Caractère is a chic, contemporary and independent restaurant situated in Notting Hill and opened by husband and wife team Diego Ferrari and Emily Roux.
In French, Caractère literally means character or personality, something that both Emily and Diego love to express through their cooking and hospitality. The menu represents different personality traits so you can choose to be ‘Curious’ and ‘Greedy’ a la carte, or ‘Be Adventurous’ with the full tasting menu.
Best meal of the year full stop.
We had the six course tasting menu - The food was eclectic but well balanced and absolutely delicious. The service was charming and refreshingly unpretentious. We will definitely return.
Left feedback on Tripadvisor. Hope you like it.
Great new restaurant in Notting Hill. Interesting menu, and lovely presentation. Staff were very friendly although a bit slow to attend.
Very good food a little pricy, really nice ambiance Very good choice of wines. Will definitely go back.
A jewel of a restaurant, food that is extraordinary, lovely wine list, tables spaced apart nicely, smiling staff and a lovely ambience. What more can anyone ask for?
Caractère is truly the most perfect restaurant in London right now.
Another splendid lunch. Amazing value for money. Delicious food and friendly service. Superb Italian wine!
We had a superb dinner and really liked the atmosphere. Somehow it feels lively but private? The service was friendly and attentive. We all ordered different dishes and shared which worked perfectly.
Very good food and good service. Beautiful presentation as well !We will definitely come back. My table jclose to the main door was the only negative point as I was getting cold each time the door was opened.
I'd like to preface my feedback by saying that the restaurant is fantastic. My feedback are based my past experiences and some nitpicking which should not be a deterrent to other customers. 1 - I had a party of three and so we were able to ordered everything on the menu. For the most part, we were able to single out the best fishes for our palettes with close seconds. All three dishes from every group were good, but some were exceptional. As this restaurant is seasonal, the menu I've experienced may change for you. Curious - The closest category of all. Oyster tart is a bold start to your course, and definitely the way to go if you're feeling hungry. The beat dish was the freshest having the most raw components. Subtle - we prefered the roast asperagus, then the celeriac followed by the saffron risotto. If you're looking for the most filling, pick the risotto, but for pure flavor we all agreed in the asparagus. Delicate - take your pick between the crispy halibut or generous portion of Cornish cod. The monkfish portion was a tad small, and although the beans were good it left me wanting more. If you're hungry, take the cod. If you want to play it safe, take the fantastically prepared halibut. Robust - Duck. Take the duck. It's a simple dish which was well prepared. If you're looking for something innovative, I don't think this dish is it. It is a simple dish which presents classic quality ingredients and flavors. If you've had duck before, this won't be new, but it's tastiest of what we tried. The ravioli was satisfactory. Due to the nature or the dish, there was relatively little meat served. Veal is a delicate tasting meat and its flavor is easily lost in small quantities such as a stuffing in the ravioli. If you're looking for a lighter dinner or lunch take the raviolis, otherwise we recommend the duck. We did not try the lamb. Strong - gorgonzola dolce. Unfortunately there were no other options. The seed crisp served was okay. The cheese was good, but one of my party members is slightly lactose intolerant. We come from a background where we don't waste food, and so my friend still ate the cheese. Other options would be nice. We don't blame the restaurant because we could have said something and I'm sure they would have accommodated us. I just think that listed alternative menus can circumvent the need to ask for accomodation. The salad was rather plain. Our party agreed that this was the weakest part of the entire meal and perhaps the menu. I think there are other more interesting dishes available to customers. Greedy - all three deserts were absolutely awesome. Our group was split 2:1 in favor of the mango-coconut savarin and banana tart. The drinker amongst us like he rum taste in the banana tart, however the light fruity savarin had an airy "minty" taste throughout. Maybe it was lime zest, or some other herb I can't identify, but that "je ne sais quoi" put it over the top for us. The molten chocolate cake was good. I think it's hard to go wrong with chocolate cake, it's a very safe and indulgent dish. 2 - Value is good. Everyone experiences value differently. For 78 pounds, I find the course value to be a strong middle ground. If you loved every dish, you might say that's it great value, if you happened to pick your potentially least prefered dishes then it may not be worth it for you. I prefer more acidic flavors, and lighter dishes where my other party mates enjoyed more voluminous dishes. If you come alone, or without the prior knowledge of the dishes, you wallet may hurt when picking a lighter dinner. 3 - service. I prefer the waitstaff in aprons over the men in suits. They seem less intimidating. The three men were well dressed, not entirely sure if they were sommeliers, or maitre'd.... Service was smooth and quiet. No one was intrusive, and jokes were had. Emily came out to ask if everything was fine. I think that's it's a nice touch that the owner came to ask our opinion although it can be intimidating to nitpick at her restaurant in front of her. I'd like to reinforce the fact that the food was fantastic and will be going back when I get the chance. My review is to help customers pick the dish which may improve their experience. My recommendation to getting the best experience is to ask the waitstaff about the dishes. Honestly, if you're cheap just ask them bluntly what's going to get you the most food. If you're not very hungry, ask them which dishes are lightest. Ask them what is their preferred dish on the menu. There are no bad questions if it means you get to eat your preferred meal, and the restaurant knows it's finest it's best to accomodate its guests.
Wonderful meal and great atmosphere.
A lovely relaxed and delicious lunch. The food was superb and the service was attentive but unobtrusive. I loved this restaurant- everything is just right.
Amazing family dinner! Thanks again to all the team! The service was absolutely perfect and professional and a 10/10 for the food. Nothing to add more than Perfection...
Amazing food, friendly and professional service
Absolutely gorgeous food with a refreshingly informal atmosphere and approach.
Great lunch, food , service and ,although we had not advised them , the dessert came with a chocolate Happy Anniversary on the plate - which must have been picked up when we were having our aperitif - that sort of attention to detail separates the good from the best !
Interesting and varied menu with man-sized portions which ably satisfied my appetite and that of my large friends. We were impressed with the calm and relaxed atmosphere which allowed us to focus on our selection of food and wine and to converse quietly. We tested the wine list vigorously and were satisfied with our selections ably assisted by the sommelier who guided us through the unfamiliar Italian listings. Service overall was unobtrusive and excellent. The price compared favourably with similar quality establishments.
Fantastic; best in London now.
Wow! Just wow! We were a normal working class family sharing a birthday and was treated like royalty. The food was out of this world and the wine has something for everyone. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. The tables and chairs are comfortable too. I’m disabled and had not a single issue. Thank you again for an amazing evening. I’m really looking forward to coming back and trying something different.
Delicious meal, charming service. Not cheap and a slightly off pitch location but a great addition to casual high quality restaurants in Notting Hill.
Seriously good restsurant, recommened service and fine wine We will be back ...
