About Church Road Experiences and Tastings
The Cellar Door offers a range of activities for you to discover and experience Church Road, our wines and our 120-year-old history.
A variety of tastings are available giving guests the opportunity to explore our whole portfolio of wines including Cellar Door exclusive products and the prestigious TOM range.
We operate two experiences daily, our morning Versatility of the Grape Experience at 11:00am and the afternoon Legacy and Winery Experience at 2:00pm.
The Versatility of the Grape Experience ($70pp) is your opportunity to discover the passion and innovation of our winemaking team. With glass in hand, sample multiple ways that we are using grapes for more than just the production of wine. From pressed juice to balsamic vinegar and barrel aged spirit, enjoy an informative behind the scenes look at our world of wine and the adaptability of this versatile fruit. Your experience concludes with a guided tasting of our award winning range of wines and runs for approximately 1.5 hours.
In the afternoon we host our Legacy and Winery Experience. Immerse yourself in the past, present and future of Church Road and learn more about our winemaking philosophy. Sample some of our pre-release wines, enjoy the barrel halls, caves and historical underground museum finishing with an in depth wine tasting. This experience runs for approximately 1 hour.
Great wine tasting experience, lots of great info x
From the moment we walked into the winery we felt like we were in for a special treat. After a tasting of the beautiful wines we perused the shop and were treated to further conversations about the winery the history of the building and the production of balsamic vinegar. Lunch on the patio was amazing a gorgeous outlook and a exquisite menu - every mouthful was a treat - and the wine..... The service was second to none - we will be back. Thank you to all the staff for making my dad in laws 80th birthday so special.
Darryl did a fantastic tasting - he's the best!
Fantastic tour with so much more information than expected. Hine was a pleasure
Amazing wine, nice food and fab service! Lively venue both inside and out!
Great to hear the history of the vineyard and see behind closed doors! Staff were friendly and engaging, will visit again 100%
Had really special experience at Church Road winery, first time to know winemaking, and history of Church Road wine. The museum experience are awesome. The tour guide very friendly and patient. Sorry didn't remember her name, but definitely recommend to friends.
Fantastic way to spend an afternoon! It was great to hear the history, the wine is wonderful, and our guide John was warm and knowledgeable. For a group of non-wine drinkers we were swiftly converted! Thanks for creating a memorable experience!
We had a fantastic time and Hine was patient and wonderful!
Well looked after by the wonderful staff. Amazing tour guide who was well versed in the history of this great winery.
Really enjoyed our tasting experience 27/11/2020, staff gave us undivided attention and very good information and background to each wine we tasted and great details about grape varieties, growing conditions in Hawkes Bay and history of the vineyard. The experience wasn't rushed and felt very personal. We were lucky to meet Mr. Buck and talk to him about his Irish connection and the interesting story about the award winning Coleraine wine, We also met Zara Buck who the Viognier is named after, our favourite grape variety. Thank you so much for a memorable visit. The Fidgeon family from Ireland.
Great food, great staff.
Our group of ladies loved their wine tasting experience. Craig presented and spoke fabulously. Five Stars to Church Road we will be back!
Thanks to John for the excellent tour of Church Road. Informative and friendly service and delicious wines to match!
The variety of wines was good, but for the tastings there needs to be a palate cleanser (eg breadsticks) between each wine + rinsing the wine glass so the flavors are not mixed. Also there seems to be a distinction between cheese boards and platters, which confused us (one was available to order and the other wasn't). Also too many rules about what one can order or drink from the cellar and the smaller shop downstairs. The fact that we couldn't drink the wine we bought at the premises outside on the grass while having a cheeseboard seemed a bit weird. But Melissa and Rebecca were super lovely, love their service!
Best winery in Napier.
Great for a team meeting activity (8 ppl) even with 2 non-drinkers
Friendly helpful staff . Great range of quality wines
We had an awesome tour Church Road will ways be our favourite ♥️
HINE was a fabulous guide giving us so much information about wine production, had the answers on all our "stupid" questions, very professional. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Will be definatelly back and recommend to our friends, very enjoyable afternoon
My husband & father in law thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting experience. Very knowledgeable staff. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind feedback, Julia. We are pleased you enjoyed your wine tasting and the service you received. The team at Church Road, Chelsea Abramoff, Cellar Door Supervisor
We both had the $35 tour in the afternoon. I felt the tour guide could have been a bit more informed. It was "ok" but not worth the money. Had we been told a bit more about the process and the history then fine, but it was lacking. The tour guide even stopped and had an unrelated conversation with a colleague. The wine given out at the tastings was barely enough at times to have a meaningful sip. I expected enough for a couple of sips to get the flavour but that wasn't the case all the time. We were in a group of 6 and the others were rolling their eyes at the amounts given. The tour guide was nice and pleasant enough but we did not feel it was value for money. It was unfortunate as the place looked really nice.
Thank you for your feedback. Your honest comments are valuable to us, and we pride ourselves on premium experiences. We will take this information to the team in hopes of better experiences in the future. We hope to have the chance to welcome you back. My husband and I attended the Versatility of the Grape experience, hosted by Kay. We appreciated her knowledge, experience, sense of humor and energy. The wines were terrific, too! Highly recommend.
