About Devil's Thumb Ranch - Ranch House Restaurant
Folks in Grand County know that if it’s great food you have a hankering for, there’s really only one place to go. That’s why Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon is OpenTable Diner’s Choice 2020 for Best American and Best Special Occasion Restaurant.
Real food. Real ingredients. Real flavors.
Located in the original homestead that was built on the Ranch in the 1930s, Ranch House Restaurant sits rather unpretentiously on the edge of a sweeping meadow with the Continental Divide 4,000 feet above and worn pine floors below. We like to think that when those early pioneers picked the spot for their home, it was chosen for its magnificent views – elk and moose wander by, horses enjoy their meals in the meadow and a blanket of stars light the night in a way you can only see in a place like this.
We also like to think that those early Ranchers knew a thing or two about eating well. And we carry on the tradition with style at Ranch House Restaurant. We serve New American Mountain Cuisine here – which means real food, cooked with real ingredients, including Wagyu beef from our own Ranch-raised herd. All natural and locally grown whenever we can. Always fresh, always delicious.
Stop in and see us, won’t you? We think you’ll feel right at home here, just like the folks who homesteaded it all those years ago.
Exceptional food and drink. Atmosphere was cozy and pleasant. Great COVID practices in place--I felt very comfortable dining in!
Perfect evening for my 60th birthday celebration!
Wagyu rib steak, YUM! Great relaxed atmosphere, extensive wine list, fabulous drinks! Sadly, too full to order dessert. Can’t wait to go back!
The place is beautiful, the activities are amazing, and the food is delicious! Relaxing in the hot tub with mountains all around is such a gorgeous and fun experience. I highly recommend the archery and hatchet throwing!
Excellent dining experience with small menu options - the atmosphere is fantastic!
Poorly trained staff. Dirty clothes. Show stopper. Kitchen was on point, however.
We were seated at an interior table when there were several window seats available. We asked to be moved and then were moved. The waitress was friendly but went AWOL for about 40 minutes in the middle of the dinner. When we finally flagged a server down they simply said she was “tied up” at the moment. There were at most 6 table seated during the entire time we were eating so there is no excuse for the massive absence by the waitress. The experience was worth about $200 but the bill was $400. We cancelled our reservation for the next night.
For the amount of money charged the food should be perfect. I had mushrooms on toast. The mushrooms were rubbery and very salty. For my main I had the scallops which were overcooked and they vegan pasta it was served with was over salted. I believe my guests were happy. I was very disappointed. The server needs to be trained in higher end dining and not leave guests waiting by staring at a wine bottle being opened by the bartender. I always hope you will get better and every time I come back I am always disappointed.
Super service and perfect meal and experience! Loved it!
Amazing meal, great servers, will be back! The steak was delicious as was the elk!
Excellent fish dish!
We spent our 20th Wedding Anniversary dinner at the Ranch House and could not have been more disappointed. We were not told which items were not available from the menu until we tried to order them- we settled on the scallops entree and there were 3 small scallops- hardly even an appetizer portion- never a glass of champagne, an offer for dessert or ANY mention of a Happy Anniversary - and the service was so slow by the end we were the only people there. I know some servers did not show up That night and they had to bring in servers from other restaurants - but if you are a server that’s your job- do it and do it right - we will never again return there - I can NOT believe how expensive it was for the quality of food and service.
The atmosphere was wonderful. The service was not. There were 4 adults and 2 small children. We had to wait to place the order. Then we waited over 30 minutes to get the order. At no time did anyone check on us.
A must at The Ranch!
Service was slow at ranch house. Wonderful food, but more options would have been nice.
Incredible! Wagyu filet was phenomenal, and the wine list was very good. The views from the restaurant were unreal! If we visit DTR again, will definitely be making another reservation here.
The food taste was excellent, however, the service was subpar for the amount of money spent and ratings of the restaurant in general. My husband’s meal was forgotten and the lamb temperature for the other meals were under cooked. Half of the table was done eating by the time the corrected meals were delivered back to the table. When they brought my husband's meal, they forgot to leave off the mushrooms, which he requested when ordering. After looking at the bill, it seems like they also gave him a side of mushrooms and then charged me for it as well. Instead of no mushrooms, they charged us for extra. Also, we ordered a dessert but the person who ordered it decided she didn’t want it any longer 5 minutes after she ordered. The server told us the dessert order could not be cancelled because the kitchen had already started to prepare it. That response is unacceptable. We also ordered 2 creamed chard and they looked completely different from each other. We asked the waitress if both dishes were the same and she said they were but one must have had more cream in it when they scooped it up. I’m not sure I understand that response since the sides did not even remotely resemble each other. Seems like there were some inconsistencies going on in the kitchen that night. To top it off, when my friend ordered his duck at his preferred temperature, the waitress said she was not going to order it at that temperature because it would offend the chef. Again, another unacceptable response. This was a birthday celebration for my sister. I live in another state and wanted this night to be special for her. I had called ahead and let the GM know this info to ensure our night was seamless. They did write Happy Birthday on the dessert plate that I pre-ordered for her so I guess that was one thing they did great. I had high expectations based on what I had heard about this restaurant and unfortunately they were not met. My sister even made the comment on the way home from dinner that they eat at this restaurant regularly and this was the first time she’d experienced any issues. Hopefully you can use this feedback in a constructive way for future guests.
The most wonderful, luxurious, and private getaway we could have imagined. We felt very safe. Food was incredible and the activities were A+
Perfect restaurant in every way. The food, the ambience, the service. We can’t wait to return.
We were suppose to have the wine cellar room for my best friend’s 50th birthday, but they moved us and not even a sorry. They just brushed us off. I wouldn’t call the setting or the way some people were dressed fine dining. Our server was great. Food was good.
My wife and I had high expectations going in for our dinner reservation. We were greeted with a smile and the hostess checked our coats. We were sat at our table but unfortunately waited for over 10 minutes to have anyone interact with us. The dining room was not full by any means so this was disappointing. We made our menu and drink selections and again had a long wait until our bread and water arrived. The portion size on the appetizer of tuna (most expensive item) was pathetic even for fine dining standards but had great flavor. The potato leak soup was also prepared well and was to our liking. Our salad course came next and portion size was large. The dressings were nice however the beets did not appear to be roasted and the feta on my wife’s salad was overkill. Immediately after the salads were dropped on our table are very expensive steaks arrived only moments later with no time to eat our salads. Our waitress who brought us the steaks apologized and told us that the stakes would be remade so that we would not have to rush through our salad course. After finishing our salads we were ready for our steaks which one brought out were the exact same steaks that had been taken back and promised to be remade for us. My wife ordered the most expensive cut and I the second most expensive cut, the ribeye cap and the center ribeye respectively. While both were cooked to the proper temperature, the cost did not warrant the flavor. For being highly priced Wagyu ($18/oz and $14/oz with a minimum of 5 oz) the flavor did not impress us. They were tasty, but no more tasty than a well prepared filet or beef ribs. We also had the 3 cream mashed potatoes and local mushroom medley as sides. The mashed potatoes were sour as if too much sour cream or cream fresh was added but the mushrooms were very flavorful. Overall we were not impressed with the service or quality for the high cost of the meal and would not recommend this restaurant based on our dining experience.
Service was slow in the restaurant and servers seemed rushed and distracted. When your paying this kind of money you expect better service
The steaks were horrible and we did not eat them. The waitress forgot my drink. We were extremely disappointed in the food. But the atmosphere was beautiful.
Dinner was so darn delicious. Would highly recommend.
