About Coal Grill and Bar Exeter
You can’t miss us - a smart city centre restaurant on a prominent
corner of Princesshay’s main piazza. Over two floors, you can enjoy views of the
cathedral and relax in our very busy cocktail bar.
The outside seating area is open all year round.
Food was adequate. Service was friendly. Cocktail prices really good.
Dear Sir or Madam, We choose to dine in your restaurant today to celebrate my birthday with family and we all travelled from Plymouth only to be let down completely. Firstly we arrived and were left at the door for ages whilst you decided which table was our reserved table - despite the whole restaurant being empty. I took my little one to the toilet to be greeted at the bottom of stairs by a full bucket and mop and the waitress still trying to locate our table. Finally we were seated and then met with the slowest service in the world not by our waiter but by the general disorganised running of the restaurant! We finally placed our order and then watched our drinks sitting on the bar for over fifteen minutes and when we asked for them we were met with a very blank expressed waitress. Our food arrived fairly slowly however did meet our previous expectations of dining with you only to have to have to repeatedly ask for the bill. We sat at a dirty table for ages and then it was partially cleared before the waiter went off to run other errands etc before completing our table and arriving with the bill. We then waited ages and gave up and ended up paying at the bar - not exactly how I planned on spending a family meal! Yours sincerely Natasha Pasmore
Great service and food
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Lovley food never had a bad meal!
Dear Aaron, thank you so much for taking the time to share feedback. We’re so pleased to hear you had a good time at Coal Grill & Bar and hope to see you back here soon!
Hi Georgie, thank you so much for taking the time to share feedback. We’re so pleased to hear you had a good time at Coal Grill and Bar and we are looking forward to your next visit!
It seemed that our booking was lost as the greeter had to go off to sort it out. The table was dirty and sticky. Service was friendly but slow. The young lady who served us to start with was lovely. Food was ok but nothing special, not amazing value for money.
Atul our waiter looked after us like a professional, we would be back just for the service.
Maddie was very helpful when we used our new discount card when paying and my lemonade that had no flavour was replaced with no fuss. The food was delicious.
I hadn't returned to Coal in Exeter for quite a number of years as the last time was not a good experience and after putting a letter of complaint in and not having it answered I had never returned. So after a number of years I decided to revisit with some girlfriends as they thought the menu sounded good and reasonably priced. So I decided it had been a long time so i would give you another chance. To my disappointment the food was terrible. The meal came out cold and wasn't cooked. After sending it back it then came back so tough as the chicken had been cooked further as had the cheese. The fajitas were cold as they were left on the table to await the main meal, which took another 10 minutes. We were given a 40% discount but to be honest that didn't help as when I go out for a meal I do expect a simple meal as Fajitas to be cooked to satisfaction. I won't be returning again to Coal unfortunately as the service although pleasant was not proffessional and the food was one of the worst I have had in a long time. It i s a shame as Exeter seems to be struggling with good food houses and this could work with the right management.
Food was very good considering most of the order was forgotten. The service was awful miserable waitress. Obviously something going on between the manager and the waitress. PDA whilst working not appropriate
Doug was an outstanding waiter
Great service & atmosphere! Would highly recommend.
Amazing food! Nice ambiance. Perfect for any get together
So many amazing options on the menu and very fast service
We were disappointed to learn that the "no catch" free bottle of Prosecco had a catch....you can't use it in conjunction with other offers. So we didn't get to benefit from 2 4 1, which was a shame.
I went for a meal with my girlfriend, we were seated on a table by the open door which was quite cold. We waited around 20 minutes before anyone asked us if we wanted a drink, and when when we finally got asked to order food I requested a sirloin steak which I was told they had none left. I then asked for a rib eye steak and was told the same thing, so I ordered a burger instead which wasn’t a problem. My girlfriend ordered fire sticks, but was not asked what sides she would like. And when we finally got the waiter’s attention, he said he had guessed she wanted fries and salad. When she expelained she did not like fries and would like rice, he rolled his eyes and sighed. Around 20 minutes later, a man was seated next to us, and he went on to order a sirloin steak, which there were apparently none of, and his meal came out at the same time as ours after we had waited for around an hour. When it came to the bill, we put cash down and watched as various members of staff walked past us, clearly seeing the money on the table, but no one came to get the money for over 10 minutes, whereas the man next to us asked for his bill, and the waiter sorted payment immediately. Once our money was taken, we sat for around 5 minutes waiting for our change. Overall I feel it was very disappointing service.
Me and my partner enjoyed are meal at coal, but found waiting staff too quick to come over to take items away on several occasions, other than that we will definitely be coming back to coal for food and drinks in the near future.
The food was all great. We had chicken strips and nachos to start which were delicious and then our main courses were even better! our party had chimichangas, burgers, fajitas and steak skewers and they were all great. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It was quite quiet so the atmosphere was abit subdued but it was quite early in the evening. We couldn't fault the service - all our waiters were excellent.
I’ve dined at Coals many times and every time, the people I’m with and myself enjoy ourselves. The food is wonderful and the service friendly but professional.
Waitress was very attentive and therefore the experience was enjoyable - we commented on the good service, which can be hard to come by in other places at busy lunchtimes. All the food was tasty, and the chef accommodated a garlic allergy with care. Phenomenal value with the tastecard, but even without it would be ok. The music was preset quite loud, but staff were really happy to turn it down a notch when asked so we could chat more easily :-) Great lunch!
Service was prompt and friendly, and a pleasant environment (sitting upstairs). Food a little overpriced for what you receive, but nice enough.
Lovely atmosphere with family and friends. I felt the food was generally overpriced though.
Friendly and attentive staff despite being very busy, we had a good time. Will be visiting again.
Food was not great, had to wait 20 mins then prompted staff for the bill collection. Could understand if it was busy but is wasn't with only 3 table occupied. All in all a poor experience
Delicious meal, friendly staff
