About De Mondion
Set atop Mdina's centuries-old bastions, within the Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, the de Mondion offers a unique fine dining experience, enhanced by truly spectacular panoramic views of the island from the terraces and charming features served in elegant surroundings.
very good service, good food and warm atmosphere
Took some clients that were very impressed. We went for a tasting menu and Nico I believe proposed some lovely local and foreign wines. Top marks to all the team for looking after us. The view from the restaurant is second to none and really is a perfect spot when showing foreigners. I will be back soon.
Easily the nicest restaurant we visited on Malta. Delicious food and professional and friendly staff. :) And Mdina is beautiful.
Wonderful food, service and atmosphere!!
Well done to all for creating a wonderful taste of Malta wine pairing menu. Chef Johan Lafer and his family really enjoyed it. 🙏👏🏼
As ever De Mondion continues to be the best dining experience in Malta by some margin. One for the whole team. So happy to visit.
A romantic dinner in a wonderful location. Very kind and professional staff and foods very good.
Excellent dîner dans un superbe environnement. Personnel aux petits soins.
Lived up to every expectation! Amazing service and food, will always be back for special occasions.
In brief; this is a unique, charming venue, with breathtaking views. The servers, although polite and capable, got our orders mixed up. The restaurant would benefit from a sommelier or similar to recommend from the extensive wine selection offered. In more detail; We were about five minutes early and ahead of opening (opens at 19:30). Once we managed to get the attention of a server and were allowed to select our table. We opted to dine on the outdoor terrace as it was a clear summers night and the weather was crisp but not cold. This vantage point allowed us to view the surrounding land for miles, and it is just spectacular. These views are the absolute raison d'être of this restaurant, and a visit here is a must for this alone. A reasonably extensive seasonal à la carte menu containing a tasting menu and separate wine menus were provided. We particularly liked the focus on fresh local ingredients and supply of local wines. The tasting menu was disappointing at €90 for five items and no wine pairing was implied or offered. We opted for items from the à la carte menu, with two seafood starters and steak mains consisting of the Charloaise Fillet and a special cut of the day; the ever-famous Wagyu. The wine selection was extensive, however a request for recommendations was crudely responded with a request for our budget, instead of a focus on what would best suit our food choices. The eventual recommendation was provided at the limit of our budget (€100). We opted for a cheaper bottle (€40) - which was fantastic and suited our food choices perfectly. The server would benefit from more training in recommending wines and should not focus on budget, instead recommending two or three choices at varying prices. This would provide their extensive wine menu the respect and expertise that it deserves and also avoid making the diner feel like any other choice is a compromise. A focus on matching the diner's food choices is a must. The amuse-bouche was an uninspiring ricotta-stuffed(?) ravioli with a foam of some description. The Red Prawn and Octopus starters were spectacular, and are highly recommended. The fillet was ordered medium and the Wagyu medium-rare. They mixed our order... The fillet was served medium-rare and the Wagyu was served medium - it was still delicious, but for a restaurant of that calibre to make such a simple error was truly disappointing. We didn't want to make a fuss, so we swapped plates and dined on each other's choices. In summary, the views are wonderful but the dining experience, however good the intent, falls just short of being something truly spectacular. The service would only take a little more attention to be excellent, and it's worth noting that the team observes fine dining etiquette and protocols. The extensive wine menu deserves more respect and attention at the point of sale. The tasting menu is uninspired, and would benefit from more courses and maybe an option of a wine pairing ~ something that sets it apart. We would absolutely visit again, but with more realistic expectations. This is only a medium-high end restaurant due to the venue, which also justifies the steep pricing somewhat. It has great ambitions but make no mistake, De Mondion is not yet a candidate for anyone's top 5 for the food, and certainly not for a Michelin Star.
Me and my husband had a very nice time and such a romantic setting for our Wedding Anniversary would definitely recommend this restaurant for its service, location and quality of food.
What a great find in a truly beautiful setting. The food was outstanding and the staff were superb. We will definitely be back when we return to Malta and we would highly recommend it to all our friends and family.
Had a wonderful evening. It was a special evening to celebrate our engagement and it lived up to all expectations. The staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. We felt incredibly spoilt!
We had a fantastic evening at de Mondion for our Honeymoon, the service was fantastic and the chef prepared a 5 course vegetarian tasting menu for us which was great!
Encapsulates the best of dining experiences in Malta!
Wonderful atmosphere, great food and awesome service.
Wonderful food & ambience. We went for the tasting menu which we highly recommend. However, the 2 glasses of champagne we had to start with were over expensive.
Excellent food, well presented with exemplary service. Congratulations to Aodhan and his colleagues for a most enjoyable evening.
Extraordinary food, amazing service and very beautiful atmosphere. It was a great pleasure to have dinner at this restaurant and I hope to be back here soon.
Waiting staff were very attentive and efficient. The food was amazing, Michelin star quality at a reasonable price.
Perfection for me and my girlfriend
Your staff were excellent and friendly. The outlook was great. Food beautifully presented and very tasty. The only thing I would say would be signage to find you. I appreciate it is an old city. Didn’t help we were given wrong directions! Could not fault the restaurant. Fantastic evening. Thank you to all.
Restaurant staff was a bit too format for my liking.
