About Counter Culture Board Game Cafe & Bar
Wellington's premier board game cafe and bar. We have over 500 board games on the shelf to choose from, a wide selection of food for lunch, brunch (weekends) and dinner, Good Fortune coffee, wine, cocktails and local craft beer on tap.
Another great night at Counter Culture.
Amazing place, very accommodating and just so many options to choose from in terms of games. They'll soon need to open a bigger location I suspect....
We spent a great wet and windy Wellington afternoon playing games at Counter Culture. Our lunch was excellent. The outstanding toasted sandwiches, curly fries and homemade ice-cream were a real hit with the kids. The coffee is likewise perfect. We will definitely be spending more afternoons playing board games at this cafe.
Fun times for the family. Amazing range of games
Great place. Very good game selection. Friendly staff.
Such a great place. Dropped our daughter and a few friends off for a teenage birthday party. The loved it - and we loved how easy the staff were to work with, making sure the teens were fed, watered, and given birthday cake all without us being there.
This was a really good activity. They have a huge selection of games, the hardest part is choosing which game to play. The atmosphere is good and the food and drinks on offer are good as well.
Great place to try out some games and have some family fun.
Friendly team and lovely atmosphere, one of my favorite place here in Wellington.
Been going here regularly since opened. Never had anything to complain about. Staff are awesome, food is yum and great range of games.
Need more trivia games
The two guys working tonight (4/10/2018) were awesome ! Loved the variety in your board games, and the drinks and the ice cream were really yum! I think my only recommendation maybe invest more in platter like food? Seeing as most of your business revolves around groups? And maybe have a more comprehensive catalogue of your games? But really a five star experience tonight, thanks for making my birthday great!
Such a cool spot with a great selection of games and very friendly and helpful staff! Will definitely be back and I really do recommend people to give it a visit! Thank you!
My family enjoyed a Wellington reunion over games. We played old favourites but will come back for a session to explore other games since there is such an impressive collection. Thanks - it was fun and it's a very cool idea
Booked a few days in advanced online for 5 people and requested Scythe specifically as that was the game we all wanted to try out. Up on arriving we had a table that was too small for 5 people, especially once we added food and drink to the mix. Then we found out that they just gave Scythe to someone else to play. We almost left there and then as this was the only reason we came in that day. We ended up playing Terraforming Mars and then once Scythe was free they held that for us and we played it. Aside from these two issues the staff were helpful with rules and quick tutorials. I'm unlikely to go back however.
Counter Culture is a great place to spend an afternoon.
Fun evening thanks.
In short, our table loved our evening at Counter Culture! Aside from the great atmosphere and mean beer on tap, I personally really appreciated that, despite our table taking 2 and a half hours to complete a game that should take 45 minutes for a bunch of 10 year olds, the staff did not laugh at us. Plus I won.
Great place, great games, great staff, didn't have much food, but the menu looks awesome and the curly fries were as good as can be.
Tasty food, caters for a range of diets. Amazing selection of board games. The staff member was very polite when it became apparent that half of our 10 person group weren't coming.
A great environment for the team to get away from the office and try some new games - thanks!
Counter Culture is fantastic. We have a regular group of friends that we visit with every few months. Atmosphere: Its a very cosy place with a natural buzz as everyone is having fun. The downside is that the café gets extremely loud at times. There is a hard floor and groups over 6 once they get into a game become exponentially louder. This can make the experience frustrating at times. Service: Service is generally very good. They have few Game Masters who can help you select games and then teach you how to play. They also check-in with you to see how you are going and answer any questions. Without these people the experience wouldn't be the same. Food & Drink: The drinks are very good, however the food menu is fairly limited and could use some improvement. This is a place where you spend up to 4 hours if not longer so better meal options could improve the experience. Value for Money: at $5 per person its a cheap afternoon. In saying that its highly unlikely you will buy a few drinks and some food. Overall though its similar to going out for nice lunch cost wise. Overall, the place is great and I would highly recommend it for a fun afternoon with friends. The one area I feel needs immediate improvement is a solution to keep noise levels down. Also, the menu could use some work, however the food is fine and in no way detracts from the experience.
We were unaware that for a specific seating arrangements you had to show ID, one of my friends didn’t happen to have hers on her so we had to move, the guy was real nice and helped us switch tables with another group but it would’ve been nice to know in advance to avoid any awkward situations!
Friendly and helpful staff. Cheers guys!
