Modern Portuguese dining in a relaxed, casual neighbourhood setting.
A new restaurant in Ancoats from Simon Shaw and the team behind El Gato Negro Tapas
It was really loud, I barely could hear the other person in front of me. Service was very good, the staff was very nice and helpful. The octopus was very good.
Would have given it 3.5 but not an option. Great atmosphere and service...very friendly and attentive. Food good... but not yet quite up there with El Gato Negro. Cod was delicious as were chicken wings, steak on sweet bread was very good too. Prawns though we're very disappointing (flavour ok but soggy!) and the Aubergine had a really tough skin so needs to be rethought as a dish. Pastel dear nata were tasty as a desert (little overdone on the case) and the salted caramel Ice cream was delicious. If all dishes had been at the same high standard as the fish / chicken it would have easily been a 4...but not yet. Would definitely recommend and will give it another go.
It was all so lovely! The food was amazing and beautifully presented. I think it would be nice to have something to offset how rich the dishes were...however, overall we loved it and would definitely be back again!
Unfortunately a low service score - initial order taken promptly however we wanted to order some more dishes and ended up having to go up to the bar to get someone to come and take the order and the restaurant was not full .......
Olivia was an amazing waitress and the atmosphere was awesome, will be back
Nicely Done guys...generally delicious & tasty authentic cooked food.
The food was fine - but didn't really knock my socks off, and I felt it was a bit overpriced. Service was efficient and friendly
Great experience all round.
We initially tried to book in El Gato Negro which apparently is the sister restaurant to Canto. They were booked up and consequently recommended Canto. So glad they did. We had a lovely dining experience. We were a party of 10 consisting of Mum Dad our own two children and their friends (all students). We all had a fab time and went on to Albert Square to enjoy the light switch on. Well done Canto. We will all be recommending you.
Lovely experience! Thank you the team at Canto xxx

Fantastic food yet again - just gets better. Tried the special Pork Chop which was delicious. 4th visit and cant fault it !
Food was disappointing, lacked any real flavour or inventiveness. There wasn't anything to complain about, but it definitely wasn't impressive or worth returning for. Service was good though.
Really nice evening and food was great
Friendly service but real lack of knowledge and expertise of menu, wines, even prounciation of food. Also a bit clumsy with dropping cutlery etc throughout. Had to ask for water etc to be refilled, not proactive. Aubergine was very disappointing (just a roasted piece!)- except for the seaweed addition it was flavourless and frankly very poor. Can’t believe I’m saying this but WAY too much garlic on the clams. Everything else was v tasty.
Table of 6 and the chef agreed we could have the group menu which is usually 7+. Request to make this available regardless of numbers-it was excellent value and choices were perfect. We will be back!
We really enjoyed the ambience and quality of food at Canto. However, my partner and I were truly disappointed with the level of service. We waited for a long time for our food order to be taken although it was a very quiet at the restaurant. We asked for the dessert menu and waited for quite a long time before the waitress came to take our dessert order. Again, we waited for a long time for the bill too arrive after asking for it. It is a pity really as I would have definitely returned if not for the poor service.
The skate wing special was outstanding as were some of the other small plates. Will be back
Lovely food but small portions. On the whole was really impressed.
Really lovely staff, friendly atmosphere and delicious food!
Dissappointing, I was expecting the same service and food standard as El Gato Negro. Food was hit and miss; some dishes were good but others were poorly cooked (undercooked aubergine, burnt pastel de nata), very salty or just not very well thought out (tempura in a tomato sauce = soggy). Reasonably priced but dishes are on the small side. Took a little while to get served, water for the table requested never turned up and then all dishes came out in very quick succession, meaning we were finished in just under an hour.
The food was superb with some outstanding dishes, I will be back to try the rest of the menu
Anna was amazing. All the staff were super friendly. Great food. Loved the chefs table.
Really wonderful food. For a table of four we had 10 dishes and then a couple of desserts and that was plenty. Specials were especially good. And service was attentive but not pushy, just how it should be. Can't wait to return
