About Countryman Inn
The Countryman is surrounded by stunning open countryside set close to the small village of Shipley, the 3,500 acres of farmland owned by the Knepp Castle Estate provides the perfect backdrop for a pub lunch in the beer garden or an evening in front of the fireplace.
Inside you’ll find warming log fires in the winter, and cask conditioned Harvey’s and Organic Horsham ales in the cosy bar, together with over 30 wines from around the world.
As we do not have a dedicated play area or family room with high chairs we apologise if you find our restaurant is not suitable for very young children. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own personal booster seats for younger diners/children.

A lovely pub in the country. The food was lovely as always and tables placed two metres apart to adhere with social distancing. Would highly recommend.
As always excellent lunch time meal. With everything going on with Covid the landlord and staff were very welcoming and had good level of procedures in place to keep themselves and their customers safe.
Hi Team, Had a Fab few hours sitting in the beautiful garden of your lovely pub, all the staff were great and service was brilliant. Would recommend any one to de-stress in the Countryman garden, My dog enjoyed her self as well
Great food and service as always - thank you!
Fabulous fish menu
Very good lunch.
Very nice lunch with old friends. Food good & so was the service. Felt very safe, well organised & plenty of hand sanitiser throughout the pub.
Great cod and chips. Lovely and helpful staff. The whole one-way, socially distanced situation is managed very well. Looking forward to visiting again.
Thank you for a really great lunch yesterday, lived up to all the expectations we and all your customers have of you. We enjoyed everything about the lunch and will return soon. We already have a table for 4 booked mid October for lunch with visiting friends and will also lunch with you again before that. Also thank you for being there for 'normal life' in these troubled times Best Wishes John Chidlow
Lovely quiet rural location, friendly and willing staff. Food was very good and value for money! Bit of a wait but was very busy for a weekday, staff apologised for delay.
Every single visit has been wonderful the food is amazing love the shop also. I have so many choices as I do not eat meat usually it’s just fish and chips wherever I go. It’s fantastic as the fish is fresh and cooked to perfection can’t wait to our next time. Husbands roast was lovely and very happy 😊
Very pleasant Sunday lunch, excellent variety of food especially the fish, the service was extremely good and delivered with a smile, would definitely recommend and will be booking again
Lovely place, lovely food, and I had a choice of 3 different Sauvignon Blanc’s not my usual take it or leave it choice!
Lovely to be back at the Countryman and to be remembered and greeted in such a positive way. Delicious meal, thank you. Also, well done for all the measures you have taken to make us feel safe. One of our party had not been out for a meal since March, and she felt very comfortable in the restaurant. We look forward to returning.
Lovely country pub, good food.
Lovely food and the service was excellent will definitely come again
The Countryman is my all time favourite pub. I can not recommend it highly enough. The food is always excellent the staff friendly and the whole experience really enjoyable. There is a lovely atmosphere as soon as you walk in . The menu is great and the choice of fish dishes a bonus .
No atmosphere, as hardly anybody in restaurant. We realise that’s probably because of the Coronavirus. We had a lovely meal in spite of that. Thank you.
Hmm, not super welcoming to start with. We asked if we might have an outside table and were told we would have to swap with someone! However, throughout the meal, there remained 3-4 outside tables free within my limited view. The first waitress told me you didn't have an elderflower (of any kind). When I asked her to check, she was gone for over 10 minutes. I had to go and ask at the bar.... The food was barely ok. My apple and celery with my cheese board consisted of 2 thin slivers of both: surely at least half an apple would be possible? The coffee was good. Sorry but this is what we thought.
staff are really friendly and helpful. always welcoming
The food was excellent and the organisation for Covid 19 was good. I realise you may have new procedures to cope with but our starter took 40 minutes to arrive. my rating on service reflects this but not on the staff who were very good.
During these difficult times of covid, Alan and his team always make us feel welcome and safe. The food is always delicious and love the variety of fish and local produce on offer. Thank you
Excellent service and food
Had the roast beef wasn't mentioned on the menu plated on a bed of cauliflower cheese, not good had to leave.
Lovely friendly place excellent well kept outside are with beautiful view watching the deer strolling buy in next field. Will certainly be going many times.
