About Carte Blanche
In July co-founder of Le Bun Andy Taylor will open his new restaurant Carte Blanche on Hackney’s Mare Street.
Taylor's new restaurant merges his passion for “dirty American comfort food like burgers, fried chicken and tacos” with everything his loves about French food, including “hollandaise sauce, red wine jus and foie gras”.
Carte Blanche will also offer local beer, natural wines and house cocktails, including a beurre noisette whisky sour which will incorporate butter, one of Taylor's favourite ingredients.
Slow, like warm food, terrible
The service needs improving - we were there on Sat night and the waitress was lovely but clearly run off her feet, we also saw her being told off by the manager which we felt was v unprofessional of him - he seemed a bit overwhelmed by how busy things were. There were timing issues - our food arrived before our drinks for example. The food is incredible. The cocktails were top notch. I think this could be a great spot if they hire a few more waiters/waitresses.
Conrad's service was amazing. The food is sinfully good. I definitely recommend this place and will be back!
Thought the food was good but not great, more of a 3.5 than a 3 but there’s no option for that. It was really interesting and there wasn’t particularly anything wrong with it but at £22 for short rib it should be exceptional. Starters were the star of the show for me, not sure the mains work with the starters and would prefer to see a larger selection of ‘small plates’ instead. Staff were fantastic and atmosphere was great, really relaxing place to wind down and enjoy good food. Would I recommend, yes. Would I come back, probably, but only when the menu changes.
Food exceeded all expectations. Atmosphere and staff were amazing. Highly recommend
All really great! Only problem was that we wanted dessert and no one offered us the dessert menu and by the time we asked for it, we were told the kitchen had closed. Congrats on the new opening, I'm sure the minor quirks in service will get ironed out in no time! Skate wing, Nashville oysters, bone marrow burger all superb.
All in all a pleasant experience - a restaurant still clearly finding it's feet - but it hasn't been open long. The food on the whole was decent, let down by poor flavours in the ox tail mac and cheese (no cheese taste?) and synthetic flavouring on the wings - but the cod cheeks were to die for, and the steak tartare was immense. The wine list was expensive, but superb options. The services was slightly chaotic but endearing, I want this place to get even better, which I'm sure it will do! I will be back with my fingers crossed
Enjoyed the food but not the wine, which was so bad it rather marred the meal. The restaurant was kind enough to let us try four different wines in search of one to have a bottle of. We picked the least bad one, but really didn't enjoy it. The wine list consists only of 'natural' wines; there are some good natural wines, but not on this wine list. And there are many, many more excellent normal wines that would be far more pleasurable for the same price. I feel that Carte Blanche is ruining its drinks menu for the sake of making a misguided point.
Wonderful wonderful food, enjoyed a really lovely evening.
Amazing! Best burger and chicken burger hands down!
I was super excited to try this new restaurant in my neighbourhood. I had dinner on a Sat, the restaurant wasn't very busy but they had only just opened. The waitress was really helpful in helping us select wine to compliment our dishes. We ordered the chicken wings to start, the Steak Frites and Skate wing for main. There was some confusing with our order and the Starter and Steak arrived at the same time. They managed to keep the steak warm until we had finished the wings and brought it back out when the Skate Wing was ready. The chicken wings did not disappoint, they had right spice and a delicious blue cheese dip. The steak and the skate wing was also amazing, I would recommend both. There were some smalls issues, I had a fly in my wine (but the waitress quickly changed it), the mix up of bringing one main with the starter and also the loo was not working but I put these down to teething issues of a new business. It would have been nice to hear more about the restaurant, concept etc... Especially as it wasn't very busy and learn more about them. I would definitely go back.
good food, cocktails need improvement
I'm aware you were a person short on the day (Saturday 14th). As a result, service was slow. One of the knives we got hadn't been washed properly. Also, I found the steak slightly overcooked and tough as a result. However, you have a lot of potential and I think you'll do really well. I'd visit again. The burgers looked good. The fried chicken was delicious. On reflection, I should have given you another week before visiting. I've posted on Instagram about you. @bornhungrylondon
Most of the food were heavy, fried and tastes the same and flavourless. Small plate section of the menu was nicer than the main. Mains not really value for money.
