About Countryman Inn
The Countryman is surrounded by stunning open countryside set close to the small village of Shipley, the 3,500 acres of farmland owned by the Knepp Castle Estate provides the perfect backdrop for a pub lunch in the beer garden or an evening in front of the fireplace.
Inside you’ll find warming log fires in the winter, and cask conditioned Harvey’s and Organic Horsham ales in the cosy bar, together with over 30 wines from around the world.
As we do not have a dedicated play area or family room with high chairs we apologise if you find our restaurant is not suitable for very young children. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own personal booster seats for younger diners/children.

Great food and service. Adapted a dish for us, greatly appreciated
Can't fault the place, excellent food, friendly staff and a great setting.
Good service ,nice atmosphere,good food.
Good varied menu, fresh local home cooked food. Portion sizes adequate though not huge. Prices reasonable for the quality. Lovely location.
It was pleasure to have a lunch at the Countryman, especially as there were no children disturbing the ambiance of the establishment
Love The Countryman consistently high standard
Always lovely food and good service... Thank you
Evening slightly marred by the choice bits of foul language from nearby table.
Beautiful, cosy pub. Excellent staff, attention to detail - remembers my partner's birthday. Highly recommended for a lovely dinner in the countryside
A very nice meal in lovely cosy surroundings and very nice staff.
Delicious fish dishes and sweets, plus great service. Thank you for another enjoyable visit.
We were looked after like royalty (and we are not!) by Alan and his wonderful team. The food, in particular my crab Thermidor, was superb and we had a great evening out. Thank you team!
Excellent attentive service. Great food. Very comfortable.
Took a friend for a meal an evening meal. New starters and some new main meals now on the Menu. Had the steak as main and was very tender and cooked to perfection. The Countryman and its produce and chefs do an amazing job My friend was equally impressed and will be dining again at The Countryman.
This is probably the best restaurant pub in Sussex. Serving a range of traditional & modern dishes, there really is something for everyone! My 7 year old is particularly fond of the Calamari, and my husband the bacon roly poly! I love the chilli beef salad!
Sometimes I can see that the waiting staff are rushed off their feet and perhaps could do with more help at busy times-I think they cope admirably under pressure. A good choice of menu, something for everyone, and the specials are a welcome addition to the regular menu.
Starters and mains were fantastic 10 out of 10 and would thoroughly recommend. Seemed like freshly cooked and great ingredients. Good ale and great trad pub feel. Staff very friendly and fast. Puddings were the only let down - small portions, just out of a box onto a plate and a little bit over priced.
Many thanks for your feedback and we are really happy that you enjoyed your meal with us. You are absolutely right, everything here is freshly made from great ingredients, and that includes all of the desserts. Absolutely nothing is out of a box, every pudding is professionally hand made in house every day which reflects both the portion size and price and we feel that £5 is realistic considering the time, expertise and organic ingredients. Some desserts may appear larger than others, but that is solely down to the type of pudding. A light fluffy cake will look bigger than a Brûlée, but the amount of ingredients, expertise, preparation and cooking time will be similar. However, whenever possible, we are more than happy to offer a larger portion on request at no extra cost for those occasional larger appetites with a sweet tooth. We love what we do and our aim is to keep it local, friendly and traditional. Hope to see you again soon. Once again many, many thanks.
good food and great friendly service.
The food was generally very good, although the portions size of the lemon cheesecake was tiny and disappointing and definitely not worth £5. The service in the restaurant was not very good. The waitresses were not chatty and were abrupt and were rushing around although we were told that there was a shortage of staff that day. Service at the bar was a lot better mainly due to the fact that 2 people were working on a small bar so had time to chat. There was a long wait for our starter to arrive especially as the restaurant was not fully booked. Although the food was very well presented and tasty, it was overpriced.
Visited many times and never been disappointed. Staff very friendly.
Eaten here many times and never disappointed.
Very nice country pub with good food and friendly service.
Food and service excellent ,can't fault anything.definitely be going again soon.
Never had a bad meal, service always good with friendly and helpful staff. Lovely beer garden to. Have recommended to many.
You must be prepared to wait while the food is cooked but all 6 of us agreed that we had excellent main courses. One of our party had the lemon posset which was totally liquid though we all expected it to be a set consistency. All the waiting staff were efficient and friendly but we did struggle to find someone to speak to when entering the restaurant.
