About Captain's Galley Seafood Restaurant
Jim & Mary’s Philosophy
Simplicity, Integrity, Traceability, Seasonality and Sustainability are the five pillars upon which Jim and Mary Cowie sympathetically renovated the ‘Scrabster Ice House & Salmon Bothy’ creating - Captain’s Galley - one of the world's leading seafood restaurants.
Just the best. Our first visit but won’t be the last. Food divine and the setting is perfect. Couldn’t ask for better hosts and the current measures for Covid were executed impeccably without compromising the experience. Staff were ace and just couldn’t rate it higher.
We ate in the Scabster Seafood Bar after travelling on the ferry from Stromness. We had the place to ourselves. The food was excellent. The service was good, although it seemed the staff were still getting used to the revised policies post lockdown. All in all, a lovely meal and very convenient location.
The food was exceptional: we enjoyed mussels, partan bree, hake on paella and scallop scampi, with a great rhubarb crumble to finish. The organisation was less good. We had booked a table (rather than the high seat in window) because my wife has mobility problems but all tables were occupied. This created a difficult situation which was only resolved when a young couple offered to occupy the window stools. The staff had clearly not honoured the booking system.
The food was lovely, a real treat for our family. the service was probably the worst we've experienced in a long time. I feel horrendous saying it and it wasn't one thing in particular, it was as though we and even the restaurant were an inconvenience. It was a very strange experience.
Absolutely lovely meal with family out for the first time in ages. Always a pleasure to be welcomed here.
The best fish and chips I've eaten in a long time. Four of us ate and we all agreed, fish and scampi and chips were perfectly cooked in great coatings.
Great food and great service. I can highly recommend 👌
Excellent food & friendly & accommodating staff.
Initially disappointed we weren’t in the main restaurant as had been before and was looking forward to the same experience. However the meal we had in the Seaview bar was stunning and delicious. The chef was very attentive and clearly passionate about the food and drink served, the meal we had was faultless We will be back next time we are in the area.
My niece and I had a fabulous dinner here. The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant and it was a lovely experience. Mary was away but the lady who greeted us also turned out to be our landlady in Thurso! We were delighted to meet Jim after dinner and he kindly gave me some tips on improving my homemade kimchi, which I described as 'rough' and he called 'rustic'! His own delicate kimchi was in a lobster bisque which was a delicious start to the meal. Booking advised. I wish I was local!
Really great meal. Suits people who also drink with their meal since the waiting was a bit long so when your sober the clock goes slow. Really enjoyed the meal and the personal touch from the chef chatting to us ans she made sure we where catered for properly.
Inspired cooking and a lovely atmosphere. One of my favourite restaurants.
Superb evening and a real event for us. Owners were great hosts and gave us personal attention visiting our table between courses. Jim the chef and joint owner was really knowledgeable about the fish on the menu and Mary was absolutely charming making us feel welcome. Food quality was good and the way they have their customers arranged made it all the better.
A simply wonderful evening. Great venue, lovely host and fabulous food and service. Everything about the evening was just perfect.
Pity that our email mentioning special dietary requirements was mislaid as last minute changes to our menu had to be made Thanks to chief and staff for providing alternatives.
Jim & Mary are such wonderful host. Everything from the service to the food was excellent. Nothing was any trouble to accommodate our needs. Would highly recommend anyone visiting Scrabster to book into this very special restaurant with such a wonderful choice of sustainable food all locally sourced.
We had a fantastic meal and so enjoyed spending the evening at the Captain’s Galley. Jim and Mary were fabulous hosts and together with their staff they provided excellent food and service.
Easily the best meal we had in 10 days touring Scotland and friendly service delivered perfectly and with a smile.
Always an amazing dining experience 🐟
