About Cannonball Restaurant & Bar
Cannonball House is one of the city’s oldest and most important buildings with stunning views to Edinburgh Castle. Our cosy bar lists over 120 Scotch whiskies and is open for lunch, cocktails and pre dinner drinks. From the bar we will escort you up the atmospheric old school staircase to our award winning Scottish Restaurant, serving delicious, seasonal quality dishes in a truly unique location.
Fresh East Coast lobster, oysters, Bellhaven Smoked salmon, seasonal Scottish game and the best Scotch Beef from Inverurie are always on the menu. And, of course our haggis cannonballs are not to be missed!
Serving old fashioned fish and chips all day.
A very enjoyable evening with friendly attentive staff and a delicious menu. The view of the Castle was an added bonus. Will definitely be back
Lively restaurant. Good good and friendly service
One of our favourite Edinburgh restaurants, Cannonball always delivers delicious food, great service and a memorable eating experience.
I had been really looking forward to this meal and while I found the restaurant to be beautiful, the food was disappointing. My starter of mussels didn't come with bread as stated and what was described as a creamy white wine sauce was a tiny bit of watery liquid. My mum had the soup which had virtually no seasoning. All in all a disappointing experience.
Very very beautiful Restaurant with an excellent service!!!
The evening was perfect.
When trying to book at Contini Cannonball, the online reservation deferred automatically to another one of your locations. I had to call to change the reservation location, and your staff was very accommodating. (Luckily I had noticed it booked at the wrong location.). They were able to change the reservation at the last minute. I would suggest you look into your online reservation system. Otherwise, our experience was excellent, including not only the food, but the service and atmosphere. I would recommend highly to others visiting or locals looking for a unique place to dine. The view of the castle, while not at our table, is a very special touch for a special date night for two. Ceratainly something to promote on your site that I did not read. (I did not see if it could be seen downstairs from the bar/lounge area as our table was ready early and we did not spend time in that area of the restaurant.)
Delicious food, charming service and a unique view of Edinburgh Castle; altogether a perfect evening.
We visited during the storm this week, received a very warm welcome, enjoyed a beautiful lunch watching the castle's flagpoles swaying in the gales! Will be back, we'd regularly visit your other two restaurants, this was our first visit to Cannonball, it was very quiet understandably because of the weather.
Had a wonderful dinner with great service and interesting menu.
We celebrated a 50th birthday and were treated royally. The waiters were friendly, attentive and met our every need. The food was delicious, the lobster Mac and cheese was the best we ever tasted, lots of tender lobster. The celebration drinks and desert completed our evening. We highly recommend Cannonball.
We enjoyed what we had to eat at Cannonball Restaurant but the service was poor. We entered through the bar and were left standing, with no one paying us any attention, for almost 10 minutes, alongside others apparently waiting to attend a Fringe show. Once we were taken upstairs we waited a while before ordering drinks, the waiter spilled my cocktail, which was replaced (altho' I didn't want a 2nd one!) This was then replaced by a complimentary glass of my choice. We ordered food only to be told the mussels were off the menu so I had to order a replacement starter. Once it came, the food was very good and we both enjoyed it, but the service was chaotic and communication between kitchen and serving staff, and bar staff and the restaurant, seems lacking.
I visited the Cannonball for an early dinner, as part of a party of 6, following a pleasant Sunday afternoon at the festival. We arrived at 5.30pm, as planned, but the restaurant was not ready for us because the hostess was only just arriving for her shift. After a short delay we were seated, and given menus by the sole waiter on duty. The restaurant was not busy but we waited a wee while to order and then be served drinks, then order food. There then followed an unacceptably long gap before starters were served at around 6.30. The starters were of variable quality. My pigeon was tepid, another over cooked and dry. The soup was tasty but tepid. The mussels were well cooked and enjoyable but served with no side plate for empty shells. Some had hoped to order the signature Cannonball starter, but they had already sold out. Mains were served at after 7, and again variable. The gnocchi was chewy and not pleasant. Two “medium” steak sandwiches were anything but: one close to well done (which suited the individual); one raw in places and cold. The latter was returned (but only after the waiter, unprofessionally attempted to suggest it was properly cooked and my fellow diner did not know what a medium steak should look like!). There was a long gap before the steak was returned, and the rest of the table had almost finished. My fish and chips was average. The venison was however well received and enjoyable. Given the poor service and variable quality, at 8pm we decided against desserts, asked for the bill and left. We won’t be back. 2.5 hours for two courses is very slow. The whole experience was very disappointing, particularly given our experiences in other Contini restaurants.
