About Chilston Park Hotel
The period charm of our traditional Kentish country house, Chilston Park, sets the tone for an authentic and memorable dining experience in the heart of the county. For formal yet relaxed evening dining, Culpeper’s award-winning restaurant near Maidstone offers a menu of seasonal modern British dishes. To accompany your meal, delve into the wine list – our experienced team will be happy to guide you through our selection, including our rare whiskies and brandies.
The elegant Marble Lounge offers an idyllic setting for traditional Afternoon Tea – with plenty of contemporary touches – and in the summer enjoy a light bite out on the terraces where you’ll feel every bit at home.
We saw the guide menu so had an idea about the standards of pastry and cakes in the afternoon tea, and we even saw the savoury version (savoury elevenses). We called to confirm and the hotel suggests that they have both sweet and savoury afternoon teas available However when we arrived, we were told there is no longer a savoury version so the chef put something together but it was nowhere near comparable to what’s listed online, eg no savoury scones. Regarding the traditional afternoon tea, the selection was very poor and nowhere near like the guide menu - only the standards (ie Victoria sponge, brownies, and a couple of other cakes). I have been to a fair share of many afternoon teas from the more affordable to the most expensive ones, this is the worst afternoon tea experience I’ve had by far. Very very disappointed with the experience and won’t be returning, nor will I recommend this to anyone.
My partner and I came for dinner. It is a beautiful area and the grounds were lovely. Mark made us feel extreme welcome and made our experience. I have visited previously and have not been disappointed. The food was lovely, cocktails and overall ambience Would recommend to anyone who wishes to have a beautiful meal away from crowded restaurants.
Given the difficult times with covid, everything was done very well and we felt very safe and it was a very enjoyable afternoon.
Beautiful surroundings, lovely afternoon tea. Couldn’t have picked a nicer place for a catch up with a friend.
A super special experience for my mothers birthday. 5* service and food with a special thank you to Marc Desseaux for his professionalism and attentiveness. Thank you.
Beautiful setting, great fpod and wonderful staff. We really enjoyed our time here
For many years we have enjoyed going to Chilston Park Hotel for their afternoon teas and were very appreciative of how they have adjusted for the Covid 19 social distancing. Although they were working with a skeleton staff we couldn’t fault the service and friendliness we received which enhanced the birthday celebration we were there for. Can’t wait for full service to resume in the near future hopefully.
First of all: service was impeccable. The big disappointement was the "scorched beef carpaccio". I never had such a bad carpaccio in my life. Making a good carpaccio is not great art, and in a 2-rosette restaurant, you expect something different. Well, it certainly was and it was a masterpiece: tasteless meat, a few chunks of goat's cheese, a lot of dry salad in the middle of the plate with some chutney underneath. Presentation: none; it was all trown on the plate from a distance. To try making it better, I asked for olive oil. What I got then was a colorless and totally tasteless oil of unknown origin. Outrageous that one dares to serve this in a 2-rosette restaurant. My wife's starter and the main disher were ok, however never reaching the quality that you would expect here. Luckeley, the staff was great and they did their best to easy te pain. Maybe "corona" has something to do with all this, and I understand that it might be often difficult to serve always the same quality these days. But one should better close than, instead of disappointing customers.
Lovely setting, good service but menu, in particular the main courses, let the restaurant down badly. If one wants battered fish and chips you can go to the local fish & chip shop. The menu should reflect the overall standard the restaurant wants to achieve and should be significantly improved if it is to ever reach its full potential.
The service from marc was outstanding and made is feel so welcome. The venue was amazing, and it was really lovely not to be rushed through the experience. Unfortunately the food, although not bad enough to warrant a complaint at the time was disappointing. The sandwiches tasted very much like margarine, and the flavours of some filling (I.e. mint cream cheese) weren't there. The sandwiches were also a touch dry, but again not bad enough to complain. The scones were a little dry, and there wasn't enough jam and cream for 4 scones. The top tier cakes were nice, but again flavours were a little lacking.
Service was fantastic . Lovely food and choice of tea . Nice garden to sit in afterwards . Didn’t feel at all rushed .
LOvely afternoon tea for my wifes 40th. Thank you
I booked a high tea to celebrate my best friends 60th birthday celebration. We were made to feel valued by the young man greeting us at reception. We were then welcomed by the waitress, who was friendly and delivered impeccable service. The chef came to introduce himself. We enjoyed a lovely tete a tete with this lovely man. The tea was exceptional. The ambience and service warranted a 5 star rating. The location was idyllic. Whilst sitting and admiring the scenery, the manager took time to enquire if we needed anything. He also took time to answer any of our questions with regard to the history of the hotel. Can't wait for an excuse to return. Wish I was getting married soon, as it is the perfect venue for a wedding. A big thanks to all the staff for making my best friends 60th birthday so very special.
Had a lovely afternoon tea with a lovely atmosphere,
Dont ask if the customer has any ‘special requests’ and then don’t fulfil them, birthdays for example.
Its such a shame that there weren't many customers but for us it meant a really tranquil quiet lovely afternoon in a beautiful setting. We couldn't fault anything and hats off to the lady who served us, she was really attentive
Visited for afternoon tea following the recent opening since the Covid Lockdown. Safety was taken into account so felt secure. We had our tea outside as the weather was glorious. Would do again.
This was bought for my wife and myself as a gift for Christmas, we had great afternoon tea in the garden by the lake, service was excellent and food was delicious.
Spent a lovely afternoon , in lovely surroundings. Staff were charming .
Really nice time for our anniversary afternoon tea. The food was lovely and the staff were very friendly and professional - Even despite the social distancing.
We felt very uncomfortable because the staff who were serving our food was not wearing masks
Staff were absolutely superb and couldn’t do enough for us! Lovely location sitting outside for afternoon tea and food was lovely. My only criticism would be that you could have had more savoury items included in the afternoon tea for the money paid ( There were 4 finger sandwiches each) which I think doesn’t reflect the £26 per person price compared to other afternoon teas we have had.
Visited here today and felt safe, from the moment you enter the hotel strict cleaning and social distancing in place. The afternoon tea was superb and the staff made you feel so welcome and looked after us very well. Highly recommend. Special thanks to Marc who is a real credit to your hotel.
We have eaten at Chilston Park on previous occasions prior to Covid 19 lockdown and the service has always made us feel special. This was our first dining experience since lockdown and the whole experience from the temperature checking at the beginning to the one way system in the hotel, made us feel comfortable and safe whilst eating at the restaurant. We would definitely recommend and go back again
Impeccable food and service
