My wife and I had a lovely evening at the Captains Galley at the weekend. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive. I am sure we will be returning :)
Fantastic evening, we were really well looked after. Really really good food, and lovely to have such good quality without feeling that we weren't posh enough! Perfect level of making us feel totally at home and welcome, and chatting with us. I meant to ask about the Syrian refugees side of things and forgot, but that was another reason why I'd come here. Thanks a million!

You just can't beat fresh fish! Food, atmosphere and service were all fab. Mary is a fantastic host. A memorable night out. I may have been harsh with 4 stars for value, this was a superb night out, but would be for special occasions only - unless I win the lottery!

In three words "Absolutely fabulous evening".
We dined at the Captains Galley for our wedding anniversary. The unassuming and rustic outside appearance of the restaurant belied just what a real gem it is. Mary on front of house was most attentive as were the serving staff. We loved the simple but elegant dining room where the tables were nicely spaced so that you could enjoy private conversation. We also loved the amuse Bouche of seafood bisque and crab which really did whet the appetite and was utterly delicious. Such a nice touch. The food that followed was just sublime, the roll mop herring on Gareths smorgasbord took me right back to childhood and my crab starter was sweet and delicate with a beautiful sweet dressing. The Kyle of tongue oysters were amazing, just one problem, I could have eaten a dozen! Gareth said his langoustine was the best he'd ever tasted and I agreed, I was picking at his shells to ensure no a morsel was left. Then we both opted for roast hake on a bed of soupy chicken and seafood paella and it was absolutely incredible, we have never had hake like it, moist, silken flakes of fish just on the edge of translucent, just as it should be and the accompanying paella was perfect. We teamed our meal with a bottle of the Spanish Chardonnay that Mary recommended and it was a great choice, light, zesty and not at all heavy in oak that many Chardonnays have been known to be. We didn't have room for dessert but we saw delicious looking plates being served to the table in front of us. At the end of the meal Mary discreetly (which we appreciated) brought us 3 lovely homemade chocolates with a little lit candle to recognise our special day. I can honestly say it will be one anniversary we will never forget, the Captains Galley not only exceeded all expectation, it smashed it out of the park and thoroughly deserves its accolade as one of the world's leading seafood restaurants. We like to think we know what we are talking about, having lived in Australia and dined out in some extremely fine seafood restaurants in the Southern Hemisphere, the Captains Galley held its own amongst them and some. Amazing achievement by Mary, John and all the team. Thank you so much.
We loved our dining experience, from the minute we walked in we knew we were in for something special. It was nice to just sit in the drinks salon and have the time to discuss the menu and have a drink without feeling rushed or that we were disturbing dinners. We all could not stop talking about the amuse bouche it did its job well we really were excited about what was coming next. The choices on the menu was good. We had the smorgas which had a good selection of seafood so I felt confident enough to try herring. My in laws had crab and the fish cakes and they loved it. I think everyone at the table was a little jealous of my market fish plate. While the selection of fish was superb I was pleasantly surprised at the level of care taken with the supporting case of veg underneath. Everything was cooked just right leaving the right bit of crunch so you knew it was veg not an over steamed mess. I could have eaten them again. The remise en bouche was refreshing and left us ready for dessert. My mum in law thought her lemon drizzle was to beautiful to eat and dad in law kept commenting on how nice it was to have pouring cream with his crumble. We had the cheese plate and it was the perfect end to the meal. Mary has a great sense of humour and it was clear everyone has a passion for food prepared and served the right way ensuring you taste the natural clear flavour of the seafood. Perfect. From the moment we entered until we blissfully left everything about Captain's Galley was spot on. We were warmly greeted by Mary and her staff and shown to a comfy chair in the front parlor given the menu to peruse while we sipped our aperitif. After our selections they showed us to our table in the elegant dinning room. The courses were expertly prepared and brought out in with perfect timing. Mary checked in frequently while still giving each new diner the same personalized attention. The freshness of the seafood was only enhanced with the preparation never over sauced or covered up and all the flavors of the sea delighted us. Could not recommend more highly and hope to return to Scotland and this fantastic restaurant before long. Cheers to Mary & Jim for creating such a fine dining experience
Warm welcome, cosy atmosphere, great food (pricey but worth every penny), we will repeat the experience if we ever visit Thurso again. Mary is a charming hostess indeed!

This was one of the most exceptional meals you can have in your life. Mary and Jim were the best hosts you can ask for. Down to earth and beautiful people. Do not pass this up. Take the time to eat there. You will understand.

A wonderful recommendation before crossing to Stromness. Tremendous welcome and delicious fresh food. Service very efficient and generally lovely atmosphere - busy but not noisy or crowded.

Had a wonderful meal here last Friday. Food was delicious and the staff were so friendly and attentive. The restaurant is small and intimate. Will definitely visit again when we are next in the area.