We were here for lunch. Best salmon we ever had. The cannonballs were excellent as well. Service was a little slow but they offered us a free drink. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
The lobster was over cooked, more a 'mash' lobster. Staff not really seeing work : our aperitif glasses were on the table all dinner, even when we placed them on top of the table. Long waiting time before staff comes to the table ; we ordered another bottle of water, never came. Spray for cleaning tables was on the counter, not really a nice view for such a restaurant. Restaurant came recommended, but we will not return when in Edinburgh. Saw another couple back at the airport who dined there, had the same experience.
Fantastic service, great view and lovely food. We were well looked after, unhurried and the staff honoured our pre-theatre menu booking despite some mix up on their end which was fantastic.
Personal muy atento. Se nota que los dueños se ocupan del negocio. Congrats!!!!
Excellent menu and the food was delicious. The restaurant is in a lovely building with a great bar to enjoy a drink before dinner. Service was excellent - they were busy as there was a concert on, but our waitress was very helpful and efficient. The only downside was the toilets - in between courses, I went to use the toilet but the queue was so long, it was actually out the door! I assume either the bar was exceptionally busy or people from the concert that was on at the castle that night were using them! It would help to have facilities for diners only to avoid being delayed queuing for the toilet, especially when they have food waiting.
I visited Cannonball very often in the past, for it's athmosphere. Right now I can't really say anything positive about the whole place. Thankfully, the decoration is the same, at least we can have a look of the walls and discuss some pictures. The Lady who took us upstairs, didn't really say anything about the Contini family at all, what is quite disappointing, as my friends love history. We took a seat, and asked the waiter's help to choose the wine. It's was quite ok. We decided to order only one plate of Cannonball starter,as we were not sure that what is this. When we had the order , I repeated to the waiter with an explaination why we don't want to have four plates of starter. When he served it, we found out that he didn't understand what we told to him, so with an embarassed smile, and saying nothing, we had our starters. During our dinner, more embarrasing moments happened: it was clear that the whole kitchen staff was talking about our table, it was very easy to figure it out. What a scary and creepy thing. The meals were alright, but for a Contini restaurant it was under the quality. We finished and paid the whole bill, what was a bit more (nearly 50 pound more) what we ordered for real. This experience is going to keep me away from this restaurant for a few years. I trusted in the quality, but unfortunately we didn't get what we were paying for. I'm very unsatisfied.
Doesnt worth the price
We had the perfect evening at Cannonball! It was my partner’s birthday and the staff made sure to add some special touches, including dessert and a 18-year old Scotch, on the house. The food was magnificent, the service was attentive but also relaxed and they even brought an extra scoop of ice cream for our friend’s toddler who was with us! Highly highly recommend Cannonball!
Went for early dinner before attending concert at the castle. Service and atmosphere were lovely. very good drinks range and value for money. Beautiful red wine to go with our dinner. Sadly the food was not very good - the haggis balls (a key dish for the restaurant) were dry and cold, Beetroot starter was the same. Informed them but nothing was changed. Disappointed as had brought visitors for dinner - expecting lovely Scottish food. Hopefully not a regular occurrence for tourists!
I attended on Saturday with my bridal party. The food and service were fantastic, however upon leaving a member of the bridal party told me they had phoned earlier in the week to ask if something special could be arranged as it was my hen party. They were told that petit fours would be waiting and congratulations written on the plate. This never happened and the party were upset as it was supposed to be a surprise and they were looking forward to seeing my reaction. In future, it might be best not to promise these things unless they can be delivered.
I had a great evening! Would recommend this to anyone, especially the great value pre theatre menu. Located right in the heart of Edinburgh on the royal mile - you can’t beat it! Food was well thought out, delicious and well presented! Delightful staff, couldn’t do enough for you! Perfect for a graduation dinner, date night, family meal ... or whatever else you fancy!
Great setting and a real effort by the staff to attend to our every need. Hadn’t realised the tasting menu or a la carte wasn’t available for lunch, but our meals were nice all the same. Thanks
