Heck’s Tavern Hours
Friday & Saturday: 7:30am–9:30pm
About Devil's Thumb Ranch - Heck’s Tavern
Our favorite place for gathering where light bites and craft beers become de rigueur.
Serving up modern ranch fare in a no-frill setting, our restaurant centers around an impressive, floor-to-ceiling fireplace built from sustainable materials gathered from our pristine, natural land. Rise and shine with a Breakfast Frittata or Wagyu Hash while enjoying panoramic views of the continental divide. Fuel your day of activities at the Ranch with lunchtime favorites of our famous Wagyu Burger or our vegan, gluten-free Beet & Vegetable Salad. Come nightfall, our dinner delights include Wagyu Meatloaf, Grilled Salmon, Caesar Salad, and more. Don’t forget the s’mores at the outdoor fire-pit (complimentary for lodging guests every night) and live music every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8pm to 10pm.
But Heck’s food is only half the story. If you’re familiar with the famous Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood, Oregon, dedicated as a National Historic Landmark by President Roosevelt in 1937, you’ll notice our restaurant’s striking resemblance. We visited the Timberline in 1999, about the same time we were contracted to purchase the Ranch. Taken by the sheer expanse and natural beauty of its hexagonal shape, we were inspired to replicate that same type of grand and inspiring craftsmanship in the design of the Lodge here at Devil’s Thumb Ranch.
The giant posts and beams are hewn from standing dead Douglas Fir from Vancouver Island, over 800 years old. The siding is Larch. The floor (which is heated by environmentally friendly geothermal sources) is reclaimed Spruce. The stone used to build the fireplace is from a nearby rockslide—the same was used for the fireplace in the original 1937 Ranch homestead, which is now the Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon. We feel these elements connect the Lodge to its natural environment—details we hope you’ll appreciate as much as the food itself.
Everything was fantastic. Will definitely be back.
Staff was super nice and the food was great. Great spot for a birthday celebration.
food was AMAZING- service was amazing.
A great place for dinner. The staff is fantastic, the views are wonderful, and the food is always good.
DTR accommodated our party of 7 during COVID times by seating us in a gorgeous, private room! The food was absolutely perfect, from their home grown Waygu beef cooked perfectly to the delicious veggies, sides and desserts. The wait staff was professional, helpful and kind, something we really appreciate during these difficult times, and made the night even more special with her suggestions and just right level of attention to our party. Thank you DTR and Heck's! We can't wait to come back to your paradise!
Delicious food, fantastic service, beautiful setting. We will be back!
Lovely food and staff
We ate elk tenderloins, vegetable Napoleon, citrusy Brussel sprouts, sautéed local mushrooms & mashed potatoes. Everything was outstanding and each dish was uniquely flavored and cooked to perfection. Breakfast consisted of a brisket egg benedict and a frittata. The brisket was very tender but a bit bland and the frittata was a bit dry, but in total, our dining experiences were wonderful and while not inexpensive, the portions were generous! We hope to return in the future!
Wonderful, relaxed, warm and delicious experience! Highly recommend!
We enjoy staying at DTR, however our experience this past Saturday could have been better. I had a burger and my wife had trout. The burger was over cooked (ordered medium) and the trout was not fresh. Perhaps an “off” night but for the cost, there should be no “off” nights. We will be back to give it another shot.
Food is good, but overpriced for what it is (e.g. the burger should be <$20). Menu is pretty limited as well, lots of overlap between lunch and dinner, which gets old as this is the only restaurant open at the resort. On the plus side, the fries are bomb.
As always, everything was perfect. We appreciate you working with us to check out a day early due to the fires. We will be back!
Food was delicious. Great setting. Loved the cocktails. My husband loved the elk tenderloin. I got the Wagyu dip sandwich twice. Chips and dip delicious! Only negative was the strong basil on the strawberry shortcake.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was outstanding. The venue is absolutely gorgeous. We will be back!
The dining room was beautiful and we were seated at a table right by the large windows with a fabulous view of the ranch grounds, horses, and mountains. The food was equally incredible!!! The elk tenderloin was delicious and cooked perfectly. The wild locally-foraged mushrooms were my favorite side dish, followed closely by the crispy Brussels sprouts. The beet and mozzarella salad was filled with unique flavors, especially the sauce/dressing made with local herbs. Our server was very friendly and personable. A highly memorable meal!
The staff was generally very helpful and friendly. Loved the bathrobes! Having the option for room service especially during COVID was much appreciated.
Staff was courteous and extremely friendly. Our room Was beautiful with a gorgeous view. Would definitely recommend to others.
Views are off the charts.
