Fired up and delivering smoky hot flavours, Coalfire is a uniquely Queenstown dining experience which is proving to be an exciting and popular addition to the resort town’s dining scene.
Coalfire, which opened July 2017, has a meat orientated menu using the finest produce off the hills and farms of Otago and Southland, cooked low and slow over hot coals to craft food with a distinctive smoky edge.
Nestled upstairs and downstairs in the historic Eureka House it is hard to imagine a more apt venue that represents Queenstown. The building has been renovated sympathetically to showcase the heritage fabric of this 150-year-old building. With its old fireplaces, schist walls, locally made metal gantries, raw metal balustrades, rough sawn wood panels and exposed brick, the ambience is warm and cosy.
A hand-built smoker and a Spanish style charcoal oven are used to load the dishes with flavour.
Favourites include meaty St Louis cut pork ribs, Brisket smoked over fire for 14 hours, pork belly with maple glaze, tender melt in your mouth Cardrona lamb shoulder, a Classic beef Wellington cooked to perfection and a hefty selection of steaks seared over flame and accompanied by your sauce of choice. Coalfire is all about meat as meat is meant to be but it is not all doom and gloom for seafood and vegetable lovers. Coalfire backs up its meat offerings with a robust selection of seafood and salads including Tempura soft shell crab, a smoky delicious seafood chowder, cold smoked Stewart Island Salmon, South Coast Sole, Yellow fin Tuna, goats cheese and cumin pastry and a full supporting act of hand cut chips, smoked potato mash, winter greens, mac and cheese and more.
As well as offering food that is loaded with flavour and unashamedly good Coalfire also offers a damn fine selection of craft beers and local wines.
Booth seating, bar leaners and a red leather fire-side couch are inviting options in the warm downstairs bar.
The Best beef Wellington I've ever tried, but sides are just ok. Eventhough highly recommended. Should have more options for dessert.
Food was amazing
Food was great, more than enough options to choose from, inducing deserts! Will definitely be coming back here sometime
So disappointed in Coalfire. You guys say you cook low and slow over coal and wood??? I have eaten low and slow my entire life and this was not low and slow. It tasted like you overcooked it in an oven and maybe even a slow cooker... There was no smoke or smoky edges... The food was so dry, we didn't even finish most of it. The meat was bland and dry. Chips were cold and soggy...Mac and cheese so cold and dried out...So sad... Honestly such a let down. I would not go back and would not recommend this at all. I am long term local here in Queenstown, not a tourist. Come on Coalfire! If you guys just want to rip off tourists thats cool, but locals wont be eating at your place. It was like your cooks couldn't be bothered and just grabbed leftovers from the day before and threw on a plate...
We ordered a sharing platter for three people with different meat, vegetables with different taste. I really liked that the taste was quite different on different course on the platter which was also a very good match to them. Their mulled wine was my favourite one so far compared those I had in different places. Strongly recommended!
We ordered the platter for two and except for the fried chicken, the rest of the meal came out cold. For what we paid this was very disappointing. Even the fries were cold and soggy.
Loved the atmosphere, service was great and the food was delicious. Little bit on the pricey side but when it’s half price you can’t complain!
another fantastic meal here. can't fault it. so much choice, we will be back again
Our group had a great time at Coalfire. Some of the food was a bit hit and miss...with the fried chicken, soft shell crab, garlic bread, and steak all being very tasty worth the price tag, however, there were a few basics that didn't really deliver, like the soggy duck fat potatoes, dry mac'n'cheese and beef brisket. Overall it was very good and definitely worth a visit.
Had a really great time and staff were very friendly
Lovely lunch, very nice restaurant
We went to Coalfire for a birthday celebration. The food was fabulous, the service excellent and the atmosphere perfect for our group. Many thanks for a great evening!
Great night out - food was excellent, as was the service. Will be back!
5 star food! Beautiful restaurant right in the centre of Queenstown. Staff were fab and the food was amazing.
Staff were great, very helpful. Loved the food.
very attentive staff. Delicious meat platter. Couldn’t eat it all between two. Was beautiful.
The meat on the pit platter was delicious but only Luke warm. The staff were great...friendly and efficient
Great service and food was fantastic! I had the Sirloin steak and my girlfriend had the fillet and they were delightful. We chose two sides to go with them and it was the perfect amount. Won’t hesitate to come back at all. A Scottish waitress was extremely helpful with our choices. Already looking forward to returning :)
Thoroughly enjoyed the Beef brisket, the slaw and pickle were lovely but the mac and cheese was a bit underwhelming. Service was very good, from booking to seating to serving. You have great staff.
we had mussel entrée, they were undercooked. The half chicken was average. The sole, mashed pot and rootvegetables were awesome.
My partner and I went there for lunch , it was lovely , the place is looking great , the waitress was lovely , we had the pitmaster platter and it was yum , big portion .
Food was great, service timely, atmosphere good. A little tight seating layout which would be more of an issue when fully booked but no problem for us. Food was lovely slow cooked American style, all of good quality and consistent. Platter was good for two big eaters. Would go back again.
The platter is to die for, everything on it is amazing. Queenstowns hidden gem
