and three chocolate rice cakes. I can only assume that the mark up is extremely high.
Very pleasant meal. Food, service, atmosphere and value for money were all very good. We will certainly be back.
I made a booking for afternoon tea several months in advance and this was confirmed in writing. On the day on arrival the staff were expecting us for lunch rather than afternoon tea. I believe this reflected in the quality of the food as I do not believe the kitchen were prepared for us. The sandwiches were very sparse with fillings ie one semi circle of cucumber, half a teaspoon of egg mayo and similar size to the cucumber of ham. The bread was very dry. The scone was ok but not convinced it was homemade. The cake slices were finger sized and dry - again did not appear homemade. One person had gluten free and felt the same and rather than gluten free cake the only thing on offer was different varieties of flapjack. Very disappointed
I've been a member for many years and should really make more use of the new restaurant.
Lovely lunch thanks. Helpful waitress and kitchen for our daughter’s allergy and lovely puddings. Plus a lovely location of course. Thanks!
