About Captain's Galley Seafood Restaurant
Jim & Mary’s Philosophy
Simplicity, Integrity, Traceability, Seasonality and Sustainability are the five pillars upon which Jim and Mary Cowie sympathetically renovated the ‘Scrabster Ice House & Salmon Bothy’ creating - Captain’s Galley - one of the world's leading seafood restaurants.
So glad that we discovered this gem of a restaurant
Returning after 8years with 5 friends .....lived up to ALL our expectations in EVERY sense ........food , wine and truly and special service .......Mary , Jim , and the whole team were just so welcoming throughout the evening with our party and all other guests.
Like an oyster the exterior belies the pearl inside, wonderful food, friendly service, great atmosphere.
Exceptional, both in terms of food and service. Mary was absolutely delightful!
A unique experience - Jim and Mary's warm hospitality and remarkable cooking was the highlight of our trip to the Highlands. Truly, the Captain's Galley is a shining example of commitment to the values on which it was built.
A very special place where you're treated like a private guest by the owners and staff. The food was everything and more than we expected; an absolute treat for those who love the freshest of seafood cooked to perfection! Highly recommended.
Outstanding meal as always in a fabulous setting and relaxed atmosphere.
An outstanding meal in a lovely atmosphere!
If anyone knows of a better seafood restaurant with similar ambience and surroundings, then I need to know about it urgently. Jim and Mary are amongst the most welcoming hosts you will find in the UK, and what they bring to the table (literally) is well worth the journey to Scrabster. Everything on the menu revolves around fresh, local, sustainability, and quality, and in writing this, I am now even more determined to get back there. This is one of those quality secrets that needs to be shared with anybody visiting the north-east of Scotland, and for serious foodies, it is worth the effort to get there. Trust me, it is worth it.
You may have to make a booking by phone if like me you struggle with the online system. However you get your booking the meal is well worth the effort.
Outstanding Took us 10 years to come back but won’t be as long next time. The market fish dish was a stand-out highlight. Love the fact that the staff all come & chat with the customers. We recommend you to everyone. Thank you to the whole team x
Wonderful restaurant, so glad to have found it. Would highly recommend.
From the moment you walk in the building you know this is going to be a special place; friendly, relaxed and such pride in local produce. The food is imaginative, cooked superbly and presented impeccably. Mary is a great host and a real character and once you are in (book in advance) the table is yours for the night. We were there nearly 4 hours (sorry for keeping you Paula!) but time flies by and there is no rush. Special mention for the mackerel and the Smorgas was superb I am told. We couldn't fault anything. Thank you so much for a great evening.
Wonderfully enjoyable experience is all aspects. Had a great time.
We had a wonderful evening - superb hospitality and great atmosphere created by Mary and Jim Food was amazing and generous portions. a really superb end to our north coast trip!
Superb - fresh seafood, friendly, personal service - like having dinner at a friend’s house! Our third time there and will absolutely return when we’re up there again
Lovely warm welcome. Very relaxed atmosphere created by Mary and Jim. Jim is passionate about fish and took the time to explain the market which was very interesting. The queenies were excellent as was the hake and the market special. After 5 days on our north coast trip this was by far the best fish we had tasted. Don’t miss it and book early as they are only open 4 days a week. Sandra and Cheryl
Always an enjoyable experience. Jim and Mary are very attentive and make us very welcome. The food is excellent but don’t go looking for chips or plates piled high!
We had a fabulous evening. Couldn’t have been better.
Not just a meal but a whole experience. Fantastic hosts, both Jim and Mary meet and regularly chat to diners through the evening. Food is simply without equal. Dishes to die for.
A perfect evening with absolutely wonderful food!
Wonderful dinner at Captains Galley. Last night of a long-planned trip to Scotland and the perfect way to cap it off. Food and service both superb. Highly recommended!
A warm welcome from both our hosts, then the freshest food, cooked with imagination (and no pretensions). Thank you Jim and Mary!
Superb food, excellent service and an unforgettable evening.
