Heck’s Tavern Hours

About Devil's Thumb Ranch - Heck’s Tavern
Our favorite place for gathering where light bites and craft beers become de rigueur.
Serving up modern ranch fare in a no-frill setting, our restaurant centers around an impressive, floor-to-ceiling fireplace built from sustainable materials gathered from our pristine, natural land. Rise and shine with a Breakfast Frittata or Wagyu Hash while enjoying panoramic views of the continental divide. Fuel your day of activities at the Ranch with lunchtime favorites of our famous Wagyu Burger or our vegan, gluten-free Beet & Vegetable Salad. Come nightfall, our dinner delights include Wagyu Meatloaf, Grilled Salmon, Caesar Salad, and more. Don’t forget the s’mores at the outdoor fire-pit (complimentary for lodging guests every night) and live music every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8pm to 10pm.
But Heck’s food is only half the story. If you’re familiar with the famous Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood, Oregon, dedicated as a National Historic Landmark by President Roosevelt in 1937, you’ll notice our restaurant’s striking resemblance. We visited the Timberline in 1999, about the same time we were contracted to purchase the Ranch. Taken by the sheer expanse and natural beauty of its hexagonal shape, we were inspired to replicate that same type of grand and inspiring craftsmanship in the design of the Lodge here at Devil’s Thumb Ranch.
The giant posts and beams are hewn from standing dead Douglas Fir from Vancouver Island, over 800 years old. The siding is Larch. The floor (which is heated by environmentally friendly geothermal sources) is reclaimed Spruce. The stone used to build the fireplace is from a nearby rockslide—the same was used for the fireplace in the original 1937 Ranch homestead, which is now the Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon. We feel these elements connect the Lodge to its natural environment—details we hope you’ll appreciate as much as the food itself.
Mask wearing needs to be way better. Below the nose is not acceptable and not keeping anyone safe. The main GM just walked around the night before constantly with a mask that was way too big for his face. Not a good example for any other employee. Food, however, was incredible.
The location, view, and amazing architecture make this a great atmosphere. Look for moose through the huge windows! They have mastered a hamburger! And fries. Bring gluten free is a comfortable experience here with menu labeling and yummy options.
Not very thrilled. Burgers and beers tasted great but didn’t get the flight like it was supposed to come with. Ambiance was ok, but definitely felt weird with the restaurant being as dead as it was. Service was very very slow. Entire experience was over 2 hours. Not what we were expecting. Sad that we are staying here and feel like we have to go into to town for food/drink to feel like we aren’t paying 5 star resort prices for a 3 star resort at best.
Always excellent food with great service! We love Hecks!
On two occasions it took too long for our food to arrive HOWEVER the house took responsibility for that and took 50% off our bill without our ever commenting on the issue. That was impressive!
Great dining experience!!!
The service at Heck’s was terrible. Waiters didn’t check on us regularly, they messed up orders consistently, they were not knowledgeable about basic service expectations. We were told they couldn’t make any drinks after taking the order and we even had to ask another waiter to make the original drinks we ordered after not hearing from our waiter for 15 minutes. The hostess was terrible. She needs to have a pitcher of water to fill glasses when she seats people so the 15 minutes between being seated and the first encounter with the waiter at least has water at the table.
The servers where all exceptionally hospitable. However for all of our meals, we waited at least an hour for our main course. Which is incredibly challenging when you have young children.
The food and atmosphere were incredible. However, the waitress should have clearly stated the price for the Wagyu Beef special. When the bill came, I was floored by the $168 tab for that item.
Very large portion sizes.
Brunch menu on weekends, or able to order off breakfast menu during lunch hours. A fix price menu was available for Easter Brunch, but didn't want that much to eat.
Caesar salad was made with iceberg lettuce and was flavorless. Waiter provided excellent service and took it off our check. The rest of our meal was delicious. Loved the Shepard’s pie and the striped bass.
Stunning restaurant with great views, wonderful menu and very competent staff.
Incredible place! I wish the restaurants were open daily, and a little bit later. Other than that, this place was absolutely beautiful, will definitely come back.
A serene safe atmosphere during these most difficult times.
We dined at Heck's while staying at Devil's Thumb Ranch. The food, wine and cocktails were delicious! The Après Ski happy hour was the perfect end to a day of skiing. We enjoyed an appetizer and beer out on the patio overlooking the mountains. My only complaint is that when we ordered take-out one night they forgot the shrimp on the salad. They were very quick to correct this and brought it to our room. Overall, would recommend!
Many tables are near the huge fireplace or have views of the meadow and mountains. Great food and friendly service in a casual atmosphere.
I wanted to take a moment out and explain how fantastic this resort was for my stay. I wanted to ask my girlfriend to Marry me. I spoke with Fiona and explained my ideas. She quickly assisted and pointed me in all of the right directions. She was wonderful, helpful and living in Florida she was my life line for this special day. Fiona got me in contact with Nikki at the stables and she had the ride and adventure all set up for this special day of ours. When we arrived everyone was so wonderful, helpful and nice. Nikki and he team mate made the sleigh ride magical and will be a memory I share with until I die. After the sleigh ride, we went over to the spa and had a special private spa overlooking the mountains. The ladies in their made the room look amazing and made from the moment we walked in she felt like a queen. From there we checked into our room, which was just amazing and ate dinner at the steakhouse. Our dinner was amazing and the staff all kept telling my fiancé congrats without her knowing they knew. She felt so special and this was all from your staff. This day could not have been so special without Fiona & Nikki. I can and will never ever be able to thank them enough for the wonderful moment that they were able to create for me and my future wife.
We had a wonderful visit. The staff was friendly and the room as relaxing
Overall the experience was good however a few notes worth mentioning: The menus are limited and if we were there on property more than just for the weekend the choices available would be stale quickly. There are no cold sandwich options or other items that could be brought back to your room and eaten later. Some items on the menu were unavailable which was confusing since it's such a limited menu to begin with. The bar in the tavern was out of OJ 2 days in a row for Mimosas (not sure why a staff member could not have run down to the local grocery store and picked up a few gallons until their delivery truck arrived). All of the items were high priced for what they were and I felt that putting the "Wagyu" word in practically item was overkill and price jacking. In most items that had Wagyu in them as a featured word in the description, just tasted the same as the non-Wagyu version. The staff was nice and the atmosphere was enjoyable with great views of the mountains. On our last day at the resort we found ourselves wanting more variety and so we opted for a breakfast in winter park instead. Not what we expected for a "luxury resort".
The food is OK. it is very salty and sometimes overdone. it felt very expensive for what you got. Service was great.
Food was average at best. Deserts were bad and almost uneatable.
Our waiter was very professional and the food was great. The only low point was the dessert. Very dry and a disappointing end to an otherwise great meal. I know the front desk staff is not part of Heck's, but the Resort front desk staff would benefit from some additional training. When we asked about getting a drink upon check in we were told, "the bar is closed". We were told we had to order room service. We tried to get clarification but the person who checked us in seemed confused. The bar was open and we ordered some wonderful cocktails from a very nice bartender and then just brought them out to the patio and enjoyed the views.
Service & food is amazing. The food comes out a little slow (I think this is issue in the kitchen). It's tough with small children to wait. That is our only complaint!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had 2 wonderful meals at Heck's. the service was excellent.
